  1. What the hell would you need a fan for? on Make Your Own Sputnik · · Score: 2, Insightful

Good luck getting the fan to do any "cooling" in space. And with today's instrumentation efficiency, there's probably not a whole lotta need to worry about cooling.. I'd be more worried about keeping things heated above -40 deg C to maintain operating temperature.

  2. Disappointed. on Walt Mossberg Reviews Ubuntu · · Score: 1

This makes me disappointed that Dell and Canonical didn't work harder to get the out-of-the-box experience into tip-top shape.
    1) Why haven't they fixed the volume crashing problem?
    2) A big company like Dell could volume-license the patented media technology for a bargain and include those codecs in the release.
    3) They should have at least done a comparison with the touchpad sensitivity and set it up to be the same as the equivalent Windows machine out of the box.

I've installed Ubuntu on my friend's Dell laptop after not being able to set up the wireless network in Windows within 30 seconds. I told him I could download a patch for windows.. it was Ubuntu. He only bugs me on rare occasions about his computer problems. My cousin with the same computer and Windows on it bugs me far more often. Once a linux computer is working, it generally stays working. My parents' computers are virtually unusable now with Windows XP and Windows XP media centre editions.

I am sick and tired of people telling me that Windows is easier to use. It's not! My parents have been vacationing with me for a week, and they've been happily using my Ubuntu workstation at home without my guidance at all. They've plugged in their camera and downloaded pictures.. posted them on the web.. it all just worked! And.. Microsoft office is a piece of junk. I don't understand why the masses still support Microsoft. Their products are HORRIBLE! I've uninstalled office from my computer at work, because I was so sick of Word mangling my documents and Excel crashed non-stop. I know that Open Office isn't that much better yet, but why do people even support Microsoft? Word Perfect may not be free or OSS, but it is FAR superior to Word. Slashdotters.. let your companies know that you can't stand Microsoft anymore. From what I've heard about Vista, I hope I never have to use it during its existence.

    Cheers,

    Greg

    Finally.

"Other countries, including the U.S. and Britain, have been able to stem the tide of illegal downloading by updating laws and increasing enforcement, he said, but calls from the recording industry for updated copyright laws in Canada have gone unheeded."

It's always been my experience that CDs were way cheaper in the U.S. to begin with. Looks to me as if supply+demand has caught up finally. I doubt that any laws in the U.S. and U.K. have had much of an effect on downloading; I would argue that CDs have always been more affordable to the citizens of these countries.

I don't tend to buy many CDs because they are 3 times as much as I'm willing to pay in the first place. If I couldn't download music, I still wouldn't buy most CDs. Conversely, now that I can download music, I only buy CDs that I like. Downloading has had no effect on my purchasing of CDs.

"'A succession of Canadian governments have sat on their hands and done nothing,' he said."

WTF? Why do I have to pay a blank media tax? Who the f**k benefits from that?

  5. Air Canada + Microsoft = ? on Airbus 380 To Have Linux In Every Seat · · Score: 1

I observed a similar in-flight entertainment system on-board an Air Canada flight recently. It was running some variant of Windows. Quite "entertaining". The interface was not responsive at all, taking, I would guess, more that 10 seconds to respond to the touch screen presses. Then, after the lengthy selection process, many items were not available. The system seemed basically unusable. Kind of funny to me, because two of my most hated corporations working together made the most piss-poor excuse for a system I have seen in a long time. The system actually reminded me of that flash animation spoof, "Windows RG". FYI, I was flying on a ticket purchased for me by someone else.. I would never recommend or choose to pay for an Air Canada ticket.

Technically, you should walk down to your provincial financial office and report your purchase. You will then be required to pay tax on that purchase. Most provincial governments don't waste too much time on this. >>Try this on: In Canada, I can buy computer hardware from Alberta - which has no provincial sales tax - and have it shipped free to my house in Ontario - which has some of the highest provincial sales tax in the country - and pay (*drum roll please*) zero provincial sales tax. Likewise, if I live in Alberta and purchase something from Ontario via an online company, it is not necessary to pay Ontario's sales tax. I have heard of people from PEI getting billed for taxes from the provincial government on higher-priced items purchased out-of-province. (I'm not sure how they get the information.. I'm guessing the tax bill was for an item like a car that has to be registered provincially.)
