There should be patent free open standards like IP that everyone can use and build on. What if google had to pay a fraction of a cent for every IP packet as royalty. Would it have taken off in it's infancy. Hell, would internet taken off ?

I am absolutely frustrated with the cable companies in my area. Be it comcast, RCN or WOW. First the charges are sky high, then the internet service is throttled. They keep pushing the phone service. If you have to get HD you have to 'rent' their DVR boxes. I dont need a DVR because I have a HTPC but I am still paying for it.

I have wondered what would it take to start a community cable service, which provides basic HD (OTA reception is bad) and basic cable. Internet service offloaded in bulk to a competing ISP. Has any one any experience in such project, any links on how one can achieve this ?

I know one has to get licenses from the local municipality for providing utility, besides the politics, what are the technical challenges. Is it even doable ??

Yes there is a shortage if IT workers. I started my consulting company two years after graduation (2004) make $200/hrs. The thing that I am most great full for are the compiler design, the distributed systems, the graph theory classes that I took in college. One has to understand computer science in depth. If you learn to use Windows server you skills will be obsolete in few years, if you learn how servers are built, you will be ready no matter what comes along.

My biggest gripe is people think they are know IT, after learning to type on a keyboard. Yes you can program by drag and drop, yes you can install a web server and create applications with that .net crap. But understand you are setting yourself to become obsolete in few years. There is a difference between a mechanical engineers and auto repair guy. Don't complain about engineering schools when all you want to become is a mechanic. Dont expect an engineer's salary when you are repairing cars.

FOSS franatics may scoff. Dont flame me if you use Flash or Java. It might not be kosher according to FOSS puritans, but it is a linux based commercial product. And there needs to be more of it. As far as I am concerned Real has redeemed it's sins by providing me a linux distribution. I openly admit that I am a fan. I am a fan because real sees value in linux support. Where is quicktime, iTunes, photoshop? Apple wont touch linux and I wont start about MS. Linux needs _some_ commercially successful products to gain a wider acceptance.

If a software is crap people will not use it, but it doesnot mean that their existance is a bane.

I have been to US, I am impressed with the environmental regulations and enforcement. The problem with the US is not quality but quantity. You guys consume petrol like fish drinks water. I stood by an expressway in Chicago and observed over 95% of the vehicles had single occupancy on a weekday. And approximately every fourth private vehicle is a SUV.
