Young whippersnappers. When I was "at a young age," it was called stone, and it didn't have any of the fruity ease of use features that other mediums like clay tablets and papyrus have. We had to learn to be precise and exact, because once we typed something there was no way to "navigate" or fix mistakes. I was fine with the drawbacks, because I always knew wherever I was there would be stone, which is not true with clay, papyrus, pulp paper, or systems of tubes.

WHOA!!!!! Slow down there, cowboy. Before convincing nVidia to do anything too progressive we should probably encourage them to market only products that are not faulty by design and that might not die extremely prematurely. Open source drivers, yes, but for those to be of use they must work with chips that consistently function as they are purported to.

Seriously, if a burglar sees or hears a dog, he'll move on to other houses until he finds one without a dog. If you have secret plans and chests filled with treasure, and everyone in town knows about it, maybe you need something more sophisticated, but a canine deterrent system is more than effective for the average home. And an alarm system won't wag its tail or lick your face when you come home from work. Or, go whole-hog and get four dogs, and a monkey that can dial a phone.

Seriously, I am not a CNN fanboy, but they do a pretty good job of reporting (whether or not you think they are biased). The TV networks will be all over this election, so this is one event for which we probably won't have to look too hard to find every bit of information we desire, and more. Three of my four computers and my Palm Treo will basically be resting this time, and I think your electronic goodies will forgive you if you enjoy the suspense from the couch too.

The DX2-66 was the screamer, and I couldn't quite justify the price premium, even for all the added speed. I also helped the engineers I interned with set up a network in early 1994, and the server was a DX2-66 with something crazy like 32MB RAM. Kiddie porn is already illegal EVERYWHERE, and most people in every society frown on it. It still happens. Censoring the internet and inconveniencing the rest of us will not stop perverts from going about their sick business. After all, they didn't always have the evil web to assist them, yet I think child pron predates the WWW. Shall we put up checkpoints at every intersection next, to prevent the flow of contraband?

I'm a proponent of rehabilitation and I feel that sentencing here in the US is generally too harsh - the deterrence factor we count on isn't there if the certainty of being caught is not high. Pedophiles are particularly disturbing because their rate of recidivism is remarkably high. They know what they do is 100% wrong, they are typically very careful and secretive so as to avoid suspicion, and if they are caught they still don't stop. Censorship won't stop them, only incarceration for life will. This is a war like the overly-simplified "war on terror," in that it must be fought but can never be won. So I have a real problem with the 99.9% of the population who are generally law-abiding having to suffer. I won't go into more detailed criminology, but censoring or filtering the internet will not end anything, and will merely drive kiddie porn, gambling and hate speech back offline.

If the class is currently as unstructured as it appears, I would suggest talking to your students before selecting your tack. It sounds like your students' computer knowledge and skills are likely to be all over the board, so I would say use the first class session to familiarize yourself with what the know and what they would benefit from learning. Computer-oriented classes are all too often done with a one-size-fits-all approach (especially the lower/entry-level ones), so if it really is up to you, tailor the class to meet the needs of your students, be it basic email and safe web usage, elementary html, php and python, or simple network administration. In my experience in education, the more technical or arcane the subject matter, the less communicative the teacher. Look at this as one of those rare opportunities to really help individuals with their specific needs, and everyone might come out a winner, including you. Just be flexible and share only the appropriate knowledge, and presume that some topics will fly clear over the heads of many bright folks.
