  1. 5 points for the emotive article title on A $200-Million Floating Nuclear Plant? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Nuclear plants provide a large chunk of the worlds power (especially in Europe), and even accounting for the Chernobyl disaster have accounted for less environmental damage than convetional coal fired plants. Throwing the word "Chernobyl" into the title is nothing more than a beat-up.

Yes... there is actually a Pi World Ranking List!

  4. People will be forced to upgrade to Vista on Windows Monoculture Myopia Revisited · · Score: 1

It's all very well knowing that Vista adds nothing compelling enough to upgrade, and that WinXP still does the job just fine, but the Microsoft EULA does not allow you to move your old OEM copy of Windows XP to new hardware, so when your old PC dies or becomes obsolete, you'll have to buy a new one with whatever flavour of Windows is going.

Sure there will be those noble few who buy a bare-bones system and drop their own OS (Linux?) on there, but by and large, Joe Average, as well as Big Corporation wants Windows.

I guess the fact that she was signing up for "internet access" got it posted on slashdot, but that's not the issue. The issue was her ability to understand and sign a contract. The comment by Liberal MP Paul Burstow gets to the point.
He said: "It is nonsense to assume those over the age of 70 cannot understand this sort of package, especially with the huge explosion of 'silver surfers' using the net."
No Paul, I'm afraid it's not nonsense... it's in fact common-sense. Over the age of 65 around 3 people in 100 will have Alzheimers and that risk doubles every five years. I have personal experience of a person who was wandering around buying houses and withdrawing large sums of money from banks, and nobody questioned what was happening. This caused untold frustration for the family. Full marks to Carphone Warehouse for having a policy like this.
  8. Lost sight of what an OS is?? on A New Kind of OS · · Score: 1

If an OS was simply just that... an "operating system"... then it wouldn't have to morph. That is the job of the applications. An OS only needs to provide an interface between the applications and the hardware. An OS doesn't need to include virus scanning, firewalls, defragging, etc....

Remember when an OS could fit on a single sided 5.25 floppy disk?

  9. Speed the problem? on Teen Creates Device to Track Speeding · · Score: 1

This is based entirely on the premise that speeding is the problem, when in fact in most cases it's not. Inexperience, fatigue and alcohol and drug use can all cause accidents both above and BELOW the speed limit. Almost all "speed related" accidents also involve one of the above issues. So why the focus on speeding? Well it's the easiest to target and generate revenue from. It's also a win-win for the government due to the following two arguments. 1) fatalities decrease - "ticketing speeders works to lets increase enforcement (and revenue)" 2) fatalities increase - "we need more enforcement to combat speeding (and generate revenue)" Call me cynical but I'm from Victoria, Australia where speed cameras are proliferating and the tolerance is 3km/h!!! All in the name of safety???

Over-hype??? Surely by definition, if something has been "hyped" (overpromoted) it's already over-hyped (over-overpromoted). That's the whole point of the word Hype
  11. What do you call a hit? on Why There Are No Hit Indie Games · · Score: 2, Interesting

How many copies do you need to turn over, or dollars do you need to make to be call "a hit". The http://www.liveforspeed.net/ racing game is an excellent sim, and pretty damn popular and uses a fairly unique bit-by-bit sales model.

Initially they produced Section 1, sold it cheaply which allowed further development, then produced Section 2... etc. etc.

By the time they finish, the racing public will have paid a total price similar to todays mass market games, but spread out over a year or two.

Not a good analogy. Forget cutting the gas... just issue a speeding fine.

  13. Re:Move towards wind or hydro. on New Nuclear Power Plants in the next 5 years · · Score: 2, Insightful

Unfortunately resources like wind power and solar power are what you call PEAK LOADING, whereas coal and nuclear fuels are BASE LOADING. Base loading power sources can provide a solid steady reliable source of power, which is what we need to run a civilisation. Peak loading power sources can only supplement the base load, but can never replace it because of their very unreliable nature. Only hydro comes close to being base loading, but still depends on the weather. An extended drought (like we see in Australia sometimes) will see dam levels drop and the power source disappear.
