This might sound to some like an oxymoron of epic dimensions, but then again, I bet you're not feeling the effects of this policy since you're not living in Norway.
The interesting thing about this policy, is that it actually have come to pass.
The magic sauce you ask? The secret is having a Minister of Government Administration and Reform, where the minister, Ms. Grande Røys have a Political Advisor that happens to be one http://no.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=J%C3%B8rund_Leknes, a card-carrying geek if there ever was one;
Top 10 finalist in Norwegian programming championship, elected replacement representative to the legislative assembly since 2001, Opensource advocate and also bronze finalist of 2v2 StarCraft championship in 2000. He's even on Facebook.
Did I mention he's probably younger than a lot of you guys, at 25?
Read this one over once more and cross out everything that would not be possible in the US, and you'll see.. Garbage In/Garbage Out. it holds true also for government (internet+tubes, anyone?).
RTFA!! This is a policy specifying what formats THE GOVERNMENT should use. If anything they should stay out of a format LOCKED TO A PARTICULAR VENDOR.
It's effecting a long overdue backtrack from the too tight integration with MS products that's been the case up until now. People may use Office all they want, they just DON'T HAVE TO anymore. If that doesn't sound free to you, then sire, you're a hopeless case
I'm not convinced of the moral high ground the Israelis claim. (They do not claim per se, but rather imply it with god-given lack of regard for the rest of the world.)Even if I'm not into the cause, it have bothered me. How is it possible to have so incredible weak PR strategies? This stuff is just what should be expected of the current situatuin though.. Yet another forced speedy advancement of doomsday weaponry.
Whenever this technology is ready for production, I for one will eagerly wish our new hive-based overlords welcome. Because they will come.
Incredibly stupid concept that involves mangling the CDDA audio standard thoroughly, causing multiple hardware players, and all software players except the on-disc software player (currently supporting recent Apple & Microft OS'es).
It has thoroughly alienated me from buying the physical, inconvenient, expensive, semi-legal licence to download a playback-compatible copy of the information contained therein ever again.
The fact that EMI have marketed and sold music CC-CDs in a form that's confusingly similar to regular CDs (okay, I bought one album by accident..) have thoroughly pissed me off.
For me to buy a CD, the company need to NOT be EMI, DRM is out of the question, and I have to genuinely LIKE the artist as well as the music.
For everything else there's a online music store's TOS that 'just works'.
Agree with parent, except for the silly rhyming part.
I've been there and heard heard students and researchers praise their (semi-permanent) place of residence up, up and away. It was particularly fun to hear the Dutch post-doc talking about how it seemed a way better deal to her (as a part-time working mom scientist) than the Netherlands.
Finland has got a great attitude toward scientific achievement (primary levels of education are some of the best in busines), and just plain _doing_ things with great force and enthusiasm.
It's basically Scandinavian, except for some of the stupidest parts found in other of the nordic countries.
When I want to know more about a wildly unfamiliar subject i do the search consisting of '[keyword] wiki', and usually get wikipedia articles at the top, closely followed with somewhat useful homepages of the same, further down the page.
87% of the time i just visit the first wikipedia entry to see if the article is any good.
Wikipedia is pretty okay on content, Google is still best on indexing. Can't see why I'd have to choose one or the other.
I find the idea of a whole suite of programs (i won't consider the 'OS' bit since it really makes no sense) that relies on web technology to be somewhat interesting.
If not only because my favorite browser have been putting alot of work into a crossplatform coding environment that seems promising (Opera Platform for cellphones, and Opera Widgets).
The whole idea of creating a quick'n'easy (most of the work are already done by the browser) crossplatform coding environment seems like a bad re-run of what java was supposed to be, but to me this seems like it got some more bounce to it, plus some of the bad bits left out.
Easy math:
Take the population of earth, subtract everybody who does NOT have DSL or faster. Subtract everybody that would prefer to stop somewhere for 3 minutes, instead of spending 3-5 hours waiting for download to finish.
There's still people enough to profit. Plenty!
The only thing I can't understand is why Apple should bother to spend money on Blockbuster (even on sale) when all they need is a power-charged vending machine.
Cringley's not on crack. But Apple should be onto Coke
If I recall correctly, as of 3 years ago when I was a junior in college, one windmill could power one house. A small house, at that. I don't think technology has improved substantially in the three years since.
It would have been helpful if you'd spent a few minutes with Google before posting. Wind turbines range in production capacity between 500kW and 6MW. For comparison, a 5MW wind turbine produces enough electric power for 1000 homes and that's after taking into account fluctuating wind conditions.
I suppose a 5kW wind turbine would be enough for one house. That's the eletrical production capacity of wind turbines back from 1890. That's right; wind turbines have been used to produce electricity since the late 1800s. They produced enough power back in 1890 to power a single house today.
I think the grand-parent rightfully manages to raise concern about the improvement rate of junior college curriculum..
Limitations are that these networks have som powerline quirks, you should have both adapters on the same cirquit, and still the speed is pretty slow compared to 1Gb cat5, but if you are so into speed, the extra work needed to strecth that cable isn't complainable.
It's just another way to keep the wireless less crowded, and still get away with fewer cables.
With some fancy printing technology, and some database-work, 40.000 subscribers were delivered a satelite photo of their own house as cover story, and several personalized ads inside.
Kinda creepy, but still refreshingly cutting edge, for a offline initiative..
From TFA: "We look for subsegments of Internet users who care about certain things," explains Breen Vogel. "We find them when they're online, we intercept their activities, and we start a relationship with them."
Fear not! Once the advertisers get the hang of it, there will probably start to pop up ads for tools to De-Personalize advertising here on Slashdot. (Ads from the trusty Tin-Foil Hat for those really hardcore paranoians out there, and softer stuff like AdAware SuperPlus for the discerning consumer).
On a side note; With some analyzing power spent on existing posts, it should be very easy to determine GullibleRating (TM) and TinFactor (Probably TM) of the individual account, and sell advertising space to confirmed (logged-in) users. Whenever this happens it's tinfoil time for me! (oh wait, i already HAVE
gmail.. )

".. i'm not paying for that OS."
Me neither!
I still hope that won't stop them from still supporting excellent drivers for my graphics card, though.

Great, no more worrying over network neutrality degrading any further, then! I'm packing my bags as we speak..
'x' won't make you rich, your customers will.. Decent nailing of a few good points people tend to forget.
Anybody'd be a fool not to take advantage of it, as long as the option is there.
(If that's too bad, then you'd better get busy making yourself a better bargain than those availble overseas.)

They sold me a .com for 10 years for $4.95 a year (couldn't resist it)
They really need to sell me lots of hosting for that deal to be sweet.
