That is granted you call breakdancing, dancing. I call it an evolution of that mass seizure that occurs at nightclubs now. Being in sync with another person is something else.

Notice those are touristy lines. They need those for the douche foreigners who don't have manners. Get away from the tourist traps, and those signs become less, and less prominent. If there's an emergency, people will make a call. No ones going to fine them as far as I know. On the flip-side though, I love the smoking bans on the street in many locations. Those have actual laws. Don't work 100% of the time, but pretty damn near. Smokers can be "cool" huddled into those weird "smoking zones" scattered around the place.

People on international flights need not be making calls especially. Those 10+ hour flights have 1/3-1/2 the passengers sleeping at any given time. Those sleeping passengers will happily show the first person who makes a voice call to some fresher air the moment you start up a conversation on Skype. CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW!?!?!?

And this is why I love Japan. People are generally polite. I can count on my hand how many times I've seen someone talking on a cellphone on the trains here. No law needed. Just people acting how they would like you to act to them. And it was always someone not Japanese who used a cellphone. It's sad when a foreigner in another country can't stand other foreigners because they are usually an embarrassment.

Eh? The government is by the people, for the people. If a cellphone ban is representative of anything, it's representative of a FUNCTIONING system. The government types sit up in first-class or have jets chartered. This cellphone thing means nothing to them. The majority wanted it made law to not allow smoking in many states if the business serves food, and shockingly it happened! I don't smoke personally nor really agree with say my own state's law (Nevada) where you can't even smoke in bars if they have food (it's a bar for christ's sake!). It's majority rule at the end of the day.

The MAJORITY doesn't want to hear about your kid's tooth they lost, or uncle Thom's rectal exam. To be honest I'm with them on the sentiment. If I'm stuck in one location for hours on end I'm getting some sleep. Anything urgent will be in voicemail or text message form when you land. You sure as hell won't be doing anything about it before you land. And if your really too important to be disconnected that long, you one need a reality check, and two you should send someone "less important". God knows the world can't go on without you if that plane were to crash!

I'll take that soap box and burn it for you thank you very much. Threadjack a real instance of government gone awry please. This is not one of them.

You would assume keep burning something that WILL injure people over something that "might" in the event of a near impossible meltdown. Not to mention coal pumps out allot more radioactive material than a plant will! Sure, coal is dispersed over the entire planet, but thats a ton of material floating around in the atmosphere. Thats not even counting the numerous other shit thats emitted when you burn coal. I don't know about you, but I'll happily take the EXTREMELY unlikely possibility of a plant going critical over the shit thats emitted by coal flying around everywhere. I wonder if people like the GP would suddenly change their tune if they ever experienced living near a coal burning power-station. It's a guarantee the coal will injure many living near the plant in the long-term, and the rest of us further away in the even longer term.

Nuke-plant? No one has their life impacted short of a leak, or catastrophic meltdown. Which by the way, how long ago was the last time a nuke-plant injured anyone? Oh yeah...Chernobyl. The last actual meltdown was the 3-mile incident which no casualties occurred. Those were also when the technology was still largely misunderstood. Proper precautionary measures have since been adapted that far exceed any possible future meltdowns. Reactors have had their problems since, but have shown themselves quite safe. But by all means! Don't let logic & reason sway you. You have principles!

However, 2.0's max/burst speed of 480Mbit/s is very different from it's average speed (about 240Mbit/s), and substantially lower than Firewire's sustained speed. It's a side effect of something that relies on the host to do the heavy lifting vs a device that handles it's own heavy lifting. Not looking forward to similar crap with USB 3.0, not to mention the continuance of shitastic driver support I've always seen from USB vs Firewire.

It's your choice as a consumer to buy locked down phones, or not. It's not an American cellphone situation. It's called market forces. As you yourself have said, you paid $20 for a KRAZR. Which is oddly what most budget shoppers do. Yes it's locked down, but you paid once again, $20. Same goes for the iPhone crowd. If they want the iPhone they have to play by the carriers rules. Nothing says they HAVE to buy an iPhone. It's their problem if they want a status symbol that badly. Cellphones cost money to make. End of story. Yes you paid $20 for your phone, but you'll pay the other $150 (plus more I'm sure) during the 2 year contract you get stuck in. Me? I pay whatever the cost for a phone that does everything I want, and is not locked down in the slightest (Nokia N95). Every time I hear someone bitch about phones being locked down, or not being able to do what they want because of the damned phone companies I just smile, and remember they have no concept of long term cost vs paying up front for what they are getting. You pay far more at the end of the day with contracts for what you get, and are very limited. It's not the phone companies fault if people can't think for themselves.
