  1. Re:Interesting but... on Virgin-Universal Deal Offers Unlimited Music, Goes After File Sharers · · Score: 1

I agree that 128k is not good enough, but once you go beyond a certain sound clarity, the music actually feels cold and artificial.

It is possible to get "too clean", just like you wouldn't be comfortable living day to day in an operating room.

  2. How about reason 5? on Virgin-Universal Deal Offers Unlimited Music, Goes After File Sharers · · Score: 1

This is stupid. People like yourself are obviously not going to pay no matter what because there is a free alternative. Please just stop trying to justify yourself and just say, "I like free stuff, and since I can get it, I'm not paying!" At least it would be honest instead of hiding behind a thinly veiled curtain of "complaints."

    how about reason 5.

"This 'deal' allows some unaccountable third party to arbitrarily disconnect my internet at a mere accusation"

if universal wants to offer their ENTIRE catalogue at a flat fee independent of ISP "sanctions", then i'll go for it. If they continue this campaign to "suspend" people's internet connections, they dont get one dime of my money to justify their "proof of concept" to legislators in support of their disgusting "3 strikes" laws.

  3. Sorry.. saturday night live. on Introducing the Warpship · · Score: 1

look more closely at this page it says in small print everywhere:

    "SNL transcripts"

shatner never said it, it was a saturday night live sketch.

  4. The author claims to have made actual calculations on Introducing the Warpship · · Score: 1

I suspect the paper is much more mathematically in depth than this, since the conversation detailed a couple links in indicates actual energy calculations have been made, indicating much less energy would be required than previously thought.

Keep in mind this has been simplified for the "average high school audience" for whom the major news outlets write.

I'd love to see the actual writeup, but think that would be too far to the other extreme of the qualification spectrum for me to understand.

  5. Tortious Interference is illegal. on Virgin-Universal Deal Offers Unlimited Music, Goes After File Sharers · · Score: 1

This is an act of Tortious Interference

Tortious interference with contract rights can occur where the tortfeasor convinces a party to breach the contract against the plaintiff, or where the tortfeasor disrupts the ability of one party to perform his obligations under the contract, thereby preventing the plaintiff from receiving the performance promised.

I expect lawsuits on this ground, and mass defection to other ISP's

  6. How is this net neutrality related? on AT&T, Verizon Moving Into Gaming · · Score: 1

Honestly, until there is evidence they will be tampering with other game/vod services, I dont see how this is a net neutrality issue.

All indications are these services are opt-in rather than compulsory, and honestly I have no problem with that, as if they'll even show up on the radar of, say, blizzard entertainment.

  7. -5 "Troll" on Apple Patent To Safeguard 911 Cellphone Calls · · Score: 1

The headline is misleading, even from reading the summary.

the patent is not on 911 calls, it's on a dedicated "emergency mode" incorporating energy conservation and a customized interface.

Nowhere does this allow apple to sue other companies or individuals for using other mobile devices in the case of an emergency.

It's an interface patent, and while I don't agree with interface patents, the headline falsely implies the patent could endanger your life, rather than it just being a potentially frivolous one.

Visions from science fiction are always shown on a personal level. They almost never scale. Its like flying cars. Its would be great if you and I had them but I wouldn't want every dirtbag in my city to be flying them.

Actually calculations have been made and if every vehicle today could fly you wouldn't even need organized 'skyways' because the likelihood of collision would be equivalent to being struck by lightning.

  15. Allow me to clarify. on Canada's Conference Board Found Plagiarizing Copyright Report · · Score: 1

A "think tank" is just a group of non-experts who organize expert-produced information despite their lack of qualifications and understanding of the topics they discuss. They can dig up sources satisfactorily, but they get into serious trouble when they try to draw conclusions. Friends don't let friends believe a word written in a think tank.

Most powerful lobby groups out to disenfranchise the majority of a nation's populace will fund/establish "Think Tanks" which will report themselves as "independent" or "Unaffiliated", but which have the express purpose of legitimizing their agenda by releasing pseudo-statistical and pseudo-scientific reports.

"think tanks" essentially are designed to find creative ways to backfill propaganda.

If you have a decent CV, i'd dump that job of yours as soon as the economy picks up, and tell them exactly why. Encourage others who are talented contributors to do the same. When the company sees its most productive members going byebye they will cease with the policy.
