What about a reporting/temp ban/blacklisting service similar to Spamhaus or Spamcop, but for the web. The system would keep a list of active spammers and your web server would check for blocked IPs any time a POST, COOKIE or GET request is made (reg globals on) or when a POST or GET request is made (reg globals off). This way we can try to minimize the damage of these attacks just as we do with spam. Throw in an optional bayesian filter so IPs closer to the spammers are scrutinized along with investigation and banning of specific netblocks... Why hasn't this been done?

Oh come on, "email marketing" is a code word for "spamming" in the biz. OK, maybe, just maybe, your messages are "legit" and maybe you really do take people off your lists when they opt-out, but the reality is that savvy users shouldn't trust opt-outs. Too many spammers use it as a way of verifying good addresses to spam. It is much easier to simply report emails from unwanted "email marketers" as spam.

Email marketing does not always mean SPAM. Email remains a powerful and easy medium of communication. Spammers need to realize it's not difficult to set up a small web site, generate hits, get signups and build a true opt-in newsletter with far higher customer loyalty and conversion rates. They are wasting their time.

I sell an email list management PHP script (LMP) that DOES honour opt-out requests (if you choose to include a "remove link" code). I will agree that even with 100% double-in lists some subscribers find it easier/safer to hit "This is Spam" than risk clicking a remove link.

There is a HUGE market for my program. People need and want to follow up on their web site visitors, prospects, and clients.
    1. Sending legitimate, information-packed automated email courses are a great way to get people to come back to your site.
    2. You can keep informing your former buyers about your new products - if they like one of your products and the support they receive they are MUCH more likely to buy another one from you.
    3. You can send email to all of your site members, etc.
    4. Don't have advanced web design skills? You can start your own e-zine/newsletter and make THAT your online business.

My view is you should not click links in anything you did not specifically request online or offline. If you have signed up to a legitimate list or purchased a product from a hard-working individual/company, however, it is counter-productive (and just plain mean) to report their messages as spam. Chances are, they use a popular TRUE opt-out email list management script like mine and your removal request WILL be honoured instantly.

I think all ISPs simply need to incorporate a feedback loop similar to the one AOL offers. By piping email to a CGI script I can detect and 'click' the returned "remove link" to automatically remove complainants. This greatly reduces complaints against future messages.

Spam trap addresses do not seem to be working and are bringing down legitimate lists. A (small) number of my clients have had problems with these addresses being subscribed and even confirmed on their lists. Furthermore, I do (invite-only) web hosting for about 30 users of my program. From time to time a hosted client will import a purchased list containing spam trap addresses. These addresses aren't usually very hard to spot, especially when they are addresses @spamtrap.xxx, etc. I usually get a few hits when I search for email addresses like %spam% across up to 15 hosted clients per server. I do not allow my clients to import purchased or 'obtained' lists, but due to the 'freedom' of my program this isn't always honoured. Of course, those clients are promptly removed and the server's reputation is never harmed (for long).

You better cover your kids' eyes when you go to East Hastings, Vancouver, BC. There are 5000 meth/heroin/coke/crackheads and prostitutes wandering the streets any time of day. It's amusing watching them do the funky chicken walking across the road or jumping in front of your car proclaiming themselves Jesus when you're doing 55km/h with the doors locked hoping not to catch a red light...

Hookers are trash and they should not be defended. Instead, we should all throw pennies at them until they get off the drugs and get a real respectable career. I'd have respect for them if their job actually took skill, but how much skill does it take to lay on your back and be so high you don't even know what's going on. I *might* have more respect for a hooker who doesn't take drugs, but most of them down a 26er of vodka, do meth, heroin, coke, whatever, because they hate themselves for doing what they do. These are people who need help.

The kids today are fucked. I am usually an optimist and I have had faith in the general 'goodness' and compassion of the majority of people, but when I hear about the statistics in our schools today I become afraid. I have a little sister who is 14 and 95% of the people in her school do coke, sleep with 25 yr olds (these are 14 yr old girls), and generally just don't have any idea of what it takes to survive. The guys, in turn, are RAPING these girls at parties, growing up to be sex-obsessed assholes and pedophiles, etc.

These kids' parents give them whatever they want without ever teaching them wrong from right. I think there is an enormous responsibility for parents to prevent brainwashing from the media (and other people) where people are seen as objects. We need to teach the next generation about morals, tolerance, and respect instead of taking the easy way out, ignoring the problem, becoming 'zombies' ourselves, and ultimately dying unhappy.

The kids aren't paying attention. There are too many flashy video games, too many movies about being pimps, too many pop-star dumbass skanks, too many easy hookups with bar-sluts - it's easy to see why they might be distracted. They're being conditioned to live fast and die young.

The STDs are spreading more and more rapidly. It's time for the smart ones to cut loose and watch as the others build upon the reason for the eventual revolution. One day we can only hope, as it was just 50 years ago, being promiscuous will no longer be popular and we will see long-term marriage grow in numbers and people treating each other with compassion instead of as competition or a prize.

In my youth, age 11-12, I'd play text-MUDs and modem-based games with people from local chatboards. I spent one summer holed up in the basement pulling 24hr marathons. I did this again for a few years with Ultima Online when I was 15-18 or so. The games were so damn fun it led to social ineptitude and a lack of physical health. I sold out friends due to my passion for gaming.

There are dangers - they are addictive as hell - probably just as prone to abuse as drugs. :-) I can't say I ever want to stop, except when my pinky hurts from being in crouch position too much as a l33t n00b-killin' offensive;) sniper.

Of course there will always be plenty of all types of people, including the normal people who don't deal with stress by becoming reclusive or those with 'less-addictive' personalities. Thankfully for them they won't ever have to go to video gamer rehab. (Where do I sign up... ?)

All these years later I'm glad I gained the experience I did with computers... Between games I was loving formatting my dad's work files because Doom2 or C&C came with a virus. I delved into programming at first by writing scripts for "Telix" terminal software so I could gain EXP in the text-mud of the day.

Now I sell and support my own PHP script from home and make a tidy income with various complimentary affiliate products. I have a girlfriend, but I smoke too much. Somehow I blame myself for withdrawing because so many people told me I was fucked up. I'm not as retarded as I once was but it was pretty scary/stupid for a good 9 years.

I still have to game (usually 1st person shooters, no more MMORPGS!) at least every 1-3 days for, preferably, at least an hour to get my fix.

Maybe if I just repeat "I'm going to be ok." to myself I'll stop wasting time with useless discussion like this.

I believe that everything is addictive. If you have a thought once I believe you are more likely to 'retread' that old path and re-think that thought. Likewise, if you do something once you are drawn to do it again. So my question is... Why? Is it that it's 'addictive'? Or could we be inclined to conserve 'energy' when acquiring knowledge and hence seek a deeper understanding of things we've experienced as opposed to brand new things?

Habits, addiction, conditioning - is it all the same?
