Painkillers for cavity drilling? Holy shit you spoiled little western brats! - In Soviet Russia (old jokes aside I have grown while there was still soviet union ) I had my teeth drilled about a dozen times without any painkillers (as well as many other kids like me ) . Not exactly pleasant experience, but nothing you can't handle .
Tearing out the fingernail ( I had fingernail infection) on the other was a torture like experience -and for this I have no idea why they didnt use anesthesia (maybe to make soviet kids tough, but most probably due to usual economy and deficit of "non-strategic" supplies...)
- we already have a ton of them in anything from pda and cell phones to watches . What we need is wearable display, bigger than 20x20 pixels and usable for reading and surfing the web ( my blackberry display barely qualifies for reading simple emails, forget the web!).And after that we need normal input , and,no, voice recognition won't cut it . I need something usable I said - imagine even if you had perfect voice recognition but had to say every action you need perform open window->open directory ->open file ->edit at 00048h all clear out and loud and see how productive you gonna editing a trivial config file.
Bad logic here. According to you NRA defends right to carry concealed weapons precisely for the reason they are concealed and there is no way for criminal to know it. - Not everybody can/will carry weapon if law alowed it. So criminals would just pick those unarmed .
Well I am not an expert in AI not in any way,but I am interested in the subject and that is how I understand it :
NNs are universal systems which incorporate function(transformation from F(t)->Y(t)) , learning(ability to adjust (y'(t) till ti resemebles desired y(t) ) and memory -keeping actuall way to transform f(t) to desired y(t). Representation is indvidual weigths in nodes and their interconnections (thats it you copy the weights and topology and activation functions and thats basically the concept) .
Example:
Lets say we got the network which recognizes colors (kohonens SOMs are good for that) - this is concept of colors . Lets get another network which recognizes geometry objects and spatial distance (front/behind etc) - thats our spatial awareness . Now lets plug those 2 into aibo and feed them data which represents colored geometrical objects , on the output we get exactly what color, what type of object and where it is located. -Now you can plug those into other NNs (for some higher levels classification) or just put into simple alorigthm(case red ball grab, case blue brick ignore -etc) and what you want with data.
Power of NN is that they are classifiers of data. In normal way (linear algorithms) it is very hard to classify wide range of data .
Company I work for for example asks that every new config we buy for research dept is benchmarked against set of in house application.Every % matters for statistical apps which may run several days -That was exactly reason we jumped intel's ship 3 years ago (they suck hardcore at FP) .
There is market for performing CPU,fact that there is billions of morons out there who waste/do not need computing power changes nothing.
While if benches are true (but so far I saw anandtech woodcrest bench rigged in favor on intel - they used motherboard without NUMA support for AMD which crippled opteron's bandwidth ) it will be definitely a hit to AMD.
Now as of 65 nm vs 90nm - it means that AMD has potential to increase their current chips stats, while intel already exhausted it (45 nm is nowhere near),combined with K8L it may as well bring them 40-60 % performance increase over their current 90nm K8 . Just jump to superior technology gives performance increase and less power consumption. Intel already jumped. AMD will in q4 2006. So I think Conroe will be superior either till q4 2006 ( 65 nm) either till q1 2007 (K8L on 65 nm).
Hate to nitpick , but if you use vb style variable declaration, then "==" makes no sense (as vb just uses "=" operator for assigment and for comparison as well). IT's C like languages which use "==" for equality check.
Meal part is bogus I eat in front of my PC since I got one.I do it at work,at home - whether I am gaming or not . Simply because I cant stand just sitting and staring at my food , if I dont have a PC I read book/newspaper. And I know many people do the same (substitute PC for TV for some),regardless of their addiction .
Or you can just have administrative Policy of keeping anything critical/work related on file server. And let user use their local drive for their own crap ( ituens songs, pictures etc etc).
My users are aware that anyything on thier local drive is their own headache as far as backups are concerned. And if I find mp3 on file server they will be gone.-Works pretty well.
Well dont you see it looks now like IQ test - moving from image recognition area to human knowledge domain . Given that only recently computer visios was hard problem , turing-test-like problem wont be real problems for long . Eventually programs will perform better or equal in every imaginative test we can make .
Wow you guys dont see that if the game has so much of downtime that you have time to read slashdot or play another game it is not really a game but a timesink ? Very pointless at that.
WTF are you guys serious? How the heck you "skip count" something like 3486x32432 ????? Granted I got all my education in Russia (soviet union jokes aside) and at the time I was in junior school there was no calculators in class , but even on my entrance college exams we werent allowed to use calculator on math exam (not like they were required - most things were algebra and basic calculus , and unless you screwed somewher up all the numbers were easily calculatd in the head , in fact it was a sign of a screw up if you ended up doing some really crazy numbers - algebraic transformation and equation solving ability was important on exam , not elementary arithmetics with coefficents)
HAve you tried this? IT says "this update cannot be uninstalled" and there is no "remove" button.Funny that you can uninstall all other security hotfixes but this genuine advantage/notification cannot be .
