  1. Parents do the homework anyway on Schools Banning Homework? · · Score: 1

Everyone knows in elementary school (at least for the first couple years) your parents do your homework for you.

  2. Rayman: Raving Rabids on Slashdot's Games of the Year · · Score: 1
Rayman: Raving Rabids takes advantage of the controller better than any other Wii game out right now. I recommend picking it up, I was definitely glad I got it. The game fills me with a bit of nostalgia because it had some of that personable humor that is missing in most games these days.

Definitely a game to pickup for any Wii owner.

  3. Apple is closest to perfect on iPod Has Nothing To Fear From Slow-Starting Zune · · Score: 1
Let's be honest, currently Apple is the closest to having the perfect portable audio player of any one. The main area of its success is it's ease of use. Besides the very intuitive interface, the iPod+iTunes combo has yet to be beaten. The iTunes store has pretty decent prices and has a pretty wide variety of songs (with Beatles coming, hooray!). Though I've never used the iTunes store to much of an extent, as I like getting the cd's myself and ripping them to whatever format I please (currently my library is in FLAC, with my iPod Mini + Rockbox using Ogg).

I'll give the Zune credit, the player's actual on-screen interface is very pretty looking, but I was pretty displeased by the button navigation (read: the wannabe scroll-wheel). Also WMP is nowhere near as slick as iTunes is, though WMP11 seems to be heading in the right direction. Also the whole wireless sharing system seemed neat at first, but just seems like a dumb gimmick with the DRM.

My other gripe with pretty much all current portable audio players is lack of freedom with your music. Most players only support a handful of formats, where preferably they could play all available formats. Also I'd like to see an online music store that offers music in a lossless or high quality format or even a variety of different formats. This is all aside from the obvious DRM issues encountered with the music industry the way it is today.

So there's my critique of sorts of the state of portable audio players and online music stores.

  4. Elementary School Memories on School Bans 'Tag' · · Score: 1

Oh man, this reminds me of when I was in elementary school. Yoyo's got banned because kids were hitting each other with them. Then the pokemon card craze hit and those were banned because the older kids were ripping off the younger ones (buying a holo charizard for $1 or something like that). Then in high school we had some super-safety PE teachers, so we never played dodgeball (which happened to be on of my favorite games) or any other sport like it. It's way to easy to over stupid things in America. Let the kids have fun! I had stitches 3 time when I was younger (mostly from doing stupid kid things) and I don't wish I would have been "safer". Stitches build character!

  6. C2D Motherboards are way too expensive on Core 2 Reviews All Around the Web · · Score: 4, Interesting
The prices for Core 2 Duo compatible motherboards are just plain atrocious. I'm not paying $260 for a high-end Intel based motherboard. It does not have SLI support and thus in my eyes does not justify the hefty price tag. For this reason I may choose to go AM2. I am only a college student and my upgrade money comes from what extra money I have left over from my summer job and my birthday. I'm looking for a cost-effective solution, and although the Core 2 Duo prices themselves look good, the motherboard prices are just plain ugly.

So chances are I will pick up either a nForce 590 SLI or 570 SLI based motherboard. Currently I am looking at the Abit Fatal1ty AN9 or the MSI K9N SLI. I'm leaning toward the Abit as it is a 590 board but is still reasonably priced at $180 (at eWiz).

Anyhow, just my 2 cents on the high prices of C2D mobos.

I'm definitely excited for the Wii and the possibility for innovation it brings. As excited as I am for the new games, I'm also looking forward to the tried and true franchises: Mario, Zelda, Metroid and Super Smash Bros. Also if a lightsaber game was made it would be most kickass. Definitely preordering a Wii.

  8. Next Generation was the shit! on Gaming Mags Worth Their Ink · · Score: 1
I started subscribing about 6 months before they stopped publishing the magazine. It was definitely one of my favorite gaming mags. The publishing company thought PSM would be a good replacement for the remaining 6 months of my subscription. Unfortunately the only console I had at the time was a Gamecube (which I still have and love). Needless to say I did not renew my subscription. I loved that cool material that the covers were made out of on Next Generation.

The only gaming mag i still read is PC Gamer. They still manage to stay very humorous and even beat out the internet on having the first previews for some games.

I also read Maximum PC, but I don't count that as a gaming magazine. It's still fun to read, although most of the previews I've seen on the internet by the time the magazine arrives. They have some cool how-to's once in a while still.

  13. Digital Distribution and Indie Games on Why There Are No Hit Indie Games · · Score: 1

I think soon we are going to start seeing better indie games, due to the maturation of digital distribution. From what I've heard one of the biggest hurdles to getting your game out there, is finding a publisher willing to publish your product. I'm seeing digital distribution programs like Steam being the future of indie games (and maybe games in general). Darwinia was an indie game, and it got very good reviews. I'm not really sure how successful it has been financially, but I know it got pretty good reviews all around. Just my two cents on the matter. My overall outlook is that now more than ever indie games have the chance to flourish.

That's not exactly what I meant. It just frustrates me that there is a good amount of slashdot users that absolutely hate microsoft and condemn all of their products. This isn't the correct thing to do. I myself am primarily a windows user, but I have dabbled in linux as well. Neither side has perfect products. I do agree that Linux is a good catalyst, but it is no replacement for windows in its current form. My biggest complaint is that it is way to hard to use for the average computer user. I consider myself a power user, and I still have struggles with getting some things to work right in linux. Linux often has the opposite problem where a user has the opportunity to customize many things and control them to their liking but, its just too damn hard sometimes. So basically I guess my point is that no OS is perfect at the current time, or really anywhere near perfect. My point was just that far too many slashdot readers like to condemn microsoft, when perhaps it is not appropriate.

  16. Re:Yes on Price Comparison Shopping in MMORPG · · Score: 2, Insightful

What you're describing can get really out of hand. You can get really unbalanced players, who buy all of their equip off of ebay and the like. SOE even opened a market system for trading in-game items for money. That's when I quit EQ2. I think this kind of thing is degrading to the gameplay and fun. It pisses me off to thing I earned all of my armor, which really isn't all that good anyway, and then I see some lvl 2 with a horse, which I can't even come close to affording in game, and it pisses me off. If you ask me its more enjoyable/satisfying to earn good equip in-game rather than to just be lazy and buy it off of ebay. You have to realize when you're playing an MMO, you're going to have to invest a good amount of time into it to have a half-way decent character.

This is fairly interesting, as the games industry is in a similar situation. Innovation is stagnant because publishers are afraid to try publishing anything new, only established brands. Tools like Steam, which bypass the standard publishing model, could help smaller developers and more innovative games take off. I think you're right, if artists released their music directly to the iTunes Store or similar outlets, they could stand to make a lot more money.

C is going to occur a lot, as Nintendo's first party games are the big ones that are going to take advantage of the controller. Most of the exclusive games are the good ones anyway, the multiconsole ones are usually divided by the lowest common denominator, and aren't half as good as exclusive titles anyway. I've been suprised by the number of third parties that have been supportive of the new controller design. I thought a lot of them would be opposed, but I know EA, Square and THQ (Some more I can't remember as well) said they were interested in the controller.
