Well duh, but why should everyone have to do that for every site they use? It's as bad as manually keeping track of your household items. And while I personally did consider writing a script for keeping track of FB friends before, what % of FB users do you think could actually do that? Do/.ers really have to whine about interface functionality being improved?
You know. I would know (I wouldn't even bother to read the email or save the attachment so it's kind of moot). The average user though? They're not so well clued up. If they've been as far as saving the file to their computer, I wouldn't have much faith in them not executing it.
That's like saying you can easily find that you've lost something by taking a full inventory of your house each week. If you don't suspect something has gone missing, why would you be checking/making the list?
Working with Objects seems particularly primitive to me. I believe someone else pointed out the lack of strong typing and inheritance, among other things.
How do you expect to do inheritance without objects??????
Sure would be nice if we had one language to rule them all
Sure would be nice if I could build this car engine with a hammer! Except, that's not how the real world works. It's nice to use tools appropriate for the job. Have you ever learned any programming languages? It doesn't sound like it.
I agree about the DOM though, and I wouldn't complain about having other scripting options besides JavaScript. HTML was designed to allow different scripting languages of course. If I ever have to do anything in JavaScript beyond basic UI stuff then I'll have a look at CoffeeScript..
Your body does store fat in fat cells - that's why they're called fat cells:p
Of course, your dietary fat doesn't just get magically put there without being converted to blood sugar first. I eat a low GI diet. Wholemeal carbs are fine. It's only refined carbs that you should avoid.
Different people are good at different things, even if they're working in the same industry. In the music industry, a sound engineer might not be able to actually play any instruments, but that doesn't mean he can't be great at recording, mixing down volume levels etc.
In the software industry, people build on others' work all the time. If the culture were completely do it yourself, everyone would have to write their own operating system and drivers just to run their application on top of.
That seems to be what the trollish summary is trying to get at though. Most software designers are excited about their software, whether it's open source or proprietary. The summary reads as if it's trying to say that open source is only popular among its creators, which is clearly not true.
I ran Ubuntu on my MBP for a while. Since EFI isn't that widely used on Linux, it makes for a fun time if you need to configure anything..
It just convinced me to buy a Dell for my next machine, since Dell were actually selling machines preloaded with Ubuntu, with good old BIOS, so I could be sure that the hardware was supported.
Myst was first person, but it was made up of still scenes (with a little animation sometimes), and it had no shooting.. it was pretty much nothing like an FPS. I remember other similar games on my Mac as a kid, one horror based one, one detective based one. They (and Myst) were basically just graphical versions of text adventure games. All in all, I prefer the text based ones over pre-rendered stuff. Using your imagination is a lot more fun somehow (yes, I also prefer MUDs to stuff like WoW).
It involved shooting portals, what's the problem? Games like Amnesia are first person adventure/puzzle games, but Portal was a shooter/adventure/puzzle game:p
I think the parachute bit is a bad idea. Just freefall straight into the volcano, or you'd end up cooking uncomfortably before you actually died.. actually, the heat from the volcano would probably also make it pretty difficult to get the 'chute down into the lava..
Perhaps you missed the "long, slow, climb" part. That's bad enough even when you're not sure you're going to die. By the time you hit the top you'd be wishing you had a gun. Maybe they'll put guns under the seats.
I don't think you really need to modify the kernel too much to port it, but you do need to have appropriate drivers. It's getting drivers for all the different hardware that is the hard part. Though in a roundabout way I think you're right since drivers that work for Android may work with other Linux distros.
Wrt your sig.. you know there are the same options in earlier versions of Windows, right? That does look slightly more convenient, but right after I tick those boxes I'd be disabling the fucking massive toolbar.
If the body runs rough, the brain runs rough too. Sure, you might be happy anyway, but you'd feel even better with regular exercise.
That doesn't have to be something boring - there are plenty of sports out there that geeks enjoy. I know not all geeks are the same, but there is a lot of enjoyment to be had from doing something for real. There is also a lot of enjoyment to be had from books, games and movies. I enjoy the latter more if I've been doing the former too.
I paid for that stuff before simply as a thankyou for making the game free to play.. slightly perverse yes, but true.
All of what you said makes sense, apart from I think you vastly overestimated what a support worker will get paid.. try more like 10 euros an hour :p

Not CHILDREN?! My gods, that makes your argument 1 bazillion times more powerful!
Having a job and eating is just a waste of your time dude. Accept the truth.

I don't think that's very rare to be honest..

I really hope this parents divorcing analogy doesn't catch on. All those poor imaginary children.. it's so sad.

Did you even read the post you're replying to?

You have to have a registered Slashdot account.

If Unix wasn't (originally) open source, then how did Berkeley get access to it? You can open up your source while still retaining copyright.

Or you could try a standing desk or something. I consider that sometimes..
