I know it's not a PB but here at the Census we have one 150TB array thats used for one project and not 170K employees.
It is interesting when you get in storage of this size. I remember sitting in a meeting where we discussed a storage cabinet we were ordering. The RAW size of the cabinet was 150TB but formatted it would be 100TB... 50TB is a lot of storage to "throw away" for redundancy / formatting! Considering at this price your paying about $10k+ a TB (With staff and infrastructure costs fractured in)!
I would kill for a decent recent diesel car over here in the states. Modern diesel engines are way more efficent then hybrids for a cheaper price. I still don't get why they are not common place over here. I assume because people still think of them as a enviromental disaster....
The article seems to contradict itself...
Not only can't you buy one, but the government says it's currently illegal for automakers to sell these green cars outside of the special states. Under terms of the Clean Air Act--in the kind of delicious irony only our government can pull off--anyone (dealer, consumer, automaker) involved in an out-of-bounds PZEV sale could be subject to civil fines of up to $27,500.
then...
It's not all the fault of the car companies. The crazy quilt of environmental regulations is forcing carmakers to design and build two versions of the same cars. And it costs real money to make a car this green. So in states where there are no regulations to force their hand, automakers don't want to have to boost their prices for the green versions--or to simply eat the extra cost and make less profit.
It DOES sound like the fault of the automaker. If they don't have to sell a cleaner car in other states why should they?
It's more expensive to upgrade then just replacing the hardware. You have to factor in staff/consulting costs as well.
A project I am working on currently costs around 60k/blade for a upgrade to new hardware. This costs factors in redundant attached SAN's, staff costs for tracking the plan, staff costs for migrating the hardware etc....
Hard to swallow considering they are going to do around 1500....
I beg to defer here. I made the mistake of putting this on my resume (which hasn't been circulated by *me* in the past year or so) and get a call a month asking if I want to do cold fusion. Most offers are in the 100k+ range and they all tell me its because they can't find anyone to do it.
I agree its a crappy solution but the market is there but mainly due to lack of interest on the programmers part.
While I can see the ACLU taking this to court for invasion on personal privacy I personally applaud this.
Those who break these type of laws and are still at risk for doing it again should have restricted privacy for the safety of others. More so when it involves innocent defenseless children.
Yes for the same reason coke is more popular then the generic stuff Sams Club / Safeway / Walmart etc etc etc puts out.
Sure people buy the generic stuff since it taste the same but much more consumers are brand savy and opt to choose Pepsi / Coke because they have heard of them before.
I'm not trying to say linux is generic but people will go after brands they know before resulting to the lesser known ones.
If anything I would say vista has increased PC sales. I know of a ton of people who just bought a new PC instead of going through the hassle of upgrading their existing computer.
As someone mentioned earlier you can not confuse/. with the general computer population. Dell offering linux has nothing to do with Microsoft but is them trying to capture a ninche market.
Yea but half the fun of college was going to college. Even if I was capabale of graduating in 1 year I wouldn't have. College was to much fun.... as many put it... enjoy your young years while you can. You have the rest of your life to be a grown-up....
Cable quality does matter even if it is digital. On very long runs a "1" can get rounded down to a "0" due to signal degration. The better the quality of the cable the longer you can go.
I'm not defending Monster by any lenght. They do make nice cables; however you can find the same thing for about 1/4th the cost else where.
I bought a $21 cable from blue jeans cable. The specs are the same as monster cable..... Check their cable spec pdf's if you don't believe it.
Its nice, thick and has gold plated connectors. Anyone who is into high end audio/video will tell you Monster sucks. Just check the cables of a "real" pro install (IE paying a decent company to hook your equipment up) and see what they use....

Lol I'm only using Oracle because of the Goverment.
And its Oracle 8.1.... yuck! Give me at least 10G ~.~
Hard drives also have the same limitation (You can only change the poll of a bit on the hard drive a certain amout of times). Its just you will never reach it before the mechanics of the drive fail.
This will only work if they can get the prices of flash down.
$50.00~70.00 per gb is still nothing in comparison to $0.40~$0.80 you can get on hard drives.

I think this is more aimed at Telesync copies of movies. Which are actually quite good. Not that I've ever seen one ....

I agree completely but unfortunately you have judges that give these people little to not sentences at all.

It looks like hes doing "My Little Teacup" during parts of it.
Its more important now as I have graduated to keep tabs on where my friends are. I find it very usefull ;-)
I think he meant what group / person put up the money ;-)
Haha that makes me wonder if the creator was a Futurama fan.
Thank you for stepping in and correcting this.
I'm willing my +10 Uber Saber to charity.
That was a new level of sad.
Anyways you are right though. I can see solid state drives taking over hard drives in the future. The less moving parts the better.
All I was trying to point out was its to early now for widespread adoption.
Its just a matter of time for flash.
If you RTFA you would see the target price is $750 and $1000 ... $6400 is the price of current flash hard drives in that size range.
This will only work if they can get the prices of flash down.
