You know that, right? They just had their broadcasting permit revoked, which means they will be continuing on cable and satelite tv. They we're just not permitted to go on transmitting on the airwaves, and i would guess that any tv channel that propagated for a cloody coup in the US would quickly get stopped too. There are regulations you know.
"Linux throws off very little cash; much of the revenue that comes from it is tied to services and hardware, and these services are generally, though not always, discounted below what they would be for a "proprietary" product."
Hmm, i would say that linux and OSS results in plenty o' cash. I have thus far deployed heaps of customized CMS website solutions on LAMP servers, enough to allow me to keep studying for a masters degree in social work, without having to resort to getting one single dollar of student loan. 4 years of studies without debt, thank you OSS, thank you Linux!
Thats why it's good to have a yearly 5 week vacation. (we have that in sweden)
Talk it through with some friends so you sync the most vacation time possible, then sleep til noon, cuddle with the fiancee and barbeque in the afternoon, then game all night, rince and repeat for 5 weeks=Everyone satisfied. There's time for gaming, unless you're into the career thingy, but who'd wanna jump into a threadmill if it denies you time to cuddle with ones fiancee or play games?
You work to support your quality time, not the other way around. Currently i also get some quality gaming time since i commute by train and own a DS.
I think it's curious when the burden of proof gets shifted back to the evolutionism, it's not like it's the evo theory that doesn't hold. I'm thinking in terms of popper and falsification here. If you cannot prove the theory invalid, then it cannot be considered scientific. Creationism is one "theory" that routes past all proof towards it's invalidity by saying "it's in the book", hardly scientific.
You've tried war, you've tried sanctions, lets look at what works: How didya open up china and cause them to at least restrain their worst crazy ideas?
Simple:Trade. Not a lifting of sanctions or anything half assed like that, start full scaled trade with them, let them buy and sell all the goods they want, and profit off it too, the populace will never get the strenght required if they have to scavenge for food. it's all about the the phases of need, first you eat, then you think, and then you act. If you were to warm up on em and embrace them into trade, you'll have a development much like china and vietnam, where the party might still be strong but it's desperation wears off and the population is better off.
Right, i've watched quite some american news programs, most prominently fox news and cnn. I saw them while i was in havana, i came down with a flu due to the over effective air conditioner so i had nothing better to do than watch american tv (Since i cannot speak/read spanish cuban tv wasn't my cup of tea so to speak)...And i got the impression that it was like a circumcised male organ. It was free, but cut:) The news reported on basically anything, as long as it was kept under 2 minutes or so. And thats a problem in itself, noone gets to elaborate fully, explain properly, problematize or explore a subject. Just "Ablabla blala freedom, bla terrorism bla, we'll be right back after these messages"....After a while it wasn't so enlightening, it felt repeating...I kept asking my gf when the real programs starts, surely these are just trailers or appetizers? But they weren't, i'd have to suffer from ADHD or some attention deficiency to keep up with reporting that severed and cut-up.
Postmoderninsm: Going to extreme lengths to yawn and remain aloof, becaue as you know what said is their POV, and one angle. Ti's so much grander looking at stuff from thousands of viewpoints at once and never really understanding or feeling connected to one theory or viewpoint.
Does it show i hate postmodernism? Hope so, DOWN WITH THE POSTMODERNISM NIHLIST BASTAGE ASSHATS!
In the beginning, there was fewer game devs, the skills was not as common, nowadays there's schools that teach just what you need to code games. Thus, employers have a larger assortment to choose from and thus can place higher demands on the employee. As the company wants to increase it's profits it works to improve the profit margin by increasing productivity, and the typical company hive mind and the company execs usually does just this by introducing elements of taylorism or fordism and thus the industrial mode of production has entered the workplace and the positive workplace atmosphere dissapears and in the long run the innovation and creativity. I do so understand why it's hard to produce cool and entertaining games in a white collar industrial factory.
what happened to strange and original concepts, anyone remember midwinter and midwinter2:Flames of freedom on the amiga, or Covert action?
it's all been replaced by twitch 1st person shooters or incredibly huge rpgs that none have the time to finish.
