You bring up a good point. It's especially pertinent in this environment where the current government's legitimacy is constantly questioned. The Obama Birth Certificate and the Bush V. Gore Supreme Court decision have both served to make one half or another of our country doubt that the current administration is REALLY the TRUE government for more than a decade.

It's been my experience that even the people who post news and political rants, seldom actually want to actually discuss the things they're saying. I had a guy post a rant about a political candidate. When I commented on it, politely expressing an opposing view and asking where he got his information, he first called me names, then accused me of drug-use, then complained about people always thinking they're experts and wanting to tell him how to vote. Finally told me to keep my political opinions to myself. This was all after he posted a political opinion in a public forum...
Needless to say, I removed the jerk from my "friends" list. I guess I learned not to put people on my friends list just because they lived in the same dorm as me in college.
I agree with Vectormatic. Just because its my job which I enjoy and I'm good at, does not mean I'm going to sit around doing it for free. If I have extra time on nights/weekends to do some coding, I'm going to bill for it.
I've been a developer for 13 years, at a half-dozen jobs. I've never been asked for a code sample, and I wouldn't have one to provide if I were.
Exactly. Working in software development for 12 years, I've worked on MANY projects that were off-shored at some point. Then they had to hire me to make it actually work.
Your comments make sense if you read the Slashdot headline and then commented. Now, go RTFA and see that you said exactly what the Vatican officials said, only with more smugness.
It's a problem because those sprawling houses take up more space -- displacing the natural environment that was there before the house. They also cause more pollution and use more resources.
But, if you want to go blaming everything on the "big scary government", I guess I can't stop you.
the healthcare bill-- which a majority of the voters opposed
Yeah, one of the problems with compromise is that noone is 100% happy with the result. Something like 37% of those opposed to the bill thought that it didn't go far enough.
Most areas in the US don't really have competing services. As far as I've been able to determine, I can only get broadband from my cable provider, and I live in an urban area. Of course, the cable provider also offers cable television, and VOIP services. They have serious incentive to throttle my Netflix, Hulu and Vonage.
While I don't completely agree with slashdottedjoe's politics, it should be pointed out that he was responding to devxo's comments which painted Europe with one big brush.
This seems to be more of a problem with the way US thinks about sex, while we here in Europe can just have it casually and not make a big deal out of it.
I find it hard to believe that all of Europe holds the same view, and I'm sure that the entire U.S. does not see sex in the same way.
...invoking Godwin's rule....

"Inverted senses"?
The "57 states" thing was a slip of the tongue. Obama didn't spend days/weeks trying to explain why he was right, and there really are 57 states.
I respectfully disagree. Hating people is always wrong.

No, it was because his mind-control ray didn't affect you.

at the gossip sites my wife reads
Yeah. Right. Your WIFE was reading them....
For some reason this made me imagine a Hobbit/Friday crossover.
Thorin: It's like its both of ours. We'll just keep it at my place.
Dragon: (knocks him to the ground) It's my hoard, Bitch!
Agreed.
Gandalf: I want you to go into that bag and find my ring.
Frodo: Which ring is it?
Gandalf: It's the one that says Bad Motherfucker on it.
Or trying to drive across town...
I'll bite...How could I have accessed "nearly any piece of human knowledge" while camping in 1981?
gad_zuki!, I think you touched a nerve with some people....
