I find these types of surveys useless. I've been running on the same install of winxp for the last two years. I've had no serious viruse and a little bit of malware. I don't find that the system runs any slower then it did the first day, although I'm sure it is, and I would give winXP, from my experience, a B. Having said that. My friends, who incidentally are in the same computer program as me and thus have the same technical know how, are constantly complaining about windows, how slow and crappy it is. I quite frankly don't know what their problem is. So saying that M$ should recieve a C is pointless, because if they asked people like me about it instead of people like my friends then they would do better then a C.

I sometimes wonder, is the government really getting more nosy or are we all just becoming a bunch of whiners. I may be wrong but it seems like everyone is complaining about this and that; taxes too high, I'm not getting enough for my children, the government is out to get me, my rights are being violated, I can't fill up my V8 Hemi powered SUV because gas is too expensive. It seems like my parents generation didnt complain as much and didnt expect as many handouts. They bought what they could afford and they didn't take their privacy soo seriously. Any thoughts.

Funny that you mention the officer example. I've been working in the military for a few years now so I know exaclty what you mean; I'm getting out to pursue a software engineering career. I'm applying the same approach to my software career. My goal is to be a system analyst aka project manager (software version of officer i guess) but I'm starting as a coder. I think if I'm a good coder and I've worked in the 'shit' I'll make a good PM because I'll know what people on my team are going through.

I think another part of finding good work is to keep looking for it all the time, even when you already have a job. Dont settle for average and pick jobs that will advance your career. When I was looking for my job I considered the pay but I also considered how much more attractive I will become to a potential employer after I'm done this job. I dont think that in this industry you can remain stagnent with your skills becuase they will either change or be outsourced.

I agree with you 100% on this one. I'm from Canada and I dont think that we have the same problem with outsourcing here, I'm on coop right now making 20/hr, but I can see all this is going to back-fire. One day the US will realize that it is better/cheaper to actually have good code written locally. Just cause someone charges less per hour doesnt necessarily mean its going to cost less, bottom line that is.

That is true; however like i said it is easier to catch/prevent these problems if the company doing the outsourcing is close by and not half way across the world. Also from what I recall the article mentioned that the amount of these transgressions was much higher then normal.

I dont know how truth there is to this but I remember reading a while ago that companies where having problems with outsourcing. Projects where late, missing requirements and so on. Maybe this increase in employment is a reflection on the companies realizing that it is better to have local companies do the work? If you have to outsource part of your project to a company that is say next door or on the same block it is alot easier to keep tabs on what is going on and on making changes.

I'm not sure if either of these guys runs their own charity or gives to an existing one but I don't think that the magnitude of the amount should be a real gauge. Whoevers money makes the most difference at ground level is what should be compared. If person A gives 1 million and only 200,000 gets to the ground becuase of overhead, well that to me is crap because most of the money is going to people who don't need it. In terms of the hero question; id see someone more heroic who would give 1000 dollars when they only have 2000 as opposed to someone giving 30 million who has 30 billion. So i'd have to say that neither of them are heros and that their donations are just for good PR.

I can see how support staff make up the bulk of the cost but you have to realize that once they send this thing up into space it has to work; there is no warranty. If things aren't quadruple checked and all the scenarious played out you may end up loosing the whole project. I'm not a big fan of spending so much money on things such as these (there are worse like the war in Iraq), especially with 10's of thousands of people dying of starvation everyday, but if we're gonna do it we have to do it right.

The best thing about this is that if there is a lecture that is absolutely boring or covers things I aready know I can work on labs. This is a great time saver for me because I don't end up wasting time listening to useless lectures.

Just like with everything in software there is going to be a work-around found; unfortunately the average person is most likely not going to know how to use this work-around. So to summarize: paying public is getting punished while people who download music illegally will continue to do so. I am looking forward to the day when all bands publish their own music online. It doesn't take much money to do this, even if the band isn't computer savy you can hire a computer science student to do it for you. Hell I'll do it for you :-).

Myself and my roomate, more my roomate, are planning on building one of these. This summer he saw the solar power race that goes from Texas to Calgary (not to certain if end-points are correct). I'm not sure if this race is of the same caliber but he saw so many things on those cars that made his hair stand on end ie: why would you use something so heavy? why is the car so far off the ground? Why would you spend so much money on X if you can do it with anohter cheaper material? Basically he saw alot of noobish ideas, isn't this built by university students who are supervised by a prof? The plan right now is to build a solar power car for personal use, so no rules just maximum efficiency, with the idea of entering one of these competitions a few years from now. My question is to those at slashdot that have been involved with these races in the past: are the rules really limiting ingenuity or is it poor design? I know someone was comparing the rules to F1 rules which I think suck. If the rules are the problem then I think I should start planning my own race :-).

I know of several people below the age of 18 who have done this. I think that it is more important that children/kids/teens be taught right from wrong etc... instead of banning them from violent games. Kids will always want to try something especially if it is forbidden.

Reading over this thread has made me become even more uncertain about my education. I am taking a Computer System Technologist Program at a Collage which transfers to 3rd year of Software engineering at a university. People in the industry have given me mixed opinions on whether getting my Software Engineering Degree is worthwhile; for example if I spend the 2 years it would take me to get my degree programming at a company will I be better off? I used to be in a science program, before I decided to go into computers, so I do understand the arguments for having a broad theoretical background, but I don't want to invent the next Java or C++, I want to solve real world problems. So, I understand his frustration because I share it as well. I know a few people that have degrees but I am astounded as to how narrow minded these people are. Real-life world experience has made me a more rounded individual not theoretical classes.
