Many of the comments so far are to the effect that Freespire is just another "me too" free distro. I think a careful review shows that this is not quite true. The most important difference is that it comes, out of the box, with proprietary software when necessary because there is no viable free alternative. One can argue whether this is a good thing, but it is a difference.
It's not free, it's $20/year for the CNR system to install them.
This is just like Mandriva and their club, didn't do much for them either.
Modern OCR programs can pull out pictures and text with very little drama & some of them can handle science and math content just as easily.
Got a link? I haven't yet been able to find any good (and easy to use) Free Software ones.
I have yet to find any OCR software that does a decent job. I have ended up scanning everything as a picture so at least it looks right. Otherwise it's quicker to copytype stuff into a new document.
I could possibly squeeze out a few more minutes of savings by scheduling my vacation days to align with the potentially longest commutes (e.g., non-Friday school days in the months of November, February and April)
Easy, just have every Monday and Friday off if school is in.
Didn't someone once try and get the working week down to three days?
Until we can have individual control over the DVD player, TV card, Radio etc these things are not going to work. The alternative is to have one of these per person in a family.
So instead of having one good DVD player and TV screen we have to have four of these? Don't think so.
We have to go back to the mainframe idea, one big, fast box that everyone can log into. Like multi-room audio systems. It can't be that hard to do.
The other problem is social, if each member of the family is holed up in their own room doing their own thing how is that going to affect their social skills?
Just because your printer handles PS doesn't mean you can just dump a PS file to it and have it print. Many use proprietary encodings of the PS data as it's sent to the printer.
As for installation...
emerge -uD cups cd samsung-driver./install.sh
What's this cd sam... crap. Click!
Most people can click stuff, typing is way too much effort.
so basically the thing you want, is full support. someone who would test all the dependancies and stuff when every package is released. and you want it for free.
This could be a good way to earn money in the OSS arena though.
You're saying because your printer manufacturer hasn't followed the 25 year old PS standard that Linux is broken?
No, but most people will think this. If you know enough to even know what PS stands for you'll have bought a printer that is capable of it.
To the general public things like printers may need the CD that came with them but not have to chase help forums to get a test page. Until this is changed, Linux is not ready for the desktop. So we have to complain to the hardware manufacturers until it does work out of the box.
"We can afford to take some risks with Dapper+1, because Dapper has turned out so well."
I love Ubuntu and all that, but jeez, get it out the door first!
I have a funny feeling that "Dapper Drake" will end up being the Mandrivel killer. Mandrake have gone downhill fast over the last few years to the point now where even their club members have had enough. Take a look at the stats.
If Ubuntu can take their users and add some Windows users they could be in a very good place.
I agree they need to get Dapper out and see if the finished product lives up to the hype, if it does, Ubuntu could be the distro of choice.
I guess they're hoping Vista does well then.
What's the colour got to do with it?
That depends on the country you're in.
In Australia there is no "fair use", if you copy a CD to the computer you broke the law.
No, you'd have to leave the wife at home...that's another good point
"Freespire won't ship with software to allow DVD playback, though Carmony says users can buy it through Linspire's Click and Run (CNR) service."

To make them seem more friendly and of course get more publicity for their commercial products.
are always asking for money. If you want package you must join our club, today you can join for just $99
With PLF support I don't see any reason to stay with Mandrake. Ubuntu is improving while Mandrake is declining.
Shame, but yes their commercial ideas have ruined it for a lot of people.
Having other interests is one reason why computers are not so popular in Australia.
Good weather and a keen intertest in outside activities mean most families use a computer less and enjoy more traditional activites more.
That's what we use mobes for. Text your friends and make sure you're all going to the right place at the right time.
No more conversations like "We were just down the road" or "we missed you by minutes"
Phones don't have to replace real meetings and real relationshsips. Some people let them do it, others don't. You choose which you want to be.

Yep, I noticed the logo an went off on a tangent learning about Miro for a while. Now this has come up I just deleted all the links I'd picked up.
Sometimes the publicity is not good.
I think maybe we should wait until the current standards are, erm, standard.
Even today I have to tweak valid code to make all the browsers see it the same.
Get the basics right first, like float, tranparency, opacity etc then add to it with whatever is needed.
Do I get a medal?
Hmm, is there money being wagered here?
What's this cd sam... crap. Click!

So other markets should pirate DVD's as much as China to get a better price?
Sounds like the rest f the world has some catching up to do.
I thought everything was meant to be getting smaller, or did they mean the storage capacity?
This could be a good way to earn money in the OSS arena though.

I agree with this, but also when I choose that way I don't want some wizard putting it back or an update changing the setting I explicitly chose.
Linux is not perfect but it's not the worst option.
