    UK is a maritime nation, we can't allow bandits interrupt maritime shipping routes and commerce. Piracy on the high seas should be punished with a stiff jail time. They used to hang for that, so 10 years is rather civilized.

    You have to account to how younger generations communicate and consume media. For a large number of people Twitter + Facebook would account for nearly 100% of news and speech related activities. As such, it becomes trivially easy to censor and fail to inform without running into any traditional safeguards designed to protect free speech and journalism.

    Unfortunately, any kind of evolution is an adversarial process. For example, people who weren't somewhat resistant to plagues were left behind. So far, super-rich are the same species as the rest of us, so their success in gene editing will also be humanity's success.

    We do not have the wisdom, let alone the knowledge, to be directly editing out genome.

    Trial and error served humanity well up to this point, there is no reason to expect that it won't work in this case.

    Humanity survival depends on us becoming recursive and self-correcting, as environmental pressures that drove evolution up to this point are addressed/mitigated. Alternatively, our future is Idiocracy of breeders - whoever can push out most babies and consume most food will inherit the earth.

    If I were in charge of K2 civilization, I'd send self-assembling AI on all bands. This way once primitives throw some computational power at it trying to analyze the signal they get pwned and subjugated into building more broadcasters.

    some people seem to take a dislike to people who Do Something like driving a Prius, I'm not sure why.

    Usually, Do Something is limited to driving a Prius (and maybe ordering free trade lates) but it always comes with self-righteousness set to 11.

    The same reason people drive Prius, to appear to Do Something without actually putting any consideration or effort into it. When instead they should properly insulate their house, optimize air ducts to channel cold air to where it is needed most and maybe, depending on local climate, install some solar panels.
