As far as I know, CSS is completely optional. I am not 100% sure on this point, but pretty close. Thus, you can make a DVD with just straight MPEG2 system-streams and it will play fine on any player.
I know for SURE that region coding is optional. All you do is have the region code be at zero.... actually, just forget about it. TOTALLY FORGET about it. It only really applies if you're using CSS to scramble the content; otherwise, no need to unscramble it.
Macrovision is something that is done in the player hardware, it has nothing to do with the bits on the disk. Thus..... to sum it up.... all you need, to make a DVD, is the ability to create MPEG2 system streams, put them in the proper VOB files, and make a few other files of which I don't really know how they work. Then, just slap it all into a gigantic UDF filesystem, and burn.
As for the burning side.... well, that's another matter. Someone else can answer that bit.
The person who found out the password couldn't even use it him/herself. They're not in the wheel group. Therefore, telling it to others as well wouldn't help them, either.
Now, if what he was really talking about was an admin giving the password to a user AND adding them to wheel..... well then, the admin wouldn't have given the clueless person the password in the first place if they didn't want to.
I wake up (or did I?), head over to slashdot, and see THIS, and I think.... damn this is a bad dream! But then I realize that I actually AM awake. Well folks, this is REALLY ****** ironic because (within past 2 days) I _JUST_ finished finding a copy of Streambox VCR.... glad I did it now! And just so all of you can have it, click the link in my.sig and look in the appropriate directory.... NOTE THAT I HAVE NOT TESTED THE FILES YET FOR WORKING STATUS/VIRUSES/WHATEVER. I got them from some FTP site in.ru....
Anyways, download and mirror, y'all know the drill.
"Many of the Comments make the assertion that the content owners will encrypt digital works and refuse to allow decryption in order to prevent fair use and/or to impose unreasonable terms on those wanting to make authorized use of the copyrighted work. Quite apart from the irrelevance of that contention to this inquiry, it is without basis. Certainly today, when a work is made available in digital format (and assuming for purposes of the discussion that that the work is not available in analog format), the distributor of that work is not only willing but eager to have the work decrypted by consumers for viewing and/or listening."
Okay, they say that accusations of taking fair use away are bunk, then say that they're happy to have consumers do what? Not fairly use the works, but DECRYPT FOR VIEWING. Can you say, sidestepping the issue?
"It is true that the technological protection created, for example, for DVD requires for access to the copyrighted work that it be played on a licensed player. This is a function of the state of today's technology. We are not yet at the point where a "unilateral" technical protection can be inserted in, for example, a DVD that would permit access only with the authority of the copyright owner."
So what they REALLY want is something that will call up big mommy whenever it is tried to be played, and get permission. NO ****ING WAY!
Say you have this car you want to find out about, like what's under the hood and all, but the entire thing is encased in a big piece of metal...
... So, you get two cars, and you smash them together at REALLY high energies (for a single car to have). At some point, you will crack the casing, and get a glimpse of the car inside, and see all of the parts subsequently flying out. Then, you have to get the trajectories of all of these little particles, project them backwards, and write an engine manual. Not exactly easy:-)
Now, for the Higgs boson, it's kind of like trying to open the trunk and look at the spare tire intact... when the cars are colliding head-on. It will take more energy for the trunk to spontaneously open, and the spare tire to come out intact... well, bad analogy, but you get the picture, sorta!
Now, while this may be a noble thing for Sega to try out for once...
Man, it's such a weird concept that I can't say whether I like it or not yet. I mean, those guys should be PUNISHED for bad behavior, but on the other hand, if they SIGN A LEGAL DOC saying they won't do it again...
Well, first off, as one person pointed out, it IS kind of a bad precedent. What Sega then needs to be sure and do is not give this treatment to everybody, and only give it at their discression. Yeah. That makes more sense.
Whatever Sega wants to try to stop the pirates, hey! A first try of something new is always worth a shot. Novel concepts included.
Yeah, I know, I was just trying to remember the good ole' days and hoping someone else (*cough* a moderator *cough*) would too and would give me some mod points. Oh well!
Have a nice day, and be sure to download some stuff from the link below:-)
Starting with version 0.85, Licq has this functionality built-in. It's really nice, just open up a secure channel via Diffie-Helman by clicking a button, then talk.
Now, while this does not AUTHENTICATE that the person you're talking to is who you think, it at least screws up Echelon, so it's still good:-)

Wow! Just downloaded GPG last night.
And I have this to say about the command-line syntax: although it didn't say it anywhere, specifying the full and LOGICAL names for operations makes it so that there's much less chance of a screw-up. I could tell this right off just by looking at gpg --help. In a security application most of all, this is quite critical, and most of us cmd-ln usrs are used to typing stuff fast, and sometimes making mistakes... well, GPG makes you verify just what you're doing before you do it. A big plus in my book!
Now pretty soon we won't have to worry about those Killer (Golden) Orbs anymore!
(If you don't know what I'm talking about, go find the article about Socket A coolers that Don't Kill.)
(You know how you come up with a good quip hours after a fight? It's kinda like me, I come up with a good post HOURS after moderators are looking anymore... Sigh.)
Sure, privacy realistically died a while back, such with mail-order, credit cards, Radio Shack, and the like. BUT that doesn't mean the people here who are clamoring for more privacy ONLINE should just shut up! I think there are a few reasons why this is coming up now.
1. Internet business is coming to the forefront of the media, ESPECIALLY HERE. Look at how many YRO articles are about privacy policies.....
2. Much of the readership here is younger (like me) and so we're just now realizing the EXTENT to which privacy has gotten shot to heck.
3. They're clamoring for better privacy ONLINE because they see that that is starting to become a problem.
4. Maybe they should try for more privacy in the real world too... it's just harder sometimes to do this.
So anyways, don't slap them down just because they want more ONLINE privacy while not looking at the offline side of it...
And on a personal note, what really irks me is the CHANGING of the policy, and having that be retroactive on all of the people who have given personal details before. That's just WRONG.
I don't really care too much if NVidia has some wonderful drivers but does not open them up... it's not like I need top-notch performance. Thus, the reason I choose 3Dfx over NVidia is because 3Dfx tells you HOW TO USE THE HARDWARE in the most sensical way, command registers and such. Correct me if I'm wrong, but NVidia does not.
Now, for a lot of people, it is just fine for them to trust the company to come out with good drivers. (Even when it's both closed hardware AND closed software.) But me... no, I'd rather still be able to use my 3Dfx card in 3 years when it's not supported by the company any more, even with the latest OS and X and whatever. Having the specs on HOW TO BE ABLE TO _USE_ YOUR OWN HARDWARE is most valuable to me.
This is just my opinion, I'm not saying it should be everyone's. I'm just stating it, in hopes that it is interesting to others.
Remember the article about Intel working on a serial protocol for displays, to replace AGP... and everything else they're trying to make serial...
While in theory it does reduce complexity, there is a cost, as this article points out. And when you get down to it, RDRAM fits exactly into this category of "serial protocol"... basically it's making it go four times as fast down a pipe four times as narrow! Now, while Intel may be having second thoughts about this (internally of course), it still seems like another one of the serial protocols they're trying to promote, for better or worse.
... is that in such lists as the bugs.4bsd, I can understand what's going on with their operating system, 20 years later, having never touched that original code (I think). THIS is one of the beauties of UNIX.
