I would love to see the floppy make a disappearing act, but we need a replacement for it, an 8-32 MB bootable flash disk would be best.

But I do not believe the h/W makers are in a hurray to kill the floppy otherwise they could have done it a long time ago. I think they see it as a low cost item that they charge for it 3 times their cost.

  9. a portable 30 gb 2.5" USB drive on 1GB USB Drive on a Keychain · · Score: 1

A friend bought one of those for $240 and he travels with it all the time. it fits in his shirt pocket and all he needs is a usb cable. To me this looks like a lot better deal than the $900 1GB keychain. the good thin is if you wish you could replace the 30GB disk with what ever capacity available. I am told 80 GB is the most at this time.

  10. But Linux is harder than it really is on Making Linux Look Harder Than It Is · · Score: 1

The fact that I can never get my basic audio and video cards recognized on the spot is an indication that more work needs to be done. I have a P-II IBM PC that I always have to manually intervene to make sure things work right every time I try out one of the distro's on it. With windows it will most like work out of the box or you will find the drivers with little work, but with Linux a lot is involved. Then there is the latest and greatest hardware that are not supported by Linux unless you are one of those who know where to find the source that you can tweak and compile for your kernel level.

I love using linux at home and playing with the latest kerenls but I still have not tried to convince any of my friends to switch to linux for those reasons and others.

We always hear about the Concept PC's yet they always go back to the 1980's technologies of the floppy, slow serial, slow parallel etc. IR Wireless keyboard and mouse were here more than five years ago and last month I tried one that was very reliable and cheap. Nothing is new here.

The concept PC of 200X is one that sheds all the bottlenecks of the 80's and 90's. Unfortunately every PC maker talks the talk but does not walk the walk.
