What ideas did Mr. M. come up with while at Microsoft ? He's an apparent expert at getting between the talent and the money. Time for him to go away... Begone Nathan, ye scoundrel.
Right, this action is unconstitutional. Poor old New York State is scrambling for the dollars to pay the promised penisons, and lamely attempt to fix its crumbling, antique infrastructure.
Dollar grab - pure and simple.
Great, we have been paying outrageous rates for years for the telcos to build their infrastructure and this is the "thanks" we get.
Thank goodness the carpetbagger (non-nepotism ) nig-nog Powells are running the show , we'll get a good hearing in Washington - whoops, not !!
Yes, I used LOGO (on a TI994A). I realize that LOGO was a precursor to Smalltalk. And, I thought LOGO was brilliant at the time. The abstraction betwixt man-machine was handled brilliantly, IMHO.
I think that I have now seen too many brilliant products smashed by marketing.
My short list includes : DRDOS, ATARI ST, AMIGA, NeXT and NextStep, Geoworks, GNU/Linux, Berkeley BSD, Sun, and the Motorola 68k.
Please pardon me for being cynical about the limited choice of products we have now. Some of these products I like(d) are bound to be smashed as well.
It's not as if Oracle and your flavor of Linux are incredibly intertwined.
When I switched to Mandriva from RedHat, and the Oracle installation program barked at me, I just edited the "/etc/release" file. I'm not running some huge Oracle application on this desktop.
I've been around the block a few times. I've noted that one of the founders, Bill Joy, "probably" brought over a lot of the code from the Berkeley distribution to Sun OS ( pre Solaris, of course).
Well, it has finally come to this. All, that hard work and brilliant engineering over many years... All for a few bucks' cheap advertising, streaming video, audio , and pr0n
Among family , I keep my trap shut about technical matters.
The PR regarding Microsoft is so effective that Bill Gates is regarded as the savior among the clueless (as in all my relatives), and Microsoft is the Orthodox Church.
It really does NOT matter that I think that he is a greedy weasel, and always has been (since the Homebrew Computer Days).
My last great hope in the SYSTEM is that the Supreme Court of this land will recognize that software patents are as nonsensical as making mathematical formulas "IP" or patentable (if that is a valid word).
This isn't the first disgusting display I've seen of a monopoly scrambling for that last nickel out of the tire treads of the parked cars - I witnessed "THE PHONE COMPANY" doing the same thing.
We have a winner !!!
Plus, where are they gonna find the slave labor (grad students) to write it this time ?
Vint Cerf ought to be clipping coupons, and the Feds need to learn how to secure their laptops.
Well you have to admire how Sir Richard parlayed his position as a manager to some rock groups into a legendary billionaire. You have to wonder if he's bored now, reaching out to the real stars ?
Hrmm. My wife just bought a new HP - January 30th . They forced her to have a Vista OS on her machine (an HP).
Already, Microsoft has forced several upgrades on this machine. You cannot postpone; some 'bot just downloads and restarts your computer. Not well-behaved, IMHO.
I've looked at Vista on her machine, and it sure reminds me of a MAC, or "AfterStep" which I ran on my Slackware box back in the 90's.
Wife's Mom also upgraded (10 year old Win 98 Compaq). Grandma is quite pleased , though I think the slim, light LCD monitor is her favorite feature.
I'm being a nice boy and maintain my silence and bite my tongue, for the moment.
Ya know what ? Fsck Red Hat ! I bought their boxed sets for a couple years, and supported their product. They are are just greedy stinking bastards, and their distro sucks (see RPM)! By the way I got around Oracle's silly ( back in the day) stance of "we only support Red Hat 5.x" by editing a text file. Duh ! Suck Me Red Hat

Here's another 4 letter word for the Sun guys I've met: PREP And that's the word for their downfall, too

Yes, Red Hat has re-entered the desktop market.
I bought 2 boxed sets for the x86, and one boxed set for the Sparc back in the 90's.
It stands to reason I won't put up with this. Now is the the time for overthrow of the US Senate - they no longer represent the people of the US.
More irredentism from the Muscovites ? This is NOT news. I'd better check for Polonium in my coffee tomorrow, though, after posting this.

I agree that Sun is a dying concern.
Nuke 'em !
I would suggest that folks read "Accidental Empires" by Cringely for a bit of insight.
Does the altruistic "Gates Foundation" offset the economic harm done by a de-facto monopolistic Operating system ?
In my opinion, it does not.
I guess we have to find other measures of success other than profit.
FUCK OFF - SLASHDOT

Java did not make the list ? There's always next year !!

Kudos to the Firefox team for the effort . I appreciate your work, and it just keeps getting better. Bravo !
Great !! No precision here. No engineers, either, evidently.
Life sucks . Fsck you.
What's hot ? Being under thirty and making squat - from my perspective , piss on on all the HR types - let them do the work.
