  1. Re:The sad thing is... on Updated Slashdot Advertising Policy · · Score: 2

Do you really have so little of a sense of humor. Why do you people keep coming here if you don't like it. NONE of these news stories originate at slashdot. NONE of these news stories are modified by slashdot. O.K. some of them are misrepresented in the titles but there are ALWAYS links to the stories. Plus the source to slash is open so instead of running off at the mouth about how opressed you are by slashdot you could run your OWN version of slashdot. Sometimes I think most people just need something to be angry about.

I don't know how to reply to this other than to say it's bullpucky. What about the desire to live within a decent society. What about the desire to be able to get along with those around you. No God there, although it certainly makes room for God, which your Closed minded Dogmatic argument doesn't reciprocate.

  5. Re:And they say math and music are related. on PressPlay and MusicNet vs. Artists · · Score: 2

My point is it's pretty misleading in the story. It makes it sound like they are getting less than 1 tenth of a cent which isn't true. This is not a judgment of the amount. Just the reporting.

  6. And they say math and music are related. on PressPlay and MusicNet vs. Artists · · Score: 2

Some figure they will earn less than $0.0023 per download -- yes, that's hundredths of a penny.

A penny is one hundredth of a dollar so the figure shown above is .23 cents or 2.3 tenths of a penny not hundredth. But still it's a rediculous compensation for the charge.

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

Interesting. Most compression algorithms rely on certain patterns(generally repetition) within the data. I suppose if they are claiming 100:1 on any data then yes, but if this turns out NOT to be a hoax(not likely) then I'd bet the algorithm will only run on a data set once.

  23. Fast Track on Fast Track to a CS Degree? · · Score: 1

It seems to me you've already taken the fast track, and now you want all the advantages of not taking the fast track?
If there were truly no advantages to getting a degree over just working then you wouldn't be stuck. Although you probably know as much as I(or more, I'm fairly new in the industry) about programming.
I don't like to look at it as an 'old boys club' where you have to pay the dues to get in, but I leared a lot in college besides programming. I learned a lot of math and lit and Physics and social engineering.
If I were hiring someone to do a project I wouldn't really care about anything except their coding skills, but you say you want to advance, if I were hiring a manager I would want someone with the more rounded experience.
If you really have been getting 50% bumps per year take some of your savings, bite the bullet and go to college.
