  1. Registration in Wisconsin on Did You VoteOrNot.org? · · Score: 1

In Wisconsin, AFAIK, most polling places allow you to register at the polls the day of the election, usually just requiring two items as proof of residency.

However, I don't think that you receive any proof of registration. I wonder what happens in this case?

  2. The Mods must be Crazy on Philadelphia Considers Free Citywide Wireless Access · · Score: 1

I've been paging though the comments on this article, and nearly every comment that points out that this is not a free service (it's taxpayer-funded), or that taxpayers should do this privately, had been either ignored by the mods or given negative moderation, usually "redundant". One guy pointed out what this really is, communism, and he got modded to 0. By contrast, all the positive mods appear to be going to those who are saying what a great idea this would be.

Ok, I'm done talking. You can come for me now.

Damn. I was really hoping these would stick around. It would have been a great addition to my aspiring Car PC project. Time-shifting talk radio over XM would have been neat.

As far as I was concerned, devices like this were one the major reasons to subscribe to XM instead of Sirius.

  6. My catch-all spam control method on Is A Catch-All Address Worth The Spam? · · Score: 3, Informative

I own the domain of my last name, for example jones.com. Most spammers guess that a catchall will be placed upon that root domain. However, I create an MX record for my full name, john.jones.com, and then do a catchall of (at)john.jones.com pointing to my account. Spammers seem less aware (zero guesses so far) of MX domains. Then, wherever I have to give out my email address for a registration, I give a "unique" address used just for that site, such as slashdot(at)john.jones.com. This way, if any one address becomes abused, I just put a nouser entry in virtusertable for that address.

I just hope this doesn't catch on too well ;-P . That would really reduce the effectiveness of this method as spammers would catch on. In which case, unique addresses would have to be explicit (many aliases) as opposed to implicit (via catchall). Slightly more time consuming.

The only difference now is that the liberal courts of today show total disregard for legal precident on this subject. Today's court's don't apply laws, they unlawfully create them to fit their biases.

From the FAQ: "The new site will incorporate features from both G4TV.com and TechTV.com."

While this sounds great, more often when one company buys or merges with another, the resulting website contains little to none of the archived content that used to be available before the merger. This results in millions of broken links across the web and a loss of vast amounts of documentation and software. TechTV.com has been a fairly useful resource to nubies and even some old hats. It'll be a shame to see all of that content disappear.

You may hate the state tax systems, but you have a hell of lot more control over it. In fact, that is the whole point behind state's rights. But then again, what would you know about American history when all you base you beliefs upon is a failed Communist Manifesto.

IIRC, IBM does or did have a ViaVoice library ported to Linux. No, it's not OSS, but I'm not even sure this is relevant given the context of his statements. 25. Waiting for WINE on What's Keeping You On Windows? · · Score: 1

I've been using Linux exclusively on my home machine, work machine, and laptop for nearly a year now. I've been using Linux at work for as many as 4 years. However, I have a crutch called Windows Terminal Server. The reason why is that I cannot get certain applications to work under WINE. For example: Oracle JInitiator. Oracle seems to express no interest in releasing a Linux version of this java derivitive plugin, so I'm held to a windows app. WINE does not properly execute this as of one of the latest releases.

I think what is comes down to is that WINE needs to provide a stable platform for most all windows apps whether they be business or play. When that day comes, our terminal server needs a good boot to the head.
