I tend to agree, at my previous company, we had abouth 20 Maxtor harddisks, of which abouth 7 or 8 eventually crashed. 6 years ago, when I was working for a computershop, we also had loads of Maxtor drives RMA'd. So I will avoid Maxtor (And Western digital) if possible.
I have found some uses... really!

I have a wap phone (a siemens s35i) and I must say, ehre in the Netherlands I have found the wap phone quite handy. It enabled me to check if there were any traffic jams on the roads, wether the trains were on time (no!) and it was also very handy to keep up to date with the news, especially in the light of the recent tragic events.
I too am not a U.S. citizen, but I do believe this should not go unpunished. But the rub: who do you punish? The problem with those coward terrorists who have been lured into these vile deeds with stupid fairytales abouth paradise is taht they are already dead, and if not, they do not consider death a punishment. Now, if the U.S. could sublimate Ben Ladin and his gang, I would applaud that.
Can someone please explain to me why a lot of the newer laptops, like the ibook and the smaller sony vaio's have no Irda? I find this extremely annoying, especially since my old vaio (505ex) has irda which I use often with my cellphone. Are there any irda options you can buy for these laptops, and do they work with linux and mac os x? Furthermore, how is the quality of the tv out of an ibook, can it be used for presentations?
I got the LCP cert this spring, without any studying, just by using my knowledge and experience with Linux. I found it not too hard, but there where several questions which could be interpreted in different ways. Any how, I did it because it only costed me the exam fee, and hardly any time at all, and it certainly is cooler than MCP or MCSE (I mean, my brother is MCSE and he can't even get a peer2peer network to work).
Ah, I would love to get a ZX80, but alas, they are rare. I do have a ZX81 and a QL, they are some of my favourites of my computer collection, along with the Amiga 1000 and Sparcstartion 1+.
Exactly like my situation. I use Linux on my workstation aty my office, and am able to do most of the tasks with it, using staroffice. A Lotus Notes client for Linux would be great, although I haven't found it yet on the site. At the moment I use the notes client with NT with vmware, which works quite well, but a native client would be nice. I have also worked with the webmail interface, but that isn't very optimal either, since it depends on java, and the javavm of netscape seems to suck. (Is there a way to replace the javavm?)
I have bad experiences with Maxtor harddisk. At my office we have a few (abouth 12) Maxtor harddisks and many of them (I think abouth 4) have stopped working. We haven't got that much failure with seagate, ibm, quantum or fujitsu harddisks. We for sure will never buy Maxtor again, but does anyone else has bad experiences with Maxtor?
I have a g400, and I really like it, it's 2d signal quality is far better than my riva tnt based asus card. The geforce is probably much better in 3d, but the 3d of the g400 is rather good, and it has dual head on a single card. It works well with linux, freebsd, openbsd, beos 5 etc. But I can't get it to work with plan 9... I am trying to set up the g400 with xfree 4 dual head, but I haven't succeeded, and I can't find any clear documentation on that (any tips anyone?). Single head works well with xfree 4 with mandrake linux.
Reading technical books before going to sleep has some strange effects on me. One day I was reading 'Learning the Bash shell (ORA)' before sleeping.. and that night I dreamt that I met a beautiful young and willing girl... who thought me how to write shellscripts for bash!
I have had several phones, the one I use now is my favourite, a Nokia 8210. It's small, good ui, has Irda, which works with laptops and my palm iii, and it has vibrate. I have had Ericsson (gf788, sh 888), Motorola (8400, 5200) bot nothing beats the Nokia.
I love my vaio 505ex, it's a beautifull machine, and it works great with linux. On the other hand, I do not like it's battery life of 45 minutes. Does anyone know where to get a port replicator for my vaio? And has anyone got the irda working with linux?
Vaio owners probably know the feeling when they get out their vaio in public, and watch the envious looks of the people around you...
I see some polarisation here. On one hand, many geeks, especially American are rather conservative and do not use drugs. On the other hand, many geeks, often during their college years do use or at least have tried drugs. Some see it as a form of hacking the mind, wich I personally have sometimes experienced. When using psylocybine, I have often felt like debugging my mind.. and getting rid of some nasty errors, and I feel great afterwards. I have used all kinds of substances, but the psychedelics are the only thing that I sometimes still use.
I completely agree with you. The strength of linux/gnome and other opensource initiatives have been the freedom of choice. A plugin system with which you could select which srcipting language you want to choose (wether it is perl, java, assembler...) would be great, especially if this would work across several applications. What 's also is important in such a system is that you can choose NOT to use certain language modules that you find a security hazard.
Linux is not a house of cards. The hype surrounding linux and it's related companies are. I do noet expect that Linux will come down as a dekc of cards, but the hype might, since Linux itself is not a bad product. But... why a shitty unix like SCO for commercial unix? You're pro BSD... choose BSDi! And your expectations about the companies taking another direction are very unprobable. I think these companies like Linux, and they're less or more stuck to some GPL matters.
What are good, cheap bookshops, that also ship cheap to Europe, or even have an European affiliate? Most bookshops seem te be quite expensive when it comes to shipping to Europe.
THe german C't is imho the best computermagazine in the world. It comes out every two weeks, has extensive coverage of a broad range of computernews, including politics, new technology, hard and software reviews, tips and tricks, along a broad array of platforms, is quite objective, is quite critical of intel and microsoft but do not do microsoft/ intel bashing, but give critical reviews with argumentation instead, and will also point out the good things of a microsoft or intel product. Doesn't follow hypes blindly, has good practical sections and stay critical of products of companies that advertise in them. The only drawback for some: it's in german... for me that's no problem but for some it is. Well.. there's also a Dutch version.. Besides, I like reading on paper better than on screen.
I agree. Dune was a great movie, what made it so special was the hand of David Lynch, who created a very intense athmosphere. I bought it on VHS and gave it to my girfriend. She saw it about 200 times.. I also like the soundtrack, although I normally do not like Toto. There are some weak scenes in the movie, but in general, the athmosphere is great, especially with the harkonnens.
Well, Linux is kind of a communist OS.. but this may be something good for Linux. Imagine, a country of 1 billion people.. 1 billion potential linux users and developpers.. now if they only started to forbid Microsoft OS-ses..
Ik met the love of my life on the internet, via a newsgroup. We then met IRL and then learned each other better via email. The real romance was started IRL though. Alas, she's no longer my SO, but it may work, and I am very glad that I met this woman via the internet.

Finally a journalling filesystem in the standard kernel..

I wonder, how does the reviewed book compare to "essential unix system administration" by Frisch/O'Reilly? I found the O'Reilly book rather good.

Thanks, you have just solved one of my greates linux frustrations! It works great..

Why is 11-11-1999 not an odd day? I feel that I am missing something very fundamental here..

Not if Intel kills AMD. THen our choices will again be limited.
