I see a collaboration between several European nations and the European Space Agency to get student involvement in space technology.
What kind of opportunities do we have here in the US to do something similar? Is NASA putting together a student cooperative to put a satellite in space? Bill O'Reilly and friends said that we're the #1 superduperpower, but we aren't doing stuff like this. Why?
In the bit of undergraduate research that I've done, I've seen people forge data regularly out of laziness. Sometimes numbers were off from what was expected, but instead of redoing a run of the experiment, they just put in what they thought it should have been. The numbers are reasonable, but still, it's lying.
Anyone else have experience on this? I'm going to assume that graduate research is better with people who are more serious and care about what they do.
Sadly, I think we're at that point now. A pay raise of cost of living is better than no pay raise. No pay raise is better than no job. Welcome to the modern economy.
I wonder if they took into consideration the difference in latitude and the global dimming factor. A recent study shows that less light is actually making it to the ground in modern times (5% reduction between 1960 and 1990).
That said, I personally believe that it is a myth - getting all the mirrors at the right place at the right time with the proper coordination just wouldn't happen.
Liquid latex is also a very nice thing to make fake body parts, that you can stick between a door or something.
And if you have some leftover latex, it can be used to make some great latex fetish wear.
It'll tell us something about greenhouse gases

ESA Venus Mission Delayed

From the article:
Composed chiefly of carbon dioxide, Venus' atmosphere generates intense greenhouse warming, whereby trapped solar radiation heats the surface of the planet to an average of temperature of 467C.
Experts think Venus could teach us more about how the Earth's climate will respond to the release of greenhouse gases resulting from human activities.
It will tell us what many of us know - that putting too much CO2 into the atmosphere will heat up the planet. Unfortunately, those with real power to do anything about it will continue to aim for quick gains with little regard for the future.
I know someone will respond about how the earth naturally spews CO2, but many of our processes that produce CO2 also produce pollutants such as CO, arsenic, and PCBs. These other pollutants are proven to be dangerous. Why does nobody (hello media?) ever mention that?
Well, he admitted it

"Shrinking corporate tax revenues opens the door to a hot campaign issue. Democrats could accuse the Republicans of expanding "corporate welfare" - rewarding generous corporate campaign givers with tax breaks. That may be one reason Bill Archer (R) of Texas, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, just announced a hearing on corporate tax shelters on Nov. 10. Treasury will be testifying."
I think I'll take the CS Monitor's definition of corporate welfare over most.
Also, when they get to keep their money "without being tortured and murdered" and we pick up the tab for cleaning up their toxic waste, for example, that's corporate welfare.
It's likely that you're not referring to subsidies, but rather to the fact that people are "allowed" to keep a good deal of their money and property without being tortured and murdered.
I'm talking about subsidies, the lobbyists who get special favors in the form of laws that the rest of us don't get, relaxed environmental regulations, etc.
Also, how often does it happen that a multi-billion dollar corporation makes it a year without paying any taxes at all? More often than it should. And people with lots of money to invest can easily walk away with zero or little in taxes. Look at John Kerry and his extremely wealthy wife. He paid a higher tax rate than she did! Using various tax shelters, she only had to pay 11.5%.
Sigh... Why does the gov have to be parents for everyone?
News today says that someone is starting a recall effort to get Schwartzenegger out of office.
I still can't believe they voted "the groper" into office. California is supposed to be so liberal and progressive, yet they put him in power.
It's no secret that corporations are greedy and will do anything they can to increase their wealth. Them charging more for music is minor compared to the grand scheme of things.
The wealth has to come from somewhere. That somewhere is the poor below. They talk of trickle economics for the the poor getting money from the wealthy, but it's quite the reverse. Wealth, often in the form of labor, flows from the bottom up. If not, they wouldn't be so rich.
To back this stance, it is worth nothing that the wealthiest wealthy grew wealthier between 2003 and 2004, partially thanks to tax cuts. The poor, however, became poorer. During that time period the number of Americans living in poverty grew by 1.4 million. Source: this CNN article.
I'm not an advocate of pure communism, but what we have today isn't really capitalism, it's a crappy corporate welfare system that intentionally pisses on the poor.

I use Wiki to give me a clue about some item I am unfamiliar with, and I accept it as a layman's resource: not necessarily in depth and not necessarily completely factual.
Having said that, I used it last for a quick description of what argyria is. However, when writing a paper for a chemistry class about the gravimetric analysis of nickel in an ore, I found a page with some useful info, but decided to hit some more trustworthy resources instead.
I'd pick on underwater basketweaving, but I'm sure someone would defend it for the difficulty in learning holding your breath long enough to get the weaving done.

If universities dish out Bachelor of Science/Art degrees in Madonna Studies (the musician), golf course management, and pig enterprise management, one would hope that they'd jump on this.
While people keep making references to Bill and Ted, let us not forget about the origin.
We can thank Joe Cocker who, back in the late 60s, gave us this wonderful instrument during one of his many drunken performances.

Be warned, though - Zelda is a gateway game. Next thing you know, you'll be experimenting with Mario or even worse: Grand Theft Auto.
