  1. Songbird needs music sync support on iTunes On OS X Finally Has Competition · · Score: 1

I took a look at Songbird recently after aquiring an android phone (t-mobile G1).

Since iTunes won't sync it I was hoping that some open source solution existed. While I was very impressed by how far Songbird has come as a music player, the lack of sync options made me go back to iTunes :(

BUT, since songbird can use fancy plugins, maybe some smart person will realize that we need music sync support for non-ipod devices (and ipods too, I suppose) and write some plugins.

  3. Re:Why do i want an iPhone? on Apple Plans Cheaper Nano-Based iPhone · · Score: 1

Because Apple is the first company to do it right.

I had a nokia e70 before my iPhone, and it has more features than the iPhone, including a webkit based web browser, and google maps, etc. but the iPhone does all of the things I did on the nokia about 100x better.

Safari on iphone is better, google maps is *way* better, the screen is bigger, it syncs easily with my macbook (the e70 required editing a few plist files to get it to sync) and the email is better. The mp3 player is 1000x better, including the part where I can use normal headphones with the iphone vs. custom nokia phones with that huge plug thing.

The only thing I miss is being able to record videos (which could easily be a software update to the iphone) and a few other small nit-picky things.

The great thing about using SWFObject (linked in the original thread post) is that even if the users don't have Javascript enabled, presuming you set up your page correctly, they will still see the alternate content, which means your site is still perfectly accessible and valid.

Progressive enhancement has been used across the web for years, so why not treat Flash the same way as all the other extra bells and whistles?

The whole 'click to activate' thing can be bypassed by using Javascript to embed your plugin/activex content.

It's really easy, and there's a number of solutions for embedding Flash and Quicktime content. (And these methods make it much easier to embed the content and detect the presence of the plugin anyway. Many people are already using it, like youtube.com for example.

the aluminum powerbooks were the icing on the cake... firewire, built in wireless, excellent battery life, wide screen displays making them perfect for web development work where i would need to run photoshop along side apache and php.

There's a big difference between recycling and building sustainable things.

If you read Cradle to Cradle, you'll see that the book bashes recylcing just as much as Penn + Teller do.

We don't need to recyle things, we need to build from materials that are sustainable... Or if we do try and recycle, the recycled goods need to be as high a quality as the original source materials.

Current recycling just costs us a ton of money (and engery) and then dumps a bunch of crap on us that can't be used for the same things again, so the recycled materials have to be used for something else.

The main reason being that creating top level domain names for specific devices is dumb. Cell phones / mobile devices may be hot shit right now, but what happens in 10 years when every device we own had access to the web... will we get a .toaster tld? what about .fridge or .car?

User agents have content negotiation and identify themselves for a reason. that is what should be used, not the TLD to determine content.
