  1. Small... on Coolest Cluster Ever · · Score: 2

    Looks like they fit 55 shuttles per rack, so 6 racks of space. Very small in terms of size. My Sun 10K's take up 3 racks each.

    Not sure who makes those plain metal racks, but I picked some up at costco(brown box), and they are sweet. They have big caster wheels so you can get to the cables. I use them in the closet, tv rack, and my server rack.

    Setting up the hardware is easy, I'm curious about the clustering software. Wonder if any 3d rendering packages exist (opensource/free) work on a linux cluster.

    I use Barts Boot Disk, supports most network card drivers, and has IP/IPX/Netbui (and ssh/scp.exe files), mouse with GUI worked fine.

    I can boot any pc in the house, mount the /backup share on my linux box, and ghost any PC in the house to the server. I created a bootable cdrom with his floppy disk image, so I can just boot off cdrom with ghost on it, has configs already set.
    Supports pcmcia cards too, works on my laptop. SSH had full vt102 supports, I was using VI and links.

    Thou if I was going to just use SSH, I'd use a linux boot disk , for virtual consoles...

    If you really want a minamalist desktop in windows, checkout Blackbox for windows (bb4win) Top it off with AllSnap and you have a very nice little desktop relacement.

    Well, strange, X ran with the new drivers (Mandrake 9.0) but I know there are problems with the drivers. I think the DRI is the wrong version. I couldnt run X by itself, but when I did an init5, X was running, and the /var/log/XFree.9.log said I was running the new drivers.

    Loading Unreal2k3 freeze the system, keyboard lights just blink (I crashed...)

    Maybe I'd have better luck if I was running Mandrake 8.2.

    Raw GPRS is expensive, early adopters pay the higher prices, the prices have been dropping for wireless data every month. Unlimited plans for everything comes out someday.

    Also, some Carriers use compression proxy servers, that can give you incredible speed, but you need to use the client software.

    BTW, Why would I need a wireless phone? Phone booths are everywhere! Oh wait, that was 20 years ago...

    Gentoos portage of the Xfree doesnt support the 9700 yet. (Thou I saw 4.2.99-3 was out last week, which might) I know the CVS version of Xfree did find my 9700 with --configure.

    BTW, Curse of Binary Distros?
    Funny, since Mandrake Cooker is binary, and KDE3.1rc3 and XFT, Truetype2 all work perfectly. Cant get that working on gentoo 1.4rc. I'm dual booting linux, Gentoo rocks for speed, but mandrake cooker has the rpms out quicker.

    I'll be so freaking glad whatever they call it, as long as AA fonts work in Mozilla/Phoenix, Phoenix compiles without problems, and KDE3.1rc3 (or RC4/release) compiles in Gentoo.

    Actually the time was was every 7 minutes the Monorail would run.

    BTW, if you have 30 minute commute time in Seattle, you must only be driving 1 block.

    I think you missed a few points. (I voted yes)

    There will be light rail, it will feed the Monorail to the north and south. (Which we need, full light rail would of been better.)

    Commute time by monorail will be 100% quicker than bus, good reason for people to change from bus and car.

    The Cost is high, but if we wait another 15 years (or is it 20 now, that light rail has been voted on) it will be 5 billion.

    Who knows on the federal funding, our state has been spending money like crazy on the stupidest things for years. We are still paying off the kingdom, and we build a new one. Check out our state budget at http://www.ofm.wa.gov/ for more info.

    BTW, main Seattle (Metro area) absentee voters tipped the vote to pass.

    I hope people find a way to mask the Mod chips, this EULA business is getting out of hand.

    I will admit that not everyone uses modchips for legal purposes, but there are many uses for them other than pirating games. With a modchip, you can write and run your own code, and run Linux, things you cannot do on an unmodified box.

    Microsoft's support team was not trained to deal with modded xboxes, so I can see why there would be a rule to not giving support to those with the mods done.

    You dont turn away customers because you dont support them, you still collect the monthly fee and turn them away for support. Whats next M$ saying anyone with a linux partition cant download service packs for windows?

    I'll stick with EXT3, Too many things are EXT2 based, windows drivers for EXT2 partions and Norton Ghost can backup EXT2 partitions. EXT3 gets no respect...

    GCC 3.2.1 should will make it faster with new optimizations for P4 and AMD-XP cpus.

    I'm glad to see Sun Blade 100's supported, currently only linux(suse) would work on my blades. (with kde/gnome support even) I wonder if some tested these ports on sparc64 machines.

    So there you have it; the elusive NV30 has surfaced in the form of GeForce FX. ATI has won the first round with the Radeon 9700 Pro, what will be most interesting will be what ATI has up their sleeves when the GeForce FX hits the shelves in February.

    Myself, I had a GF3 Ti500, I upgraded to a GF4 4600, but it wasnt much faster, returned it. Then a couple games came out (Battlefield 1942, Unreal2003) that really needed some gfx horsepower. So I bought the Ati 9700, Amazing. I can run older games with 6x AA perfectly, and Newer games run at 60FPS with 2x AA enabled. The GFX card works fine with the CVS version of Xfree also. (Or vesa mode for older 4.2.1) Also, I can output to TV at 1024x768, and have it mirror my monitor, great when playing some multiplayer games, or playing some divx/svcds. The Ati 9700 is a very nice product, and found some great forums at Rage3d for questions and updated beta drivers. (Like the new DX 9.0 drivers and DX 9.0 demos)

    Mine also, and I asked a couple friends who run ISPs, one in Japan, they also noticed a drop in spam. Could this "Mike and Andrew" health labs really be doing 50% of the spam in the USA?

    I have cygwin installed on my AMD box, its nice, but its not what I would call speedy. Vmware running mandrake (with vmware tools, so I can cut and paste) runs at a very acceptable speed. Not saying cygwin doesnt have its uses, working on any text log files is easier with text-utils than plain windows install anyday. (sort/cut/grep/wc/ or perl)

    On the topic of WINE thou, the only reason I use wine is for CounterStrike, and All-seeing-eye on linux.

    We also have a Sams club here, 25 bux a year for membership.
    The problem with Sams club is they seem to run out quicker of the basic's, (low inventory I think).. I think Sams club is bigger on the East cost, and expansion here is still new. Sams club had a bigger selection of munchies (chips/cheese puffs/snacks), which is good in some ways. (-:

    BTW, I didnt know that about the Eggs, need to check into that.
