    Symbian was popular, but it was a disaster in terms of technology: hard to program with one of the worst mobile user interfaces ever conceived. Nokia needed to change to something else.

    ...but had a solution in place going forward with a unifying toolkit "QT" and two replacement in-house OS's Meego and Meltemi.

Ironically in the context of this article by creating a kernel that powers 75% of the opposition, and by releasing a new revision of it ever 3 1/2 months like clockwork [and in reference to your comments he does so by keeping a tight ship].

    Ironically your heros whether they be Bill of Steve were both considered bastards, but even their achievements get acknowledged here.

    The sad fact is whether Linus *kicks cats* (he doesn't) is nothing compared to his achievements. In reality they shouldn't matter anyway, he can wear his underwear on his head, stick pencils up his nose and say "wibble". Its the kernel that matters.

    To sell 6.6 million smartphones on Q4 XMAS quarter is a disaster.

    Even if you add two OS's together Windows/Symbian competitively it looks like Elops strategy of choosing a Windows Phone OS *only* over *any* other strategy looks stupid. In real terms it has taken the smartphone unit from being 2x as large as Apple and 4x as large as Symbian, and relegated Nokia to 10th largest smartphone manufacturer.

Google withdrew *alone* from China in a response to "evil"...What did they do when "Human Rights Watch praised the decision and urged other firms to follow suit in challenging censorship...on yeah right I remember *nothing*...Lets call them Microsoft who at the time by the "the Congressional-Executive Commission on China ...sharply criticized Microsoft for continuing to be complicit with China's censorship laws"...what about Apple??. Acting Alone Googles strategy was weak/stupid.

    If you seriously consider installing packages for another distro, you are the Windows target market and should probably switch.

    a .deb is the extension of the Debian software package format and will not work on windows. This is a link to a description of a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Package_management_system. Its one of the many major advantages over Windows, its why linux is trivial to maintain, and windows isn't.

    Tablets are ergonomic nightmares;

    I don't think its true of a 7" tablet which is essentially a book. Its more true for a 10" tablet...but then I would say the problem is from my experience is the weight after long periods...but I think the form factor reflects its use not the other way around.

    This is just an an advertisement for an iPad more along the lines of "Do you have hair loss?" its disgusting subterfuge, but nothing to do Betteridge...to make the law work you would have to change the headline you "Is this the end of the PC?"

    I'm not warning anyone against Android.

    Here it is, stop repeating propaganda paid for by Apple, and Micro$oft in the media, that is designed to justify the "you only license my device, so I will lock you out of it", its not a walled garden..its a police state desined to lock you into their platform..while extracting as much money from its cattle. Malware as you describe it on the whole is rare...claims otherwise are vastly overrated. Android is secure...saying otherwise is a lie.

    As for Malware...the sick thing is, regardless of platform, every damn program...sorry app is a piece of malware by my definition of the word, and its not relabled Angry Birds/Play Stores its your top ten Apps spying on every part of your life. Passing information about user's age, gender, and location, as well as unique identifiers for the phone.

    Android!? Better hardware than Apple?! LoL

    Absolutely They rebadge cheap hardware, massive mark-up with a logo on the back, cashing in on their perceived first mover advantage. A business model that is only a success in two places US/UK and nowhere else..due to its hardware being leased on a subsidised model...although Apple has made it clear you only license it. If you want the highest PPI; Screen Size; Fastest Processor; Most Cores; Best camera; including such diverse hardware choices as projector; keyboard; joypad, electronic paper not crippled by proprietary Standards for hardware software, or plagued by dropped calls; Lens flare; Antenna problems. (however Minor) at a better value 3-6 months before Apple announce it and a further year till they refresh it ..you go Android. Seriously put say a Galaxy III vs iPhone and start with price, and when it was launched :)

    P.S writing LOL on the end of a sentence is not a compelling argument.

    Those who recommend a Chromebook - they don't consider that there will be times when you have no internet connectivity.

    You should read the reviews on Amazon where the Chromebook is the best selling computer. In short it does not require a permanent internet connection :).

    Seriously let me break that long post down for you Android is "prone to Malware" and "Nobody wants it.". Wow Android has several layers of protection, cloud storage and is set to replace Apple so if it hasn't already. Advantages over Apple are not only price; better hardware/software, but also options with a real keyboard.

    At the end of the day the only similarity between Android and Windows is market share. The fact that you use the boogeyman of malware to try and scare users *here* where the vast majority here have a great deal of familiarity with malware is just a nonsense..I don't think it works with the less technical either...who probably own an Android phone.

    Seriously...another post PC debate to advertise the iPad, my favourite part is the fact that its out of warranty!? If that sort of thing is a major issue. Do not go near an Apple product. The have got in trouble in both Europe (http://apple.slashdot.org/story/12/04/02/123207/apple-is-forced-by-eu-to-give-2-years-warranty-on-all-its-products) for breaking the law by offering year instead of the statutory two years for returns, and in China(http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/xinhua/2012-07-26/content_6549444.html) for putting used parts in new products that fair under warranty.

