As a parent of a school-aged kid I can tell you that this is not how it works. They don't send home a letter telling you they're teaching polynomials, evolution or T.S. Elliot.
However, they are VERY sensitive to potential lawsuits. Angry parents standing in the school office tend to get their way, regardless of the logic of their arguments. Stay involved. Ask your kids' teachers about the subjects they will be taught. Go to PTA meetings.
The parents who sit around waiting for letters to be sent home to them are the parents who have no say in how the school is run.
Any Gallifreyan worth his salt knows that Impossible Planets are held in orbit by a super-strong gravitational well generated by the ancient evil daemonic entity imprisoned within.
Geesh.
Either its just you, or you didn't know they did. While I don't necessarily think programming high is the most productive way to go, I have not seen any relationship between occasional recreational drug use and coding ability. On the other hand, I have noticed that programmers who occasionally partake tend to be more laid back and easy going in general. They are much less likely to exhibit Prima Donna Complex.
I'm a little bitter about Prima Donnas right now. I worked my butt off over Father's Day weekend (I'm a father) to get this project in on time, only to find out that another programmer is over a week behind because he decided to rewrite huge chunks of the app that he was specifically told not to rewrite.
My thoughts exactly. Maybe it wasn't the best idea for me to get a CS degree from a small private liberal arts college. But at least we never had this kind of BS. Our professors actually picked texts that they thought were the best for the subject.
Any professor who tried to fleece the students in this way would have been gone in no time flat. Perhaps there were too many "daddy's little angels" with lawyers for parents at my school for a professor to pull this crap.
In my school days, well cellphones were the size of a brick and too expensive for high school students to have. However, pagers were common. They were also commonly used for drug dealing and other criminal activities. The school rules clearly stated that if you were found to have a pager at school, it would be assumed that you had it for this purpose, the police would be notified and you would be held in custody until they arrived to deal with the situation.
Also, in my day there were a lot of kids in school that should have had this kind of thing done to them. If you read the entire report, it sounds like this kid was a bully. She tried to make other kids hide her phone for her. She also demonstrated that she felt no accountability for her own actions. Maybe now she'll think twice about being a troublemaker in school, and serve as an example to others.
I hear a lot of you whining and complaining because of how she was treated while at a place she was forced to be. Well, I feel sorry for the kid in her class who was trying to understand square roots -- but couldn't because every time the teacher tried to explain it, this girl's phone would beep.
Feel sorry for the kids that actually appreciate the free education that my tax dollars are paying for, rather than this sorry excuse for a person.
Isn't there a similar updater being installed with Google Apps on Windows? I installed Chrome, found that it installed "Google Update Service". I uninstalled both, and I've refuse to use Google Client-side apps since.
Who passed a law saying Gays couldn't get married?
I've always had a problem with this characterization of this debate. Noone has said that a gay man cannot get married. They've simply said he cannot marry another man. I'm straight. I'm not allowed to marry another man either. I don't have any right that the gay man doesn't have
Don't misunderstand me. The pro-prop 8 people are wrong too. There's no way that two men getting married is going to diminish my marriage in any way.
What I think people should realize it that this is a gender issue. Men can marry women, but women can't. Therefore, men have a right that women don't have. This is illegal according to Civil Rights Act of 1964!
Would someone please explain to me what this "tax break" is that everyone keeps talking about? Is this a california thing? I'm married and I don't get any kind of tax break.
Now, until 2001, there was a Marriage Tax Penalty, and some legislation has been passed that tries to mitigate it. This does make it possible for a married couple of disparate incomes to pay less taxes than if they filed seperately. But most of you are complaining about situations where two people make comparable incomes.
The gay marriage debate is not about tax-breaks. Its about well-defined rights to decision making in emergencies, and shared property, and government supported stability.
I, too, had some part-time contract work fall into my lap. I agree with my AC parent that it can seriously kill your personal time, but if thats not a problem I encourage you to go for it.
What you have described as your goal is exactly what I've done. I maintain my day-job in order to keep benefits, and I work a couple hours every evening to supplement. My day-job currently pays around $44/hr and the supplemental is paying $62.50/hr. Its nice to have, and I could fall back on it for more money if I were to get caught up in some lay-offs at my day-job. I've actually found that this added security has made me a little more bold in my career decisions -- which has paid off for me.