How much support staff/infrastructure is needed for 4 F15 you think? And the cost of 4 f15 themselves + trained pilots.Predator is a bargain today and will be only more cost effective in the future ( when there is more automation and less dumb humans wasting resources).
Fun fun times:) I was quitting and coming back, each time though come back was shorter and shorter. I think most of the fun times were in the beta and first few months . Broken client, broken servers and fubared game mechanics .
You forgot to add 'make payment' step. And also "limited selection from riaa/mpaa"- whatever is decided kosher for online distribution .
The only incentive to buy anything from stores like this for me is when I can see where my dollars go e.g. If I pay 10 dolars I want see how much of those 10 $ went to original producer of content (e.g. artist or programmer) and how much to piggybacking parasites (like riaa/mpaa/publishers) . Ideally I want to buy directly from producer, who distributes it through some good service which charges minimal fee, and creators compete on price points between themsleves , not a set in stone "$15.00 MSPR" prices set by riaa/mpaa cartel .
Dude we have 100 desktops, 25 servers, SAN , Disaster recovery site , shit load of buisness critical applications and only 2 admins. Plans for this half a year to add 10 more production servers (and DR for them ) , 3 more buisness critical applications and on top of that boss is fucking micromanager who drowns down productivity in endless meetings, which concentrate on uber important stuff like "how we name servers" . This is also financial shop where down time is not accepted and maintenace windows are scarce to get by.
You are freaking lucky out there.
I would say desire for power, control and knowledge is necessary . Think about you design a benevolent goody-two shoes AI, who "does no evil' how long will it fare vs. competition AI which will be ruthless , focused on gaining more knowledge, power and control without taking into account any fluffy stuff? -
The competing AI maybe not extreme from the start, but due to natural competition for resources only those with desire for power, control and knowledge will survive .
That's inevitable , because of "laws" of systems evolution .
I wish I wasnt throttled at 100kb/s or as they like to call it 1mbps (where that comes from is anyones guess...)
It comes froms a simple thing that networking stuff (and some other stuff) is traditionally measured in {kilo, mega, tera}bits per second while other stuff is in {kilo, mega, tera}bytes . 1 byte= 8 bit . So dont cry foul when you dont get 1 MByte/sec download speed when what is advertised is 1 Mbit/sec (roughly 0.125 MByte/sec)
It doesnt "magically" become self -aware. Strap 100 times more procesisng power doing yet another weather-partcile-whatever computational intesive taske and it still not be self-aware. It has to be specificaly designed and desgnated for this task. I havent heard any supercompturs used for doing anything AI specific yet . I am sure they will some day , but AI wont just emerge from paricle analyzer .
Heck even an average code monkey is stupid. He can remember how to follow templates , use crystal reports, use select_ from_where, do for loop and drag widgets in MSVC . But they do not understand anything which goes beyond repeating a few proven formulae's. Good engineering or design? -forget about it . Many of them cant even properly use the tools they supposedly were trained on (you know how to effectively use debuggers, profilers ).I knew quite a few ppl doing databases whose designs were absolutely atrocious - they never could grasp such concepts as normalization, consistence and good data modeling . About 90% programmers I met have no clue about object oriented design and architecture, yet they think they mastered it because they can grab an event from button press. Granted not all coders are that stupid , but many of them are, and those are professionals, who supposedly learnt CS in college , and has years of coding experience .
p.s. Same can be said about other IT ppl.Like network administrators. Many of them have no clue about operating systems , networks, software - they just know how to properly react to buzzwords . They are pavlov-trained how to use mmc applets, a few web interfaces , ping command and that's it . I met some who couldn't configure firewall even if their life depended on it - Anything which requires even slightest bit of knowledge they contract out - . And that's relatively good ones.Bad ones just ignore problems they are resistant to any new deployment/upgrade/maintenance for the fear of change till the network falls apart completely and/or stops fulfilling business needs.
Some smart ppl can do some macro coding, yet majority of them do incredibly stupid things (like pretending excel sheet is database and putting many thousands of rows in it , with lookups replacing select, resulting in macros which runs for hours and crashes every other time, while 2 dozen lines statement in SQL on a normal database does same job in 45 seconds )
And this article talks about average Joe programming, lol. They are completely lost when recycle bin is moved to different place on their desktop , or a menu item moved a few lines away. Jeez ppl need be realistic.
Crucial difference is though , unlike with Wikipedia, you can not choose what you see at any given time. Reading is also a lot faster way to get information then watching it on TV , accompained by slow monotonous voice and flashy videos. Add ads , jingles and other useless stuff to it and you see that TV is no contestant for internet.
p.s. BTW just recently I discovered google videos and watched a nice national geographic-like video about pacific islands. No ads , good quality , 2 hour of good educational video.
