  1. Design Patterns in C# on C# Book Recommendations? · · Score: 1

I liked this one: Design Patterns in C#

Though it isn't a primer (obviously, given the title) it does contain quite a bit of good information. The author was responsive to my email inquiries about it as well.

    Thanks, I stand corrected.

So, instead of seeing the presentations, try to put your hands on it w/ rose-colored glasses** . If you don't like it, at least you'll learn new way to do things, which can help you in your next project ;-)

** sorry, I'm not a native english speaker... I hope it was used in the right context :-)

You have a great command of the language, but since you offered that caveat, I thought I'd try to clarify this metaphor for you.

The phrase "looking through rose-colored glasses" is usually used perjoratively, and directed at an optimist by a realist. Nobody encourages others to look at something through rose-colored glasses, nor would someone with an idealistic outlook on something admit to doing so. If I understand what you were trying to say, a better phrase in the context above would have been, "keep an open mind."

  4. Re:I don't download music anymore on RIAA Subpoenas Neighbor's Son, Calls His Employer · · Score: 1
See? This is bullshit. I'm so scared of getting sued by the RIAA, that I don't download music anymore -- and I don't buy CDs either.

I have never downloaded music. I don't even burn myself copies of borrowed CDs.

Getting something for nothing has always felt, well, wrong, I guess. I know that bashing the RIAA is a sacrosanct activity on slashdot, but could someone tell me please how downloading music isn't stealing?

No, I don't have a 20+G inventory of MP3s. Instead, I use many of the online commercial-free radio stations (Like the fabulous SomaFM.com).

My favorite is Pandora. I've discovered much music that I didn't even know existed, and even (gasp) bought CDs of my newly discovered favorites in a regular store. Please understand I'm not trying to defend the RIAA, but rather seeking a rational explanation of why it's legal (or should be legal?) to download music that the recording studio and artist don't get paid for.

If you mean MySQL, the topic at hand, I have nothing for you. However, if you meant exactly what you wrote, I picked up Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes from my local library last fall, and loved it. Learned a lot, quickly.

I was puzzled as well by the summary's assertion. Glad I didn't ask...

  8. Comic books as art? on Why Are There No Highbrow Video Games? · · Score: 1
Not only does he demean video games, but the author goes on to slander comic books.

A little off-topic, perhaps, but I always had a self-righteous distain for comic books (while simultaneously, and paradoxically, enjoying some newspaper comics, i.e. Bloom County, Calvin & Hobbes). I nurtured this snobbery in myself until I read Scott McCloud's excellent book, Understanding Comics.

It takes a highbrow view of a much disparaged art form. I highly recommend it to recovering snobs like me.

  10. Re:Who cares. on Oracle 'Losing Patience' with XenSource, VMware · · Score: 2, Insightful

If you had bothered to RTA, you'd have seen that, evidently:

Oracle is a significant player in the open-source community and, as both an open-source and commercial database provider, has a very strong interest in getting virtualization technology into the kernel.

The article also mentions the Oracle Cluster File System technology (Open Source), as well as Oracle's recent acquisition of open-source database company Sleepycat and its Berkeley DB product earlier this year.

This may explain why I got a call recently from an Oracle rep, talking about their db solutions. I sort of laughed, since I work for a small nonprofit organization, but she assured me that they did have solutions for small and medium-sized companies. I thanked her for her time without asking for more details, but perhaps this newly acquired Berkeley product was why my company was targeted as a potential customer.

No comment on the respectability (or lack thereof) of CNN, but it's not apt to compare them to the BBC. The BBC is a public broadcasting company; CNN is private.

The BBC is more comparable to PBS, although I believe the BBC is funded, at least in part, through a direct tax on those who use the service by way of a "tv license" that one must buy to purchase a tv, while public media in the US compete for grants from the CPB, which is in turn funded by taxes.

(Not to start another flamewar about public broadcasting and taxation in the US...just wanted to point out that if your impression of the interview is "It seemed like they were just looking for some big scoop with regards to people being Anti-Microsoft..." that could be explained by the profit motive inherent in a private news company.)
