Where the US figured out years ago that low taxes and little goverment interference is the way to go, Canada latched on the tired dogma of socialism. Fortunately, Canada has smartened up in the last decade and is in the process of becoming more competitive. But with all movements, there is always an exception. BC happens to be it.

The jury is still out on Japanese, so neither of us is right. If you would like to see what I am talking about in my message, watch Battlefield on PBS. It very interesting and gives and unbiased picture of WWII.

The message that I responsed to contained some incorrect so-called facts and implications that Winston Churchill was an arrogant snob. If the person who wrote message had read any of his books, he would know that Churchill knew a lot about many parts of the world through his service with the British government. Churchill's comments that appeared in his book are indeed correct. There are many historians who have backed this up and it is very well documented. I suggest reading about history before insulting a great former leader that kept the world free. As far as specific evidence, you need to look no further than Battlefield which airs regularly on PBS. They discuss this communication problem the Japanese had at length.

As far as English itself is concerned, which has little to do with the semantics of programming languages, it is by far the best language available for communication. While it is highly irregular, it is has room to accomidate new things. Other languages don't boast this feature to the same extent.

While English is based in European culture, it doesn't dominate it. English no longer is structured like Kings spoke it in the 1700's; it has changed with the times. I can't say the same about Japanese it is still retains many old words that have historical significance.

But that is isn't single greatest feature of English. The best feature is our alphabet which has little redudancy. Languages like Chinese and Japanese have too many characters that share meaning. This excessiveness clearly presents itself as English requires 26 characters and Kanji,Mandarin, Cantonese,Fuji are in the tens of thousands of characters. Because of this problem, I have found Japanese hard to learn and study.

Just another note. I have studied Linguistics, Pacific and Asian studies and Japanese during my undergraduate degree.

  6. No Amount of Effects Substitutes For A Good Story on End Of Fox Animation · · Score: 1

2D/3D, it doesn't matter. The driving force behind a good movie is a good story. Titan A.E. didn't have it. Instead it relied on what most movies do these days: well-known actors, lots of effects (in this case, animation) and a so-called killer soundtrack.

I love technology when it is used well: The Matrix, Jurassic Park. However, I loathe the movie more if it is driven by effects such as Independence Day. There needs to be a balance.

However, there is some hope. Hollywood hates big flops such as Godzilla. Give it time and the market will correct the problem.

I live in BC so I feel the impact of this decision by the BC government. By having Solder of Fortune rated in this manner, I now have to go to an 'Adult' video store to get this game. Clearly, this is unreasonable as software resalers should be able to sell this game.

This is not a 'high brow' discussion. This problem is very simple to solve.

BC has been ruled by a socialist government for the past 10 years. People are growing tired of it and they are passing more and more ridiculous legislation. The government hit an all time low in a recent poll ( 13% for them while 65% for the opposition )

A couple of years ago, they passed the freedom of privacy and information act. While I appalaud the effort to restrict access to information to certain third parties, the government went too far. Essentially, it is a crime in BC now to make simple requests such as driving background checks in the context of a court case.

Past legislation aside, this new regulation is the work of one man; Andrew Petter. He is the Attorney General of BC who has taken it upon himself to make this a personal conquest. Surprisingly, the government doesn't totally support him.

Please don't us this as an example. Most BCer's are not socialists and do not want to restrict the use of information. This is the work of one man within a fractus and very unpopular government. Soldier of Fortune is not pornography.

Hopefully, the people of BC can be liberated as there is an election coming soon.

    :) Vote BC Liberal.

There is an effect which is widely discussed in Sociology and Psycology called the Hawthorne effect that states quite simply that if people know they are being studied then they tend to give false results. Case in point, the study was geared toward this result and thus these so-called brilliant PhD's go there expected result. But they ignore their own theory. How can you patent 1-click technology? If that is so then shouldn't CGI scripting and HTML forms be patented. Doesn't Amazon owe money to the WWW consortium and the writers of Perl if the same logic is used?

1-click is a cascading of events: form fill-in, credit card transaction and any other logging required. Each of these events, to my knowledge, doesn't have a patent nor will it ever. So how do all three together have it? As well, there are numerous types of databases and web servers that are used in conjunction with this process. There is just too much at work here for a patent to apply.

A patent protects the rights of a specific process or item. Algorithms are patentable because they don't change regardless of what programming language you choose. One click changes by what web server, scripting language and event logging system you use. It is just to hard to define to be patentable.

As is pointed out by many Slashdot users, this software will lead to possible abuse by school officals to target so-called deviants. In trying to find the next Colombine shooters, the school administration will target countless innocent students who are not 'normal' but who would never contemplate murder. Adolecents go through a lot of changes which are both physical and mental. Some of these changes might result in behaviour that doesn't comply with this software but is no way harmful to the school population.

These people, who are not 'normal' will now be labelled 'troublemakers'. If they didn't suffer from being social outcasts, they will be now. And how do you think a school would eventually deal with this problem child? I suspect that suspension or expulsion would be inevitable. All over a test which deams them not normal. If you don't believe me, then why do many schools in the US have security guards when most students are not violent?

Since most of my comments have scored a one, I don't expect anyone to remember what I have said in the past but I would like to mention one of my previous comments in the following section.

    * BEGIN PREVIOUS COMMENT *

Most of these tests stem from the fact the psycology, sociology and psychiatry are NOT sciences. This causes problems. These so-called mental and society professionals are given licence to analyze and predict peoples behaviour when they clearly can not.

We don't know exactly how the brain operates. Until that day comes, we can't say who will be or commit what. Actually, we may not even be able to conclude that in the future since science has found that the brain is quite dynamic in nature.

If you don't believe me and my anti-psych comments, then study Freud. He spent his whole life studying sex and didn't explain or show a whole lot. I guess we have the ediface complex to thank from him. And he was one of the most influential people of the 20th century according to CNN. I still don't think anything useful came of out his works.