    While we are talking advertisements...and while I'm with Linus wanting higher pixel density on all his (and mine) electronics devices...lets not push another shitty marketing term from Apple, who ironically have lower pixel densities than the opposition offered at half the price (and as for the mini *rolls eyes*) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_displays_by_pixel_density

    The reality is having another article where iPad users, dutch rudder each other, everyone else I went out and bought a tablet (A Nexus 7)...and know exactly where the smaller more portable (capacitive) screen fits into my life, rather than the larger screen with the keyboard & mouse. Are we really meant to believe the author of this too lazy to search for "another post pc flamefest". Thank god Apples market share (down to 50%) in tablets is dropping like a stone, so we are not constantly bombarded with this nonsense.

    Seriously while the incompetent mother in the suspiciously convenient scenario , who if she can't afford a new computer more than every couple of years...an Apple product is not happening...give her a good value Chromebook...and a $2 surge protector....and visit more.

    very few like the 1200 horizontal resolution, 1080 is much prefered.
    powerpoint is more popular than word :D

    gimp is more popular than paint.net

    The Office Stuff is confusing, but in reality I suspect this is more about how the questions were asked but Office 60% OpenOffice 15% Works 15% ...with the rest on Docs/Live with a little overlap seems about right.

    For Internet Explorer Safari 9% Chrome 12% IE 20%...with a massive Firefox win at 64% again interesting as although Firefox/Chrome was expected to do well in this demographic The heavy bias to Firefox maybe a little surprising, but not unexplainable.

    You can picture how this survey was done, but you have listed nothing than unusual.

    Although off-topic GIMP(name aside) has always been a great program on every platform, and part of my stock install. Lately though the project has become amazing, check it out.

    Is their Office for Android in the works? Sounds to me like you're greatly overestimating the potential demise of Windows, just like Linux users have been doing for the decade I've been on /..

    Did I say windows is going anywhere!?...Microsoft are going to continue to be the horrible abusive monopoly on Desktop they always have been, The evil fucks are locking windows into General purpose machines making them glorified electronics, but those are being outnumbered by these smart devices from the likes of Amazon; Google; Apple.

    ...but then its me not underestimating the demise of windows; Its you underestimating the *importance* of mobile over the Desktop [and Office as a whole that argument is long gone]...and Microsoft's talk of ecosystems(seriously ffs), and diluting the desktop experience is not going to change that. As I said Android is becoming the dominant OS platform this year...Microsoft is old news.

    Considering the amount of stupid things a person can read here I don't lightly say this, but this is one of the dumbest things I've read in quite a long time. Second only to some asshat spewing racist remarks in a different thread I read a couple days ago.

    You need to pay attention, I am sorry that Microsoft is not the dominant Gaming Platform any more, Microsoft has been shitting on gamers for some time, and the after years of it playing second fiddle to its console, Today it tries to bad Adult games on the PC platform. Microsoft is Also unashamedly chasing Apple profits by locking down its platform to its store & Microsoft signed binaries this is not a secret...its common knowledge, its the whole reason for steam being offered on Linux (in my opinion all reason in the first place)..optional now...mandatory later. Windows is being locked down and Microsoft, not you have the key. Its not a secret. Stream entire business model is looking shaky.

    The reality is its Windows being removed at being the No.1 gaming platform, Currently having 1.25Billion users with Android having 625Million last quarter, with activations of 1.3Million daily. The figure currently being passed around is 1.5Million ignoring the Christmas surge, its set to overtake Windows this year...its top downloads...Games. Considering the thrust of your less offensive argument is market share...its Linux that is becoming the dominant platform.

    The reality is cross platform is becoming the norm, with Android becoming the goto platform, Linux is already benefiting for both the Massive Growth of Android...and the Abuse monopolist practices of Microsoft.

    Implying I am a racist rather than providing a compelling argument is a little sad.

    From the numbers, having Steam support linux games at all is pretty silly from the business perspective.

    Steam is supporting games *from* a business perspective. Its very existence is being threatened. In future steam may only exist OS X and Linux. Its mistake was not expecting this sooner, and not supporting Linux earlier. The reality is Windows is going to be overtaken by Android this year...it actually makes sense to produce games for Linux first, and cross platform is a must in today's new world.

    I buy a large number of games, most are cross-platform; DRM free and pretty cheap. I don't use steam because of DRM.

    Windows 8 has lower requirements than Vista/7.
    I am willing to bet that most Windows XP systems still in use are capable. I have an 11 year old old Pentium 4 PC that meets those requirements.

    One of the problems when Vista launched was most computers were running intel chipsets i915 wih 256mb or less and below that aren't going to be suddenly capable now, and would be less functional with Windows 8. That is ignoring all the hardware that won't work with Vista+ a lot didn't get drivers. Whatever you think of Windows 8. Its only worth getting on contemporary hardware with a machine (Maybe with good Vista hardware...if I was given a touchscreen monitor...but I'd wait for those to dip in price.)

    Even if you take into account every single device running Linux, it's still nothing compared to the number of devices running Windows.

    Windows PC is hovering around 1.25 Billion...and shrinking a little bit, Android had hit only 625Million End of last quarter with activations hitting 1.3million daily...the number people are quoting now is 1.5miillion(ignoring the Christmas spikes). Android is expected to pass Windows this year.

    Its kind of sad really. At least with Secure boot they can establish a few more years of lock-in, Go out like you came in I say.
