I concur. I was really looking forward to GTA IV but it lacks a lot of the awesome stuff that was in San Andreas. Here's hoping they continue to try out new ideas with the next version. Actually, the ads I've seen for Saints Row make it look more like the proper spiritual successor to GTA III, but I haven't played it yet so I can't comment on how good it is. I think GTA IV is trying too hard to be realistic and dark, and it has lost a lot of the fun cartoony atmosphere that GTA has always had. 90% of the new Liberty City is dull and samey, with none of the character of San Andreas.
I also think that the multiplayer system in GTA IV is pretty crap. You can't choose what server to join (which could be seen as a benefit as you are pretty much guaranteed not to have any empty servers for long), and then when you do join and before the game has even started, the server creator can change the game type to something else. If you joined a server that was in race mode, they might suddenly change it to a cops and robbers type before the game even starts etc.
To top it off, after playing LittleBigPlanet, Fallout, WipEout HD, Burnout etc in nice crisp 1080p it's pretty annoying to come back to GTA and have a comparatively poor framerate and fuzzy graphics because of the 720p resolution:/ I'd prefer GTA III level graphics in full HD and at a nice framerate than the fancier GTA IV engine at only 720p.
Oh and I completely agree with Mrdoogee about getting calls. Even when you put the phone on silent you still see the characters giving you the thumbs down, which is annoying. I hardly ever even use the special girlfriend perks but I'm the sort of person who likes to keep everything topped up just in case.
According to wikipedia fried chips were brought to the UK (well definitely Scotland and Ireland, it's a bit more hazy about England) from Italy, so we didn't invent fish and chips either!
If you are going to be actively trying to pwn your system manually then yes you will be able to do so, They're talking about scripts being run unexpectedly just while trying to view a document for example.
No, they wanted to disable execution. Disabling writes is not going to stop you from executing something nasty (though it could help to stop more disks being infected), and disabling reads is overkill..
You're thinking from a very work based point of view. Plus if a vulnerability is exploited in a plugin such as flash for example, a locked down machine could still be compromised even in the workplace if someone is enticed to a malicious site. And home users usually will have some kind of root access escalation privileges, and can be tricked into giving a dangerous program root access. Technical solutions can work in the workplace if you have someone available to babysit everyone all the time and install what they need when they need it - but home users will always need education unless they are running machines that are only meant for single purposes and therefore aren't really configurable.
Exactly, that was possibly the low point of the summaries I've seen today. If anything, they woo hardware manufacturers to install their whole frickin OS as the default choice, and if there was no browser in Windows it make initial setup of new PCs (especially for home users) a lot more awkward. I'd rather they included their own brand browser than none at all. If they restricted the installation of any other kind of browser, that's when I'd take issue.
The app store is a great place to release games though - at least until the novelty wears off, or it becomes saturated with half decent games. That one guy who made $250,000 profit in a couple of months was just in the right place at the right time.
It's nice that there are still platforms that single developers can still develop for effectively, but personally the types of games I'm interested in are not ones that can only be played well on a small touchscreen and gesture only device. Perhaps racing games would work, but 1st and 3rd person action games would be annoyingly awkward. Even if you took advantage of the gesture interface it would just make the screen harder to see.
And googling tesseradecade (it's strangely fun typing large words with only your left hand:D ) points out that you can pluralise it as tesseradecades..
That would make sense yes, but some people here reckon Australia is one of the more difficult countries to pull this case off in. I wouldn't pretend to know much about the Ozzy legal system (or any legal system really), but since when did legal rulings in one country have any legal consequence outside of that country?
Seems to me that there's plenty of economic interest in the death penalty in places with overcrowded prisons (ie here in the UK, and over the US). Running a prison isn't free! As for no speed limits, I have to concede that point:)
How exactly do you plan to make backups of the discs without 'using' them? If you only need to have the discs in the drive to install the game and not to play it, then what difference is there? A better backup solution would be to back up the game folder after it's installed anyway, then you won't have to go through tho whole 20 disc reinstallation. You could presumably just install the base game for the appropriate registry settings (if it even needs them), and then copy back the backed up directory to get back all your expansion crap.
And why did you even bother to ask? Just make the damn copies and use them if you're that worried about damaging the discs. EA is never going to come over and bitchslap you just for using copies of the discs as long as you actually bought the originals. If you start phoning them and making a big deal about it, they might take more notice of you though. You have no reason to feel guilty if you really are making the backups for personal use, and I'm pretty sure you're covered by copyright law in that case anyway (but IANAL).
I'm sure the victim's family would try if it was made common knowledge that the film was inspiration. Whether they'd get anything is another matter. It's psychopath by the way.
Ah, this explains how when I woke up this morning all countries had the death penalty, this afternoon there were no speed limits, and tomorrow I'm due to sacrifice my firstborn child after an edict from some leader of a tribe in south America. This automatic copying of laws from other countries is making life rather awkward.
sorry, just noticed you said the trainer. In that case, obviously not. What was the point in that question? Humans can invent new notions and make inferences. Neural networks in AI generally do not have that level of complexity yet, they are usually designed to work in very restricted domains.
What does it "mean" apart from "these things are the same", which yes it would know. It might not be able to draw any inferences from it, but it's silly to suggest that the principles behind "equality" cannot be taught quite simply to any system or being that has the capacity to learn even the simplest of things.
Does that mean that if I want to find out what airbags are like, Peugeot will come and install them in my 1995 model 306 GLX for free?
It doesn't. It means that if you don't want airbags, don't pay for them. I didn't say that it is morally reprehensible for Apple to charge for upgrades. I just pointed out that since there is a free, legal and just as good alternative available (ie one that comes with airbags included, and will most likely give me free safety upgrades for at least the next couple of years) I have chosen that instead.
In this case the airbags are freely available on street corners to install yourself, at your own risk. I was going to stick with the same vehicle without upgrades until I bought a whole new vehicle, but I'm not going to say no to free products if they enhance the safety of my vehicle and are easily installed;)
Yes, you can of course pay to have a mechanic install the airbags for you if you don't feel you have either the time or skills to do it yourself. Hell, I'd do it for you if you paid me enough, but I cba supporting them long term (again unless you paid me a lot, or you rent a car from my company and I can support you as part of my day job). Luckily for you there are other people who feel they need more money or who already do freelance airbag installation and support for a living.
Any more silly questions you would like me to answer, or perhaps some more metaphors you would like me to overextend?
I would have to say that the whole thing is a load of bollocks, except I'm sitting here watching myself type this, so I have to agree that there is some strange emergent phenomena associated with even physical machines. Either that or there are such things as 'souls' which like to take joyrides in physical bodies, but the first option seems more likely.
It just seems cruel that we have a drive to continue our existence and therefore are scared of dying - but it is a bit of an evolutionary necessity after all..
So the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe isn't a country now?
I used all my mod points this morning :(
I'm glad there are at least two other well cultured slashdotters around ;)

What official body is making up these rules?
I'm not sure, but I'd start the search by eliminating all those bodies with a working right hand.
And googling tesseradecade (it's strangely fun typing large words with only your left hand :D ) points out that you can pluralise it as tesseradecades..
the answer is on the bottom
Why does everything always come down to poo?
the governor, citing that the issue was of paramount import for stealth in the imminent rise of the machines, vetoed
There we go, fixed that for you.

Didn't hear it coming neither!
Nobody ever thinks of us poor runway maintenance folk when designing their 400ton aircraft :(

The rest of the world will follow in due course.
