That is somewhat reasonable but assumes that the capabilities of the netbooks will remain below the minimum for proper usage of OOo or MS Office. that will not be true for next generations of hardware. As soon as people find they can use netbooks the same way they can use desktop PCs, the lack of training in using certain applications will become apparent again.
FF needs a updater service that runs in the System context so that all FF updates can get installed without the user being logged on as an administrator.
They have something similar. and so does Adobe Reader, Google Earth, iTunes, OpenOffice, Daemon Tools, Quicktime, and if I had more software on my Windows PC, I would probably have more people volunteering to hijack the bootup process. actually, if it were not for tools to limit who and what can run at boot time, I would be yet another unhappy Windows with a PC that wants to have a life of its own.
I hope that with time, more companies developing for Windows will revert to using whatever MS says is the proper way to install and update apps. That is the crucial feature that Linux distros already have but depends on people/companies' decisions, not on technology.
Apple will build a user-accessible liquid coolant tank and will sell small bottles with coolant of different colours and scents. Even printer ink manufacturers will be jealous of the margins:)
I thought that Vista was a major re-write because of the new secutiry model. If that is the case, would it be reasonable to do another "major re-write" just a couple of years later? People might want to look into TinyXP project to see how much improvement can be made to a standard installation before demanding major re-writes.
I don't mean to offend anyone Canadian, but when I wrote about the major Navy forces in the region I was thinking of USA and Russia. Maybe China too if this story goes on for a long time and they become the owners of Eastern Russia.
As for UN-sanctioned borders and conflict mediation, if there is enough oil for this to become a conflict, I suspect the UN will not be able to cope.
If the ice melts and access to these areas becomes easier, I imagine there will be a major stand-off between the Navy forces of the major countries involved in this dispute and nobody will have the means to build any oil rig.
I hope that by then there will be a practical way to use hydrogen or something else instead of oil.
If you visit The Pirate Bay and look for TinyXP you'll see that it is possible to slim down normal XP to 400MB (after installation) and use that as a good base for customization. Considering the way this is achieved, I'm surprised that OEM's haven't adopted the technique to make their own Windows "editions".
MS needs the many different versions as a sales aid but also to react to litigation about bundling products. Vista Home Basic will have less things bundled compared to Windows 7 "home", unless they get away with selling stuff like notepad as a subscription service.
The accessory components that will be bundled as part of the "basic" pack will increase to keep up with what's standard with competitor's OSs.
This is IMHO yet another matter where a "software rating" should be a mandatory feature on the software, be it on its box or on the installation screen and "about..." screen.
I'm thinking of having standard icons for stuff like "Software phones home";"requires TSR agent on start up";"tries to update itself over the internet";"is shareware" "is freeware";"contains DRM measures that cannot be circumvented under the DMCA or equivalent legistlation"; etc. etc.
A company releasing software that does not comply with "what it says on the tin" would be named and shamed.
hi. It's probably tragic that the first search result you'll get on google for "HOSTS file" is for tools and instructions on how to filter out thousands of ad servers using a custom made HOSTS file. I use it on all my PCs and when I use someone else's computer everything looks very unfamiliar...

in spite of the spectacular summary, I chose not to RTFA. too gory for work.
Obama is doing a good job.
But Salesforce doesn't compete with Microsoft.
oh yes they do. MS Dynamics CRM had its hosted version launched recently. http://www.microsoft.com/dynamics/crm/product/hosted.mspx

yet another example of millionaire investment in law enforcement that is foiled by the hood.

the return of Mr. Goatse !
... played live is a great feeling when everyone starts shouting "F*** you I won't do as you tell me!"

... and you don't feel that the old OS is a bit clunky after using Vista and going back to your XP machine?
did you explain what CGA was? and why of those 4 colours, 2 were pink and light blue?
"a small step for a man... Crikey! look at the size of that beauty!"
It'd be nice to have a firewire port (I have a FW video camera and external drives)
2 USB ports should be enough for everyone

or in other words, if the device gets even smaller and gets embeddded in laptop PCs the lifespan of the bulb will be a non issue.

that'll be a Samsung D880 for table number 4

It works on my Vista setup. it feels great to gain some control on who runs what at boot up time.
