    Well, you take your energy as hydrogen, I'll take it as electricity at 1/4 of the price...

    Here is what I think to be the reason for the current war in Iraq. At some point, the major economic forces of the planet will have to switch from oil to something else, be it nuclear, hydrogen, ... or most likely, a mix of several of those. If the US/Japan/EU officially schedule such change for a certain period of 10/20 years while there is still oil or while the oil producers cartel is in charge, it is likely that the oil price may be manipulated to force things back to their original course. Now if the USA rule Iraq and Kuwait, then the stability in oil price that is required for the switch may be achieved.

    From your description it seems that you may need a better version of Windows, which Linux is not. They're two different products, with different requirements and many overlapping capabilities, which suggests that you can replace one with the other. In fact, such replacement is not like switching suppliers for a comodity like petrol or electricity.

    Should you decide that keeping a mixed environment of computer OS is adequate, for instance, to provide "real world experience" to students, or to benefit from some superior aspects of the Linux or other OS, your best option may be to use Remote Desktop to allow your users to access their Windows-only applications from the other OS. Keeping Windows inside virtual machines and then accessing those with Remote Desktop is also an interesting solution in terms of cost and performance.

    Another way to look at it is accepting that cities/human dwellings are not part of a normal ecosystem. This way, all the unnatural things that human activity produces in NYC (example) will be restricted to that area, thus leaving a lot of space elsewhere to plant tress, to clean up sewage, to let animals roam free, ...

    The advantage of doing this in a compact city is that there will be critical mass and a market for getting the most environmentally safe solutions for transportation and energy production, while a city that spreads a lot to suburbs with low population density will most likely fare poorly in terms of energy usage and each landowner will have to invest individually in means to clean up the area. In this sense, I believe that measuring polution per inhabitant is more useful than polution per area.

    I'm not religious, but let me try: Adam was created by God using mud from a river bank. The materials available in common earth are not different from the ones found in a human body.

    All the matter in the Universe was concentrated in one single place and time, then it exploded and eventually became all the stars, planets and creatures we know today. God is everywhere and we all are part of God.

    Simple creatures evolve to become complex creatures. If we have a really close look, the basic components and the instructions (DNA) are similar across species. The best mutations survive, the others fail and do not carry on in the gene pool. God is perfect, Nature is perfect.

    Let's say you buy a phone locked to a certain Telco, which has a license to operate a GSM/UMTS Network in your country. You go on vacation to a country where they don't have such license. In all fairness, the phone should allow foreign SIM cards, allowing you to choose between:

    a) paying extra for the roaming service, thus allowing you to use your own number while abroad;
    b) pay whatever is the normal price for services from a local provider.

    Since the provider locks your phone, you have no such choice and competition is limited. I wonder which should be the ilegal action here, locking or unlocking phones?

    why would they miss an opportunity to sell you a $300 phone that plays music , when they can sell you a $250 phone and a $250 music player :)

    True, however there is a problem in not being in the mobile phone market: mobile phones are definitely part of the digital life style that the Mac is supposed to be the hub of. This means that if or when Apple Computer decides to jump in, they cannot be competing with the 2nd grade brands, the ones that just do SMS, MMS and talk. They need to be right up there with the major brands, the ones that are touting "lifestyle" with their phone models. I'm talking Nokia here, which uses a Windows-only PC Suite but mostly works with iSync; Samsung, which does NOT iSync; Motorola, which is big in the US has a problem with usability; SonyEricsson, which is almost as good as Nokia but not as big in market share and has the same issue as Dr. Jekyll...

    If you buy a high end phone from these major brands you will spend something between EUR400 and EUR900 and get a camera, mp3, pda, all with proprietary "PC Sync" software that adds yet another piece of junk to Windows Notification panel.

    If there is another device that Apple needs to add to their digital hub, it's not a basic phone to sell at EUR39, it's an iSync-able PDA iPod with a phone in it to sell at EUR499 and it had better be shiny and pretty, because the alternatives are updated much more frequently than the iPod...
