  1. background fade-in ... on Mozilla Exec Urges Switch From Google To Bing · · Score: 1

Some days/weeks ago they implemented a totally white background that fades-in when you move the mouse ... I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone really comment on that yet.

What freaks me out about this is that I no longer see if I'm "signed-in" on Google or not (because I use gmail). I really, really don't like having my searches directly associated with my gmail account (having a signed-in account for searches bound to your mail account is the most evil/brilliant idea in decades! I don't understand how people can side with Google on this one!)

Even if I don't check "stay signed-in" when using Gmail I'm still signed-in in Google when I open it with a different browser in Firefox. I guess if I close all my browsers and then go back it will work (cannot test because I'm currently writing this). Is there a setting to stop this madness? I never verify that I have no gmail account opened somewhere in the background ...

Even though they can probably make all the associations with my real identity and my searches without displaying explicitly that I'm logged-in... it's kindof scary. Like when the ATM machines greet you by name once you enter your card ...

Give the slide author a break. He was probably one of those kids who were forbidden **by LAW** to be taught English in school before the 4th Grade.

That's bill 101 and the separatist PQ for you.

Please mod the above down, the first part is entirely false, the rest is simply xenophobic or whatever you wanna call it.

Yes, there is a law that incites non-english immigrant people to choose a french primary school since Quebec primary language is french.

Nobody prevents anyone to learn english, and there are of course english courses in primary school.

time + money + possibility of judicial error + personal attacks on image etc. > satisfaction/reward (usually)

I mean ... it must absolutely be a prank! The project's website looks like a bad infomercial - the guy's application is like a student project (write a simple web-compliant server that runs CGI scripts) gone totally wild.

If you need time-critical efficiency in your web app, I suggest you make your front-end in a high-level framework to do the pretty printing and then delegate the CPU-intensive requests to some back-end server written in highly-optimized C.

The truth is web-servers are usually mostly CPU-idling, the real clog is in the I/O. There's no "vertical scaling" goal to reach here by making the code more efficient. You need to buy monster hardware.

Could MS be liable in a class action lawsuit if it explicitly offered or otherwise encouraged this practice? This story could have teeth.

What makes you think that MS encourages a practice that makes prices LESS appealing using its search engine?

I'm more inclined to believe the official statement that it was a mistake (i.e. item went on sale at some point but got updated wrong in the Bing index).

Maybe the shop was truly giving an higher price but that's a totally absurd practice. I would have understood if they had given a price that with the 2% cashback was the same than without (the price appears the same to the costumer and the shop cashes more in), but 50 bucks more?! Also, change a price under 699$ to go above the psychological 700$ level?
