Do you really have so little of a sense of humor. Why do you people keep coming here if you don't like it. NONE of these news stories originate at slashdot. NONE of these news stories are modified by slashdot. O.K. some of them are misrepresented in the titles but there are ALWAYS links to the stories. Plus the source to slash is open so instead of running off at the mouth about how opressed you are by slashdot you could run your OWN version of slashdot. Sometimes I think most people just need something to be angry about.
Given the length of time your ride on the space elevator and for the consideration of others. PLEASE do not ride the elevator after eating mexican food.
I don't know how to reply to this other than to say it's bullpucky. What about the desire to live within a decent society. What about the desire to be able to get along with those around you. No God there, although it certainly makes room for God, which your Closed minded Dogmatic argument doesn't reciprocate.
My point is it's pretty misleading in the story. It makes it sound like they are getting less than 1 tenth of a cent which isn't true. This is not a judgment of the amount. Just the reporting.
Some figure they will earn less than $0.0023 per download -- yes, that's hundredths of a penny.
A penny is one hundredth of a dollar so the figure shown above is.23 cents or 2.3 tenths of a penny not hundredth. But still it's a rediculous compensation for the charge.
The only three majors of all of my friends who actually are working in their majors are. Teaching, Computer Science and accounting. Basically everyone else is either working in computers or teaching at a community college. That should say something.
Slashback brings you more words tonight on catching CS cheaters
Damn! I thought I was finally going to be able to start playing Counterstrike again without all the freakin cheating! Turns out it's just some school thingie... Sigh.
This is different because it's not Redhat or S.U.S.E, etc.. moding up the vote. It's people who
like and use the product. The difference is that M$ could profit off of the poll (obviously it thinks it will or it wouldn't take the time to cheat).
Interesting. Most compression algorithms rely on certain patterns(generally repetition) within the data. I suppose if they are claiming 100:1 on any data then yes, but if this turns out NOT to be a hoax(not likely) then I'd bet the algorithm will only run on a data set once.
Hmmm... if you read my comment you would have noticed that I don't have time to play it right now. It would have been nice if it was still there later.
Putting up a link to a lisa2 webserver on slasdot is like tickeling the old lady's feet who is holding up your car with her bare hands while you change your oil... Nice going... it's crashed.. I bet you're very proud:)
It seems to me you've already taken the fast track, and now you want all the advantages of not taking the fast track?
If there were truly no advantages to getting a degree over just working then you wouldn't be stuck. Although you probably know as much as I(or more, I'm fairly new in the industry) about programming.
I don't like to look at it as an 'old boys club' where you have to pay the dues to get in, but I leared a lot in college besides programming. I learned a lot of math and lit and Physics and social engineering.
If I were hiring someone to do a project I wouldn't really care about anything except their coding skills, but you say you want to advance, if I were hiring a manager I would want someone with the more rounded experience.
If you really have been getting 50% bumps per year take some of your savings, bite the bullet and go to college.
If a site goes down, then yes the net changes. It's a dynamic system. But if an entire corner of
the net gets partitioned then each partition is unreachable from the other. And the net is acutally 2 nets at that point. Since the 'net' is an amorphous thing it's not possible to say which part is the 'real' net and therefor each half is unreachable from the other.

why do you bother coming back?

Sorry, couldn't resist.
Actually I should have added another option. Back in school for a teaching, CS/CIS, Accounting degree:)

Of a good old wav. Except maybe for pure vinal, but is that a codec?
Just go to the local Mom and pop computer part/repair store. They probably have 10,000 sitting in a bowl in the back
Allow me to praise you! thou art 31337:)
Think of it as running on 'antique hardware' you get extra geek points for that.

What has been done here is to use subatomic particles to store information about coherent light signals.

LOL the encoding is based on the dewey decimal system.

... without the (relative) fragility that comes along with desktops.
Do you mean desktops or laptops?

I was really looking forward to playing this when
I had more time:(. What about the people who just bought it, are they SOL?

At this point why not just give a gift certificate. It's the same thing.