Just give my brain some exercise damn it...gawd, cant stand waiting til the next Phoenix wright is out on the DS...good games are far between.
I just thought i'd add that i'm a long time adventure gamer, finished off most of the old lucasarts games and sierra classics, and i actually find that phoenix wright on the ds has some of that old magic....it's a bit short, but well worth it.
as my services are in demand (i make nice dynamic webpages) i had the choice of:
1.Working without paying taxes
2.Registering a business, to be able to pay taxes.
Risk? naw, i just sit down, use my "means of production", that is, an array of open source cms-systems, gimp, mysql. That aint much of a risk, thats using time i would have spent playing supertux or whatnot, having fun in front of the computer, but in a another manner.
I use most of the money thats left after taxes to finance webspace and bandwidth for different leftist organisations and campaigns.
I actually dont give a F about earning more money than i need for living, with an ample supply of coffee. There is such a thing as working for the pride of having made a good job, or working for a cause, rather than for ones own profit. I take pride in designing webpages well, and being attentative to detail in customizing them, and i like being able to contribute most of the gains towards a common goal.
The way it works is that if a company wants me to do a webpage, i charge good, and make a nice webpage, if a leftist/union/socialist/communist/syndicalist organisation asks me, i do it for free and give free hosting.(As long as i'm able to).
And believe it or not, i'm not the only idealist type around either.
Monopolies dont happen, in an ideal capitalist world...Which, as much as a 100% pure communist society, is what i would call a pipe dream. In some regions of eu, farm produce is still being destroyed. But i notice a contradiction, you expect goverment to solve monopoly situations, and at the same time you critizise (sp?) the goverment intervention in farming.
So you dont see a monopolist centralization trend in many areas? To increase profit margins, you start with upping effiency and the production process, first by tech innovation in most cases, then by centralizing and getting the benefits of high volume production, then it's time to have a go at the benefits and salaries....The car industry being a good example of that, at least here they've started cutting benefits and salaries, demanding longer hrs etc. Monopolies happen everywhere, thats the nature of competition, you strive to be number one and to have as large market share as possible, preferably 100%, and every company that doesn't strive towards that goal is not maximizing shareholder value. All this while overproduction crisis occasionally shock the economy.
The business and stockmarket discussion could be a bit scrambled due to language issues, the word for business can be used in my language for both stock trading and making business deals, landing contracts and whatnot.
But it doesn't bother you at all, that the stock market has very little connection to whats actually being produced and the value of the physical capital? (manufacturing plants etc)...A can affect B, but not by any rules or system that B can affect? A industry can produce ever so much, but if the stock market doesn't find it increasing it's profit fast enough, it's punished.
Now, keynesian economics (as opposed to neoclassical)is a bigger patch on the capitalist system, but still not more than a patch. I'm not an economist, never tried portraying myself as one, i'm a mere geek, but i see some pretty nasty bugs in capitalism so to speak.
I'm even worse than that..I'm a cynic, a commie, an union member and part time entrepreneur....which gives me somewhat of an insight as to how capitalists work. The capitalist that says he's against monopoly is either 1.In a monopolized business and hurting from it. or 2.Economically independant, wealthy beyond giving a F. And hell yes Capitalists makes their lucre off the work of others, thats the way it works...The goal of entrepreneurship is to facilitate a life beyond having to work, just having the capital work for you. At first they try to increase the profit margin by improving production, then it's usually by degrading work conditions or salary, dont try to say you haven't seen it?
Thats the privilege of being in control of the means of production. If you dont think it's sick, consider the fact that the EU and US farmers overproduce, and has to destroy produce to keep the prices sound, while people are starving elsewhere. And the business world and stock market at large? One big heaping sham...None of the companies are valued on the merit of their produce or owned capital (at best they're only factors, at worst play no part at all)...It's about "buzz", marketing, "trends", hype, gaming the stock market to cut out cents...Not about producing anything of value or anything sustainable.
