I guess I'm maybe speaking to the wrong crowd since Americans are really into their drag racing, but I prefer cars that can turn corners well too. I love rallying and other types of motor racing. There's little practical purpose in being able to go over 200mph in a car though, given current roads. And you can still have flames shooting out of the exhaust in an ICE :D

I used to think this kind of stuff was pretty amazing. It certainly used to be amazing for a car to go hundreds of miles an hour. Now I think it's getting to the realms of stupidity. It's pretty likely that more people are going to die doing this stuff, but for what?

I think this type of research would be better directed towards getting planes to go faster, not cars. There is probably a lot of overlap though, since basically all of the challenge here will be the aerodynamics.

Alternatively, doing the same challenge without allowing rockets would be damn cool. I just don't get the point of rocket cars.

That's pretty funny. The last girl I dated was half German, half American, and I became convinced after a while that she had Aspergers, because occasionally her behaviour was so bizarre otherwise. She wasn't great at all at being honest when rejecting most guys though. She used to tell me that she was always blunt and honest with me because I stated a preference for that, but towards the end I was wondering if she was bullshitting me the same way she bullshitted so many other guys. I read a few books on Aspergers and some people with it do lie.

I tried Macports at the time, but basically once I started using CPAN it just got messy. With Debian based distros you can usually get what you need as apt packages rather than even messing around with CPAN, and then everything keeps itself updated and satisfying dependencies etc, so it makes things a breeze to set up.

It wasn't you, but it's worth trying Linux every few years just to see how things have improved. I used to have the same tweaking issues on Linux up until around the 2011 versions of Ubuntu. Then likewise I've not really had any issues with Mint (which I switched to when Ubuntu started pushing Unity, which wasn't even properly "tweakable" when it first came out, and maybe still isn't).

Right now I'm pretty happy with Windows 7 for things "just working" and since I've got back into PC gaming. Hopefully the whole Steam for Linux thing will start to get Linux recognised as a viable gaming platform. I know a lot of geeks are quite happy that it isn't used for gaming, but I like having choices. If Windows 8 and other future versions try to force tablet style interfaces then I won't be wanting to use them. I love tablet interfaces on tablets, but not on my desktop.

What do you mean about the "package manager" being "shit hot"? I tried using an MBP as my web development machine for a while, but ended up switching to Ubuntu because it was much easier to get an up to date Apache/Perl environment set up using Aptitude. Not to mention that all the media players available on OSX back then were awful. I use Spotify now though so that problem has taken care of itself.. but I'm quite happily using Windows 7 at work right now, with Mint in a VM when I need it.

I hate having to store the media, and especially to go through a set of discs when setting up a new machine. On Steam you just click the games you want to install and away it goes. It's far superior to the crap we had to go through in the "olden days" IMO. If you have a slow net connection you can also backup and import from your old computer. That's still a little annoying, but it does mean only one transfer rather than again going through all your disks.

When the developers add extra layers of DRM on top of Steam it pisses me off too. I don't see the point in it..

Pinch to zoom is pretty easily handled by the mouse wheel, or say click both the left and right mouse button and drag. You could also do 3 finger touch if you include the middle button. Things that wouldn't work with a mouse would be rotations for example. Those could be handled by buttons on the keyboard, or I guess mouse gestures or other button combinations (left and middle to rotate left for example).

This isn't delaying advancement, it's recognising reality.

It won't increase the cost of current technology. Gigabit is already pretty damn cheap. It might slow the advancement of terabit capable tech, it might not.

Note that I'm not saying that we shouldn't keep developing faster tech, but I was saying that currently there is no need for it at intranet level.

HD video chat? If you even want video chat in the first place, I don't see the benefit of HD. Movies sure, video chat.. not so much. I've been setting up everyone here with webcams, but most of our employees much prefer to pick up a phone than engage in a video chat. Admittedly they're engineers and therefore more likely to be introverted than the average worker.

Bandwidth is an issue in parallel processing, but I don't think it's as big a deal as the latency that you introduce when punting stuff out from local cache to the network. It's like having to use a paging file rather than being able to fit everything into RAM. It helps to have a faster drive, but it's still better to keep data as local as possible.

Fast boot is nice, but 10 gigabit switches are already faster than SATA 3, so even with RAID you're not going to see much improvement by moving up to terabit networking speeds.

Basically I'm just agreeing that "need" was a silly word to use.