Unfortunately, I don't really have good advice for you regarding how to get started. Mine sort of fell in my lap, coming from a friend of a friend. I guess my best advice is to network! network! network!
My RAM is maxed out at 1 gig. Its my understanding that this is as much as my mobo can handle. And seriously -- upgrade my RAM, or use Firefox instead of Chrome. That's a no-brainer.
I don't care if it is only 512K. If every app I install creates a 512K service to run in the background, my resources slowly vanish.
Several people are saying I should kill the process or disable it. I didn't see anywhere in Chrome's settings to disable it. And I refuse to be required to go kill a process or turn off a service every time I reboot. Not only that, but it kept coming back when I did so.
I run at least a half dozen softwares that check for updates whenever I fire them up. They do not require long-running background processes.
The "Updater" killed it for me. I downloaded/installed Chrome, browsed a little and thought 'ooh isn't this neat.' Then, I killed it and fired up a video game. It was slower. I looked in my Task Manager and there's GoogleUpdater running. I uninstalled Chrome and never looked back.
I really don't care if they want to run an updater when I'm using Chrome. But I don't want software installing stupid stuff to run in the background when the software isn't being used. Its why I hate iTunes and Tivo Desktop. I'm even a little annoyed at Sun (Java Updater).
My machine is over 5 years old. I don't have the resources to allow every new piece of software to run some updater in the background, nor do I have the resources to go out and by a new machine right now.
I don't think this is a case of "bending the law". The piece of sh^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H defendant set up an account in direct violation of the terms of service. The TOS clearly state that you are not allowed to access accounts on their machines in this way, yet she did. She therefore committed an unauthorized access.
This is like arresting Al Capone for Tax Evasion. He did terrible things and everyone knew it. He was smart enough to cover his tracks, so it was impossible to convict him of these things. So, they went after him for something they could prove. In the end, jail is jail.
I would like to respectfully disagree. There is a lot to say for employees who see it as a paycheck rather than a passion. People who are passionate about the work -- especially older IT guys -- tend to be extremely opinionated. These people take it personally when PHBs decide to do things "the wrong way" (meaning a way different than their own). These people tend to be very hard to get along with in the work-place and they like to sit around lecturing their colleagues on how things would be so much better if they could only have their way.
When someone asks me if I'll do something that I think is stupid or wrong-headed, I just shrug and say, "Hey, I get paid by the hour."
Hunters work individually within a group, Gatherers work as a group within a group.
I'm sure this is being quoted from somewhere, and makes sense when explained. However, at first glance, it makes no sense to me. When hunters are a group, they coordinate and work as a team. It doesn't matter if you're talking about rednecks with shotguns or prides of lions. Group-Hunters attempt to encircle their prey, and trap them so that they cannot escape. Gatherers, on the other hand, say "Lets gather here." and then they spread out, each working independently so that the group covers more ground.
Lone hunters are different. But then they don't work individually within a group either.
Actually, according to the school's own website, "Due to a configuration error, this file was not completely secured from student password access after being moved to a new server." This implies that the kid could have done it with his own account.
I've worked places that didn't require tests, and I was surrounded by bumbling idiots. I've worked places that did require tests, and *most* of the developers are extremely competent. I'd much rather work with competent developers.
On the other hand, I don't think a lot of the common tests are very accurate. At a previous job, they asked all of the developers to take tests so that they could focus their in-house training. I took a test on SQL, and over 50% of the questions were about database server administration. While I agree that the two are related, I know how to write an effecient stored procedure -- not how to configure the memory usage on a particular flavor of SQL Server on a particular OS.
Similarly, I took a VB.NET test for my current position. I'd used VB 6.0 (ugh!) and C# (.NET), but never VB.NET. I scored in the "98th percentile".
So, while I think the tests themselves are not that accurate, they do tend to seperate the wheat from the chaff.
Really? The Indiana Canine Assistant & Adolescent Network did all that to your company? You should have taken your dispute to ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) instead...

"He"? Who? It was Dubyah that screwed up Katrina. This is a Franklin County Circuit Court Judge, and the Kentucky's Governor Beshear (a Democrat).
Did you even read the article?!?
Of course not! This is Slashdot!

Just be glad she'll never have to live through the horror of the Greater Psychic Wars of 2034-2036.
While I generally come down on the side of pirates in this debate, I must disagree. Pirate chicks are hot.
What do you mean? Of course its a chick...I mean look at her.
Wait a minute...oh...nevermind...
