    I would not expect many non-minor roads round here to last 30 years without resufacing, simply due to quantity of traffic. But then, I suppose the UK is a little more densely populated.

    So explain the recent Ryanair 737 that had bird-strike-induced flameouts the other month. That was already on landing approach, and whilst it landed moreorless on the runway, one MLG collapsed as it came in very hard. The airframe has now been written off.

    I'd disagree. Your average person has much more ability to defend himself from the above murderous kidnapper.

    Also, a fairer comparison would be kittens vs children (seeing as kittens are the infants of the species)...

    UK examples: Docklands Light Railway. The old Post Office underground (closed years ago). The London Underground, mostly - pretty much the driver presses a button to close the doors and another button to go, and then grabs a newspaper.

    Also: Offices and stores are built against future profits from their existence. Schools are a somewhat special case, as are prisons: they do not pay for themselves.

    How much will it cost to put him behind bars for, as you said, a few years? A hell of a lot more than what he stole from you. You, and other taxpayers, are paying for that.

    Well treated slaves were compensated with shelter and food and care for the work they performed. The purpose of money when exchanged for your work is to exchange for food, shelter, and so forth. There's less difference than many suggest.

    Not saying it's good, though.

    You have to love the complete misunderstanding of Google's explanation of blank areas. Google says "The lines are where the boat scanned, the gaps are where it didn't". The Sun says "Google can't explain the gaps".

    Here, less pre-tax pay never means more post-tax pay; it's impossible. Tax is paid at higher rates only on the portion of your pay that is within the bracket for that rate. The rest is taxed at the same lower rate it would be if that was all you earned.
