Why should the kernel adapt to a misbehaving module? Wouldn't it make *far* more sense to shorten the symbols in the NI module to something sensible? This was the exact argument that killed the patch. I made sure that NI knows about the problem, and they made some noises that they would take care of it in future releases. But wait a minute, what defines a "misbehaving" module anyway? How about when you have hundreds of entry points in your modules and you try to give them all unique, sensible, and human readable names? You end up with symbols 1000 characters long. Does it break anything else? No. That argument is exactly elitist. Shouldn't the kernel be about working for the users, not making convenient coding for the developers? Things should just work, No one should care who has to bend for who to make it happen.
I can confirm that your work will be for nothing, if you are not well known. Even patches written by project members will be ignored if the rest of the members don't feel like addressing the bug. Andrew Morton wrote a patch for a kernel bug that I submitted relating to National Instruments Data Acquisition drivers not working with the Fedora kernels. The symbols in the NI drivers are too long for modpost to handle, so he created an expanding buffer patch. Then it went nowhere. This kind of pisses me off. I love Linux, but I fucking hate elitist nerds. This is why more people will not accept Linux when valid hardware drivers can't be properly supported because of personality problems.
That's not hte real reason. The real reason is because I can install one copy of XP in a virtual machine and then copy the vmdk file to any number of real machines. Not that I would want to anyway.
Who are people that ought not be using Linux? People that you assume are too stupid to get it? Trust me, I wouldn't try to tell someone who wants to play the latest PC games to install Linux. But someone like my mom who uses her computer to surf the web, read e-mail, play web-based online games, and use OpenOffice, Linux is fantastic. And spyware and virus free. I don't have to worry about websites installing a trojan on my mom's computer. Crash-and-burn? What is this you speak of? Only time I've seen Linux crash was when I did something stupid when programming. If someone is having a bad time with Linux because of me, they know that they can expect me to help to make it better. I don't leave them stuck. I simply don't agree with your statement.
I'm someone who's family and friends respect when it comes to my knowledge of technology. I take every opportunity to recommend Linux and moving away from Microsoft products. I take the time to show them how to use Linux. I help install and setup systems. I have converted over half of my employer's systems over to Linux and ported some of our mission critical software over to Linux as well. The only thing preventing us from going 100% Linux at my job is management's huge mistake of buying MAS90 from Sage Software. MAS90 isn't entirely Linux friendly, but with recent advances in the Wine project, that may become a non-issue as well.
Fuck MSFT. Their business practices are deplorable. Take a look at some of those internal MSFT memos circulating the internet if you don't know what I'm talking about. Besides that, who wants to use shitty software written by an army of H1Bs anyway? Ever try to get support from MSFT? Good luck. Linux support is outstanding, in my opinion. And besides that, if you aren't getting the support you need, and you have the programming chops (or know someone who does), the source code is right there for you to fix it yourself.
If this is just mental masturbation then I guess we'll see what happens in another 10-15 years, maybe I'll finally get my nut.
As soon as this MS patent bullshit started, I locally mirrored livna and fedora 7 and all the sources. I'm planning to burn several DVDs to put in storage soon too. Now I have a snapshot of Linux "the way it was" and "the way I use it" before Microsoft fucks everything up (as usual). You know, as much as the sky is blue, they are going to fuck it up for everyone, bastards.
I just wish some blockbuster game house like this would release a Linux version of their next blockbuster _first_ then give the gamers a year to wait for the Windows port. There would be so many new Linux users that Microshaft would shit their pants.
I will go back to using my Commodore Amiga (or buy a Mac) before I would buy another copy of Windows from these stupid fuckers. You will have to pry the penguin from my cold dead hands Microsoft! You cannot force people to buy your shit, if they don't want it. The only companies getting away with that racket is the auto insurance industry, but at least there is some form of competition there.
They just joined my boycott list. Alongside WalMart and Microsoft. These corporations disgust me with their "business" practices, and I choose not to supply these asshole executives with any more of that money they did not earn. I pray that all 3 go out of fucking business someday.
But will they advertise it? Maybe even put a noticeable ad on their home page? Not everybody who might be interested reads/. believe it or not. I believe that it will be doomed to fail because nobody will know about it, just like the Linux version of Pro/ENGINEER that will shortly disappear because of "slow adoption"
I can see it now, a new TV commercial with some really catchy techno music blaring and a closeup of this strange looking computer desktop flashing through different applications that the average user could relate to, while some hot chick quickly explains what you are looking at. Joe user will say to himself, what the heck is that? I gotta check that out! Pique the public's curiosity, and things might happen. The average person has no idea what Linux really is!
Hmm.. Microsoft partners with Novell. Months later Mono has support for VB.NET? Coincidence? I don't think so.
I used to use SHIT.NET before I was exposed to Qt. I'll never look back!!! Mwah, ha ha

OpenBravo is the only one I've seen that looks promising. Compiere was incredibly difficult to setup, I never actually succeeded. Try the demo link above.
Don't even think about using Sage products. They are TERRIBLE! I speak from experience here. They were written using 20 year old "Business BASIC" language. They are not even truly client-server applications, they use file sharing and locking instead. Very unreliable. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ProvideX

The defense should show video 3 of this series to the judge when Microsoft finally brings their patent lawsuit against Linux vendors:

Pass them around so everybody can install crappy software on their computer(s). After all, Microsoft WANTS you to pirate their crap.

So far, there doesn't seem to be any lack of demand for a good .NET developer.
There is no such thing as a "good" DOTNET developer.
