Is somebody in Kansas City seriously going to consider a drive to Atlanta or Cleveland, or will they just stay home for Thanksgiving and decide that 15 minutes on Skype will have to be good enough?
I'm driving from Kansas City to Orlando in 2 days to visit family. My wife left a week earlier, making essentially the same trip by train.
So yes, there are definitely some of us who will opt for this approach.
What if glibc contains a security hole? What's the faster, more reliable option: rebooting or manually restarting ALL processes?
Depends upon whether the goal is minimal admin time (just reboot and be done with it), or minimal interruption of client-visible services. In the latter case, "lsof +L1" makes it embarrassing easy to identify the relevant processes.
Likewise, my big wish is that they would delist any search results that point to eBay listings (which are usually way past their expiration date and no longer in eBay's database). If I want to look for something on eBay, I'll go to ebay.com and use their search feature.
You can do this by adding "-site:ebay.com" to your search query.

Apparently I spoke too soon... it seems that my problems with
SpellBound were actually caused by a conflict with All-in-One Gestures. I've disabled the latter for now, and will report the issue upstream.

The only reason I stick with the Google Toolbar is for the spell-check feature. I'd happily go with Googlebar Lite if I could fine a useable standalone spell-checker extension. Unfortunately, neither AspellFox nor SpellBound eem to pass the "does it actually work" test.:(
I wish there was some centralised project that maintains a list of sites/paths to block, and Gecko browsers automatically download the list regularly. Hosts files can get big quickly. This project could also block phishing sites.
After some consultation on IRC, I learned that Ubuntu has no root account by default
Not quite. Ubuntu doesn't set a root password by default, which leaves the account locked (to interactive logins), but it's still very much present. The traditional behaviour can be restored simply by running the passwd command via sudo.
Any statistics of Firefox usage based on http log analysis will have to be adjusted upwards by some unknown factor based on how many people surf as MSIE using the User Agent Switcher Extension.
Some of us do the opposite as well. I'm a Firefox user, but occasionally mangle the user agent just to screw with weblogs. For example, lately I've been having the browser identify itself as Mothra.
Mothra/8.2 (inflatable; MS-Aiiieee!!! 12.3 SP27; User Agents can be spoofed?)
While I agree that security issues must be taken seriously, I feel the need to point out that Brad isn't exactly a paragon of virtue himself. In the past he's threatened to withhold information on vulnerabilities in competing projects, in order to make his own project more attractive... a bit of googling will turn up other examples.
Personally, I switched from grsecurity to SELinux shortly after the incident linked above. While Brad may in fact be quite skilled, I've simply lost trust in him and, by extension, his project.
This amused me more than it probably should have, but I'm having a hard time spotting the Chobits connection here...
Sure, as long as they include pictures! :P
Seconded. Gates Extra Hot barbeque sauce is good stuff.

Please take note, nobody actually cares!
Not to mention that it's now moot. :)
Now if they could put it in the form of a suppository...

Too bad we can't edit posts...
Due to budget cuts, we're forced to replace the dilithium with Folgers crystals!

And it was very well done too, IMO. He definitely spent quite a bit of time with it.
Perhaps you missed the part where the application was denied by the patent office. It only went to court as an attempt to overturn this decision.

Yes, I'm easily amused. ;-)
(sorry... couldn't resist. ;-)

On the plus side, this finally provided a chance to stress-test Jesse's deleet bookmarklet. It did a pretty good job (albeit not perfect).
