We just went through a little hiring process looking for a new bench monkey. We had a couple applicants that were about to/had just graduated from a local 2 year IT school, but we also had people who just did IT as a hobby. The applicants that did IT type work as a hobby could answer more of our questions than the IT school grads. To seal the deal, the IT grads were expecting 50k right out of school, but were less apt. I'll take someone with a passion over a person with a sense of entitlement any day.
HTTPS has been an option with Facebook for a while, but Facebook chat (still) doesn't work while viewing over HTTPS. And the wife needs Facebook chat...
The P vs. NP complete problem was introduced in a mandatory class at Virginia Tech (studying for Computer Science). Math is a big part of a CompSci degree now-a-day.
IE9 will only be available for Vista and 7, and it will be another 10 years before it runs under Wine. In my mind, the fact that a web browser is so tied into the operating system that it runs on makes me think less of the browser. It seems more like an extension of the operating system more than a program that runs on it (which it was in yesteryear.) It seems that all browsers made by MS will add/alter system files to allow their browser to run. I'd be highly surprised if IE9 installed solely in x:/Program Files/ and x:/Users/.
Request from Microsoft: When I upgrade to IE9, which I will, please don't ask me questions during the install. It made installing IE8 a pain.
ESX/ESXi will run the VMs faster than the other solutions, but then that computer can't be used as a workstation (and no 3d acceleration to speak of.) He has to connect to the VMs from another computer using the VI client (windows only) or over some remote protocol (RDP, VNC, ect..)
If you want to continue using the computer as a workstaion, you need to use a solution such as VMWare Workstation, VMWare Server, or VirtualBox. VMWare Workstation 7 isn't free, but it has pretty decent 3d acceleration in Windows. It takes a little bit of tinkering to get it enabled properly though.
From all of the numbers I've seen, VMWare Workstation comes out on top in just about every performance metric.
This reminded me of a piece of software called evercookie, it uses like 10 different ways to keep cookies persistent in a user session, HTML5 items being one of them. I would post the link, but it seems that Slashdot doesn't support copy and paste in Chrome 6.
Be careful what powers you give to anyone with power already, they're hard to take away once they're given, especially in the monopoly like environment we're in. It's easy to see how this could lead to cutting your service for other reasons that are "bad" for their network.
Does anyone else see how this sounds like that story of boiling the frog alive by slowly turning the heat up?
On my system, the WebP images take seconds to render, where the jpegs are near instant. This delay is even more noticeable on the last image of the tug boat. I know the memory/cpu trade-off laws, but is this trade-off worth it now? Will this format have to wait until people have better CPUs? They said they put the WebP images in a PNG container, is that affecting rendering speed?
(I have some random Intel Duo, Chrome, Win7, on a FiOS line.)
If a company is a person, and you buy shares of said company, does that constitute slavery? Isn't slavery, at least in part, defined as owning a person?
I think preventing it 100% isn't possible. The only way to come close will be accomplished by some technical measure. Some mechanism to measure rate of speed or the like. Obligatory: More excuse for big brother to GPS enable all phones.
Hell may have frozen over. A JS engine that rivals the best, support for most of the CSS3 goodies, and budding hardware acceleration. This is looking like the best IE release in a while.
If they can keep security snafus down, alternative browsers are going to be a harder sell.
This phenomenon is noteworthy because this produces light without wasting energy because it does not generate any heat.
Of course it generates heat. It's a freaking irreversible chemical reaction happening at room temperature.
In most cases, that's true. But it doesn't necessarily have to be true. If the increase in entropy is large enough, Gibb's free energy can still be negative at room temperature and therefore the reaction could happen spontaneously without generating heat.
I was just reading a translated version of Slashdot Japan. I had to look at the URL bar to see if I was still there.
It's for the XBox and PS3 only. I game on the PC. I would buy this on opening day, but I don't have either. The war on PC games continues.

whelp doesn't work on my chrome or ie on win 7 64 ultimate. typical .gov.
I have same config, works fine.
Am I the only one that laughed when I saw that Microsoft did the same to Google that Google did to Microsoft? It's like the 5th grade school yard.

I thought he was being sarcastic until the last paragraph.
The rules can be bent, and some, broken...
I thought your run-o-the-mill copyright violation was a civil matter. Shouldn't they be reporting the students to the copyright holders?

The founder isn't a citizen of the US. I don't think he can commit treason against the US.
Treason: A crime that undermines the offenders government.
Espionage: The systematic use of spies to get military or political secrets.
I'm wondering why software that uses the methods described in the article is off topic?

It was popular in the 90's, first site I recognized in Google image search

...but very rarely have I heard any arguments against his message.
Have you watched John Stewart lately?
