  1. You need to cynicism that up a bit... on Microsoft 'Refocusing on Fun', Alien Hominid Comes to XBLA · · Score: 1

Solid, well designed, gameplay is better than "rich graphics" and a "M for Mature" rating?

That's not what they said! They're focusing on "fun". When game designers try to make "fun" we get games like Fusion Frenzy, Mario Party, Eyetoy and Buzz - stuff you'll probably enjoy if you're drunk at a party* but not exactly games for people who appreciate and enjoy quality gameplay.

*which is fine, but I'd much rather be at a spin-the-bottle party than a Mario Party party...

Because that knowledge is true on Earth too. The best examples are that helium was discovered through astronomical observations of the Sun, not by observing things on Earth. Gravity was understood partly by astronomical observations, too.

In the case of extrasolar planets a major draw is getting more insight into how the solar system formed. Perhaps that isn't interesting to you, as it's not practical knowledge, but I think the public in general do care about how we came to be.
And, of course, the search for potential extraterrestrial life to communicate with (or perhaps even attempt to defend against) is relevant to us whether or not we ever leave the atmosphere.
Finally, I think that many ISS detractors do expect that eventually humans will go to other planets when the technology is actually there to make it reasonably easy. It'll help those efforts, when they happen, to have good information about what's out there.

Oh, for the love of Miyamoto aren't we over this yet? I've have a gamepad of some sort plugged into my PC for over a decade. Remember serial ports? You could get gamepads for them. Right now I have a a gamecube controller plugged into my PC, a force-feedback flightstick and a dancemat to go with that, and I've used a wheel before too. Since USB came along supporting 4 controllers simultaneously hasn't been difficult, and you can play 4-player Smash Bros with controllers on PC with no trouble.

    USB controller.

Xbox 360 wired controller works with PC via USB as standard.

Console to USB adaptors are dirt cheap and easily available.

Wii remote is standard bluetooth, you can use it with a PC.

Yes, they don't come packed it with a standard $399 PC, but anyone who actually cares enough about the issue to think "hey, it'd be neat if I could plug my PS2 controller into my PC" can spend 5 minutes shopping online and get it done.

I've played Smash Bros on a PC. It's called an emulator. Console games do eventually end up on PC, it's just that it takes years and isn't always legal - although some services like Gametap do let you play emulated console games legally. The PC is an open, universal (in the universal Turing machine sense, at least) platform so these kinds of things exist, unlike consoles.

And, of course, the lines between console and PC aren't exactly clear. You can put linux on an xbox or PS3 and run emulated console games on them.

  5. Psychonauts - can we get a better example? on Why Do Games Sell? · · Score: 1

I really don't think Psychonauts was that good, I don't see why people elevate it to Sacred Cow status. The reason I personally didn't buy it was because I played the demo. It's a generic 3D platformer with a collect-a-thon bolted on. A cute art style and nice writing are irrelevant when the game isn't very appealing.
I basically thought that getting it when I still have Shines to collect in Mario Sunshine (which handles better and is more fun to jump around in, despite having zero writing) would be a waste of money.

Incidentaly, I bought Sunshine because I totally loved Mario 64 and wanted more. And why did I buy Mario 64? I didn't, I pirated the ROM (but have since bought it on DS)...

So, how about this hypothetical scenario:

Component X is patented by MS. MS says they will sue anyone who distributes it. This shuts down linux in general (at least until a workaround occurs).

Novell offers distro that will automatically download Component X from MS - this is legal as MS has the right to distribute their own component, and the whole situation is like the nvidia binary drivers. However, unlike the nvidia situation digital signatures and encryption are used such that only an authenticated Novell distro can download Component X.

Novell is now the only (legal) provider of a functioning linux, and they are in the power of MS. Ouch.
