  3. Nope, capitalism can take care of this on UnBox Calls Home, A Lot · · Score: 2, Insightful

These companies typically lose money because the consumer realizes that their products aren't worth the price. Also, any bill related to this would have to be far too technical for congress to wrap its head around, resulting in something either ineffective or harmful.

I think Brazil is doing much better ecologically than we are, even if this "risk" to topsoil is real. Top soil can be managed through intelligent farming techniques, it can even be retained and replenished thanks to modern farming technology. Even fertilizers can be used to replenish mineral and nitrogen content of the soil, and while if used unintelligently this can lead to enviromental impacts, this is not a necissary consiquence.

Fertilizer requires a large amount of fossil fuels to produce.

Why do you need all that fuel anyways? Moving around a 2000lb vehicle with over a million parts which requires 50 square feet of paved space everywhere you take it is not a great solution to get a 150lb occupant from one place to another.

Even if there was a better fuel, the motor vehicle is still one of the worst possible solutions to the problem. The segway is not a great replacement as it doesn't provide protection from the elements. Even then, a $300 bicycle is much faster than a segway and much cheaper to own and operate.

  6. Why? on Google In-Flight WiFi? · · Score: 1

Why do you propose discouraging flying in favor of rail? Rail is not very practical in the majority of the US as it currently takes several days to cross the country. I'd rather spend the extra 20 minutes it takes to deal with checked baggage then waste 2.5 days in a seat. High speed trains require welded track rail and wider turns, so implementing them coast to coast would require entirely rearranging 3000 miles of track on several different routes. With the low population density of the most of the US, the costs would never be recovered.

Besides, you could just use EVDO, GPRS, or another 2.5/3G protocol. Why do you need wifi specifically?

Thankfully Linux users are safe from this, since anything related to audio rarely ever works well. The standard sound drivers included in most distributions are so horrid that not even Google's thousands of engineers can manage to keep them from segfaulting for more than a couple minutes. I guess they could avoid using any of the fancy drivers and stick with basic ALSA or OSS, but since only one application at a time can use sound with that method, it would probably already be in use by something else...

  8. Self Control should not be necessary on FBI Data Mining Students' Financial Aid Records · · Score: 1

The constitution limits the authority of government. It does not make exceptions for wars, which is intentional. A ruling administration should simply not be allowed to do many of the things this one has done under any circumstances. Self control should have absolutely nothing to do with it.

  12. Aren't every day items deadly? on Old Methods Used to Detect Liquid Explosives · · Score: 1

The real problem is that many everyday items such as box cutters have potentially dangerous uses. A bottle of vodka could be used to start a large fire, lithium ion batteries can be made to explode (and sometimes do so on their own), a number of relatively common chemicals (some even edible) can react to give off toxic gas.

The solution to the problem of terrorism is not technical in nature.

You can't alter a design to withstand every possible scenario. Do you expect someone engineering a car to make it safe to drive at 120mph if the guy assembling it doesn't put any bolts on to hold the wheels in place?
b Inspection and testing are used to guarantee that things work to their specified safety margins. Most companies split QA into a different department to prevent expensive product failure in the field due to pressure from the design engineers. When very high reliability is required, some purchasers (such as the DoD at times) even opt for a separate agency to do testing in order to prevent corporate politics from pushing a substandard product out.

Without proper oversight, even the most expensive bidder may produce substandard and dangerous work.

Wouldn't you just use the turbine to power an alternator instead in that case? My understanding was that the turbine cars of the 60s mechanically transfered energy to the wheels, which had some shortcomings. The first was that the turbine took a long time to warm up to full power. The second is that turbines require much slower changes in throttle than most automobile drivers would like.

It seems like their uses in a hybrid would overcome many of these disadvantages by converting to electricity first and using the battery for boost during the initial warm up.
