I think it is about time someone took a stand against companies pumping shit out to the customer before it is ready. ... It's JUST a GAME BOX!!! Hello!!!
If it's not well-designed, DON'T BUY IT! No one is being forced to buy these XBoxes, and as it (apparently) is clearly stated in the manual, you shouldn't put it on carpet. Not that hard.

Intentional or not, that's a horrible pun.

Agree'd. One example is the myth they busted that you can fool the breathalizer by eating various substances. They got drunk, then ate a few different things (something like 5 dfferent materials), none of which changed the results, and declared the myth busted. Well, Adam did anyway; Jamie seemed reluctant to declare it busted.
What I don't understand about all this Sony Rootkit nonsense is why. Why did Sony do this? Do they thank that preventing the less-technical people from ripping their CDs will somehow prevent it from hitting P2P? If the customer has already bought the damn CD, what does Sony gain by breaking their computer??
The customer buys the CD, then tries to rip it to place the tracks on his/her iPod.
The rootkit breaks the computer and doesn't allow any ripping to occur.
Customer either doesn't care and throws away the CD or vows not to waste any more money on CDs that will break his/her computer.
Couldn't agree more. I'm a somewhat amateur C/C++ programmer, and I love using MSVC++ 6.0. The syntax highlighting, auto-indent, and file management are really the only features I use. I can code without them. I wrote (poor) PHP using Notepad for about a year, then found EditPad Pro, which does little more than syntax highlighting and auto-indenting (still use it for simple tasks like PHP and HTML editing), and have in the past year moved to MSVC++ for actual programming. I'm currently making a homebrew game for the PSP in C, but still use MSVC++ for the features I mentioned earlier.
I don't think that your IDE should affect how well-written the code you write is. If you write poor code, you're a bad programmer, regardless of your IDE. And if you're learning how to program using the IDE's auto-generated code... I look forward to seeing you on The Daily WTF soon.
Like you, I haven't bought any CDs for years. I don't really like any kind of music that the RIAA sells, so I don't buy or download any of their crap. I agree that we (the public) need to do something, but what? A boycott among/.'ers will only get us so far. There has to be a way to reach the wider public to support this boycott.
Yes, but the official Google Toolbar is much more useful. When I switched to FF, the Google Toolbar was the thing I missed most from IE. Probably my favorite feature is that the toolbar matches what you type in the google search box.
As an aside, does anyone know how to change the order of the toolbars in FireFox? I want my bookmarks folder toolbar to be below the google toolbar. Any way to do this? I couldn't find it in the customize menu...
About the only "benefit" I see to ratios is that it might keep files available with seeds longer.
I think that's what the GP was saying. If people have this hack to get around the upload ratio requirements they won't stick around to seed, destroying one of the most important aspects of BitTorrent (the trust that people will seed once they finish downloading).
This article reports on a godsend to the Slashd^H^H^H^H^H^HLinux community and only ~230 comments? Even the static-man article that had more holes than swiss cheese got more than that.
Are all of the Linux fanatics off buying these laptops, or what?
I have to agree with what Tony said, so long as he wasn't talking about games/animation (as you were). I haven't been programming long (still in high school), but I do realise that most programming isn't math beyond basic algebra -- unless you get into entertainment (animation, games, AI, everything you mentioned). Programming a physics or graphics engine takes tons of higher level math - the physics engine for my current project is very heavily based on vectors, and involves trig and such.
Some programming does heavily rely on higher level math, but the vast majority of it does not.
I totally agree with everything you said. However, I absolutely hated Wind Waker. My distaste for it had nothing to do with the graphics, it just wasn't a fun game. "Sailing" for (literally) up to 10 minutes was not fun, no matter how excellent the game looks. Sailing around the world looking for 8 insignificant little charts (remember - it can take up to 10 minutes to get from point A to point B) was not fun and seemed like something they threw in just to increase the playtime. The minigames that they had were crap (first to come to mind is the Battleship simulator), there was almost nothing in the way of sidequesting (think getting the Biggoron's Sword from OOT). One thing they had similar to a sidequest was the pictograph statue thing. God, that was horrid - not to mention totally pointless. The story wasn't engrossing, and honestly, the gameplay was not difficult enough.
Probably the part that sticks in my mind as the biggest bastardisation of gameplay was the bullshit they pulled with the boomerang. For those who haven't played, you would look around the room targetting up to 5 pre-programmed objects, then release a button and the boomerang would inexplicably fly to each and every target, then back to your hand. Compare that to the boomerang in OOT which actually took some skill to aim (or Z-Targetting, but that was only one object). WW's boomerang pissed me off.
People are always saying that graphics don't make a game great. They're right. This game proves that; Wind Waker had excellent graphics, but was simply not fun to play.
Get over yourself. This is a TECH NEWS SITE. I don't come here to learn about what's going on down in Louisiana. I come here to learn about what's going on in the world if IT. The world of computers. The world of Linux. The world of Microsoft, C++, GCC, AMD, Intel... COMPUTERS. Sure, what's going on down there is sad, but I still have a life that I plan on living. This life involves reading/. for TECH NEWS.
Arguing with your words instead of your point, but I enjoyed Zelda:OOT for N64 a _lot_. It was the second Zelda game I'd ever played (after Link's Awakening), and is probably my favorite video game, with M.C. Kids in a close second. In fact, the NMZ's in my name stand for Needmorezelda, which was my original screenname for about 5 years:)

What's wrong with today's youth...
Uhm, who said anything about "today's youth"?

I don't get it.
I wonder if this will have any impact on the no smoking bans we have seen in recent years.
So long as they keep smelling like shit, that's a big NO!
I love how this got modded funny at least twice =)

Woah... flashback to third grade there. Are the editors not awake this early in the morning?
At least this guy has not also put thousands of innocent humans to death.

As a fellow Type I Diabetic, this post made me laugh =) If I could, I'd mod you up.
Good point. /me mods parent up.
This works on any OS! Amazingly effective technique!
