    probably more a matter of Mutually Assured Destruction...

    although, Israel has a very powerful friend with lots of nukes. they also have enough of their own nukes to wipe Iran pretty clean if they choose. Iran don't have many friends these days, and lots of enemies.

    of course, as soon as they can figure out a way of accomplishing their goals without themselves being destroyed, i'm sure they'll act on it immediately.

    actually, both terms have been used to represent specific things since the beginning of the debate back in the 70s.

    global warming means (you guessed it!), the simple increase in global average temperature.

    climate change means the associated change in all aspects of global weather due to the increased global average temperature. you can think of it as just "what happens when you change the balance of gases in the atmosphere", where global warming is just a small aspect of that effect.

    the media has been using these two terms interchangably, much to the chagrin of sane and insane people alike.

    just a correction - melting ice caps wont be the big problem with sea levels (water is denser than ice...), but the associated thermal expansion of the ocean is a problem, with the melting ice-caps just contributing to habitat loss and dramatic news footage.

    life != species.

    a lot of species can die, and a lot more can come in their places that are better adapted to CO2.

    so what are we in those two categories? i believe we can adapt, but probably not without a massive "correction" in our population (read: billions may have to be shed from our population in order to reach an equilibrium. our only defense in this situation is better technology. some choose to work on mitigating this, others choose to bury their heads in the sand)

    a CD making machine is 90% identical to a blu-ray making machine.

    well, not single machines, but lines of different ones.

    you'd be shocked at how lo-tech the principles of it are. it's just a matter of tighter tolerances on each denser generation of media, but it's all make the same way with tweaks.

    as soon as webm gets any kind of market share whatsoever, MPEG-LA will make good on their statement (threat) that no video codec can be developed without infringing one of their patents.

    if this happens, google's lawyers might well prevail over MPEG-LA's, but who can tell?

    also, MPEG-LA have granted the world license to use their patents for h.264 for web video. we'll see what their move is now.

    well. they kinda developed mp3... i wouldn't call them patent trolls considering they didn't just acquire patents and sue left, right and centre.

    and for ages their encoder was the only decent one out there - until LAME got really good.

    left v right is a false dichotomy. as is black and white.

    if the leaked cables have revealed anything to me, it is that real diplomacy is performed in necessary shades of grey. it's all about pragmatism, harm minimization, all those things that don't make good sound bites.

    and you know what? the message i get from it is the US are not really bad. not even as bad as i thought they were. certainly they're not angels, but in most cases they're on the morally right end of things, if in a slightly machiavellian sense.

    the QLD government does not run the mines. and QLD's actually quite a large fruit, veg and sugar producer.

    also, Tasmania's green movement is much less powerful than you would like. the logging companies control Tassie, and the majority of the population is on their side (everyone needs a job).

    people want 7L V8 pole-magnets, not less sexy 1.2L 4cyl things with room for passengers and luggage but no boat or caravan.

    efficiency went right up in the late 70s as fuel got more expensive. God knows why they're dragging their feet on efficiency now, but bear in mind it's only really american cars that are this crap.
