For the entire time I've used Windows, I have had no need to install weird things off the internet. I just go to cnet's "software repositories", and I can download thousands and thousands of pieces of software that have been tested just for my operating system. In many other cases, I can go directly to the vendor's website and download yet more known-safe programs. No malware, no viruses, no attention seeking software that wants to embed a brand in my brain, no nagging to buy additional products, nothing.

It's actually fairly common practice in LEED-certified buildings to use concrete walls as thermal stores, where the sheer mass of the concrete makes it effective at storing heat to be radiated back out later.

On the other hand, deciding to apply based on the school's sports teams' records is kind of disturbing.

Actually, it isn't. Nothing in the world, with the possible exception of New Year's at Times Square, compares to the atmosphere on gameday at a school with a decent team in a major sport. It so permeates the campus that it HAS to be recognized as a major factor for everyone considering applying.

There is an easier solution, make attendance part of your grade... Have attendance sheets at the entrances/exits of the room. Keep them out for about 10 minutes into the class and then collect them. It doesn't need to be a big part of the grade, maybe 5%.

Make attendance 5% and I won't show up. Half a letter grade is meaningless to me compared to the time better doing something else, especially if I know I can do the work without the lecture notes. Make it 25% and I can let the work slide some to show up for easy points. 10-15%, I might show up, depending on how well I can do the work. Even one letter grade isn't that big a deal; people care about grades for scholarships, not resumes.

Yep. The people we elect to government make choices based on what their constituents want (I'm ignoring corporate lobbyists here since it's not an issue with PATRIOT). That's representative democracy. We don't, and never have, elected people to do what's good for the country. We elect them to do what we want. Nobody's ever said that what we want is good for the country.

Every kick and punt requires a football fresh out of the box (I believe these footballs are manufactured differently, as well, and can only be used for kicks/punts, not normal plays). That's kickoffs, field goals, and extra points. Figure 15-20 balls required just for that, every game, minimum (it can be much more in a defensive battle). I'm not sure if there are any other times fresh balls are required, though.

The exceptions are the ones with sound, but those get shut off with game sounds when listening to mp3s.
