Yeh, even on a 667MHz PIII with 700 megs o' RAM, Omniweb 3rc2 renders like a slug. I'd say it's more Omniweb, with it's conversion to RTF and whatnot, that make it so sucky.
One of the goals of many who water cool is lower overall noise. I would think that a shower head would increase it.
The idea of ambient cooling of the water is really cool though. How about flowing it over a conductive plate? It doesn't need to be expensive. Some salvaged material should do. Hell, just about everything necessary for a water cooler should be available at a junk yard or similar place where cool stuff goes to die.
Your mod is of much higher quality. Hell, it's a better article than many of the 392 articles on building a water cooler written in the last coupla years.
You'd think that folks would quit re-inventing the wheel after a while..
They didn't throw it away, as you say, because the OS they started with didn't use it either.
The fine look of elegantly set type you apparently value so much isn't covered system-wide. Try making your default font in Terminal a TrueType or Opentype font. Ain't it lovely?
Anybody have any references to the actual differences between Display Postscript (as used in OPENSTEP, Rhapsody and the 1.X releases of OS X Server? I suspect most of the qualities of Quartz could be realized with DPS. IIRC, OmniWeb 3 has anti-aliased type under OS X Server 1.2.
Aqua was designed to look stunning, I'll give you that, but is it really necessary to need a 3D accelerated graphics card (and throttle it, to boot) just to draw windows and scroll?
Project and Interface Builder rock, the term program and the ability to drag n drop and cut, copy, and paste make me smile. However, the non-inclusion of Services, and the insane hardware requirements make me not use OS X anymore. It's more satisfying to me to use OPENSTEP, and try to make the most modern equipment as possible work with it. But that's me.
What? no access to the innerworkings? How *ever* do the programmers get their shit done?!
Umm.. How's about MacsBug? Apple's MacsBug page.. Of course, that's for the classic OS. Ahh.. You say "That's just a debugger.. Where's the commandline?" (sissy) You must know about Mac OS X. That's all I'm gonna say about it..
Graphics? No, not w/ Linux.. Publishing? No, not w/ Linux.. Admin? That would be something if they had the $$ to throw around to buy OS X capable Macs..
Hell, I bet, with the source, and the last version of ProjectBuilder that would build M68K code, you could build OS X Server.. A Dimension, cool as it is, would have a helluva time doing Quartz, unless they wrote a *very* optimized window server.. My guess is that 10.X is out..
In the filming of some movie, Altered States, IIRC, there is a scene w/ a live mouse submerged in a liquid. Swimming, breathing, being a mouse. That liquid was Flourinert, and it was real.
Don't get any funny ideas for a prize winning Halloween costume, though. It's in the neighborhood of $400 per gallon. Before quantity discounts, of course. I hear tell that the price of the coolant is the deciding factor in the decommission of Crays all over the land.
Here's a link to (I think) the O/C article... It involved Fluorinert and everybody's favorite, liquid nitrogen.. http://www.octools.com/articles/submersion/submers ion.html
Way to go, Trident. Found yourself squeezed out of the market, and now what do you do? Shoot yourself in the foot! Way to go. Couldn't have happened to a nicer company.
Funny, I was just working on splicing together OPENSTEP 4.2, FreeBSD, and Darwin in hopes of getting enough of a foundation together as to see *some* of the MacOS X Beta function on Intel.
All of the source I have seen for each Darwin package has ProjectBuilder makefiles, so I assume it will build under OPENSTEP properly. If this is true, then it just *MIGHT* also build under Project Center for GNUstep..
I agree. ATI drivers aren't too hot for Windows, either. In a lot of people's opinion, they are a second or third rate chip producer, anyway. In reference to the second reply, I saw a petition to get the NVidia GeForce 256 in the G4. That would be something. ATI is holding the Mac back from really being a killer game machine. Well, that and the Ultra-Retarded one button mouse. I mean who wants to play ANYTHING on a box with 8 megs of VRAM?!
MTV. Music Television. Period. Nothing more, nothing less. The forays into other "popular?" cultural segments should be left to the truly represntative, unbiased, non-advertisement funded television stations. Is there such a thing? I HATE ( I can't emphaisize this enough!) TV and haven't had one in years, but am getting cable for $10 a month, just to shave a bit off my internet access, and to be able to view banal, corruptive (mis)information such as this. I suspect I will be very aggravated after a week of being subject to this kind of 'programming', as will numerous high school aged youths. IMHO, this piece cannot possibly do any good.
pfffft.. The infamous Slashdot credibility...
More re-hashed fabrication to cause ripples and get some hits.

If they had, they wouldn't be where they are today.
Uh huh.. And in other Google news, did you notice the spellchecking and automatic search of correctly spelled query?

And slower.. Where? In IE?
How much do you really think they had to do with OS X?
Where do you work where you had these choices?
Graphics? No, not w/ Linux.. Publishing? No, not w/ Linux.. Admin? That would be something if they had the $$ to throw around to buy OS X capable Macs..
I wanna work there!

There's buzz about the OS X version. Apparently, it's done, just waiting to be set free, according to Graeme Devine:
" Mac stuff.
I've been playing the WolfMP test natively under Mac OS X. I've also got the OS X installer for WolfMP all wrapped up and standing by. "
Came from here:

Pulled 130+K.
I didn't find the game anything to get yer panties in a bunch about, though.Yeah.. This has been making the rounds in the Mac circles for what.. Since about a month after the Ti came out?
That there is pretty rotten.. But also damned funny! I'm torn!
Dunno what the deal is, though..

Also, much of it is packaged as a Debian dpkg!

I thought the SAME thing. Look at the european pics. Actually a cool looking machine. Stands on side, too. Wonder how the tray will work then!
Also wonder if there will be any steam from IBM over the PS2 name. Doubtful, since they seem to deny that they ever existed...
