I think I'd be happy if my ISP implemented this so-called "email tax", provided that it was applied directly to lowering my bill. I pay $50 a month - which is about average for cable broadband in the US (in my experience). Anything that lowers my cost is welcome. Plus, I have *never* used my ISP provided email address, so I'd never see a single piece of certified spam from this endeavor. I don't see a downside.

Now if my ISP were to use this money for purposes other than lowering my bill - or perhaps increasing my speeds - I'd be entirely against this idea.

I'd say at least 50% of the women my wife has worked with (researchers in various biology/chemistry fields at multiple research universities) are involved with tech guys (CS or some other form of engineering). So, all you single geeks, don't give up! There is a female bio geek waiting for you somewhere.

Mike: So, this usenet thing is pretty big, right? How can find every usenet provider?

    Joe: Good question...

Mike: I have an idea. We can post a story on /. that praises GUBA. Then, sit back as we watch all the /. posters make comments like "GUBA sux, xyz is soooo much better". Once we have the names of all the competing usenet providers, we can swoop in and shut them all down.

Joe: Excellent idea. Is it ok if I keep using it for porn until we have to shut it down?

Now, I'm not aware of any reason the OpenDocument spec wouldn't provide all the needed functionality, but one may exist. In that case, it would be nice if they could choose to use another format. I just hate to dictate what technology other people must use. I prefer the approach that our Malaysian friends are taking, where if all other things are equal the OSS product wins.