(Excuse my bad english btw, i'm not a native english speaker)
Capitalism, and it's players strive (conscious or subconsciously) towards monopoly. When monopoly has been achieved prices rocket, when prices rocket people cannot afford their merchandise or services, when people cannot afford things (but more and more is produced more and more efficiently) there will be discontent people.....They're not giving away anything, they are patching their flawed system to be able to keep going. The world as a whole is richer than ever, and the gaps are big and not exacly diminishing...unless you count it in a very absolute manner, which is flawed. I truly believe he's doing it out of philantropic reasons, not many humans can stand watching endless suffering, even fewer humans can stand the thought of being part of the cause for it. Colour me cynic.
There seems to be heaps and heaps of 3d shooters, stealth games and up until recently, rts games.
What happened to the games that require analysis, strategy and brains?
GalCiv is a golden exception, generally there isn't many good 4x games nowadays.
Anyone remember sid meiers Covert action? That was a brilliant game, decipher stuff, figure out how terrorist/international crime networks are operated...thats one good example of a thinking game....we need more of it, and as the young gamers of yesterday gets older (i started gaming on my c64, some 21 years ago) one would think there was a big market for intelligent, mature games....hell, many games back then required more thinking than the current crop....remember "president is missing" by cosmi.
The only worthwhile game i've played recently was Phoenix wright, ace attourney....on my ds....
I'm in my country's equivalent to IWW http://www.iww.org/...Being a wobbly techie type works absolutely fine...even better, you can stay in the "one big union" even if you change jobs or assignments..i get legal help (and supply some as i go along and learn labour law), i get camaraderie, and i get to meet'n chat with all sorts of people of all classes and professions, hell it even helped me get hints in employment opportunities.
Nothing is stopping you from joining the union
I realise i sound like a union-bot right about now, but it's that good, noone should stand alone, no matter their profession.
But i still feel like what we unionized people with plenty o' hair on the chest and lower regions call a "dirty little scab". I dont like the feeling, hope i one day will get rid of it...but darn sometimes you just have to listen to Edit piaf - je ne regrette rie.mp3
if anyone asks for help unf*cking their system, i offer an linux installation (usually ubuntu)....i then backup all their docs using a 250gb portable usb drive, install a linux system (while i drink coffee)....configure their mail, set up a firewall, dump all docs back and presto, they are virus/spyware free...and they are NOT on the sudoers list, if they want to make significant changes to the system as a whole (which they dont need, nobody needs that if everything is set up right) they get to call me, and i do it remotely.
If they want windows support, they gotta call ms, that is if they have a legit copy, which they dont, most of the time.
I understand it alright, but i make a point out of answering corp-lingo in a most abrupt manner:
Management type: Well we most definatly have to consider being more on and keeping proactive, to be ready for a paradigm shift in the flow of how..
Me:Mm..yes? Written work order please...state assignment and deadline.
Might be because i'm a far lefty, but i really think they are closing in on Ron.L hubbard's wierdspeak..
Even if this is a april fools thing, and there WONT be an adult star wars movie, the idea does have merit in one way;
If you define adult movie as=Movie for adults, void of bullshit, jar jar binks, cute fuzzy animals added to make it more child friendly, if you added a bit of grittyness, a heavier plot and even blood, then you might actually have a adult science fiction movie, something that hasn't been done in a good way in a long time, and i'm not counting I Robot.
"Independant" organisations set up banks of text to copy&paste to create the impression of not being affiliated, political activists of both sides of the spectrum + people who wants to make money copy & paste.

Of course, it will pollute the blogosphere (yuck buzzword), as if it wasn't polluted enough with spamblogs.
There are two sides of this for sure...This will make astroturfing quite simple.
