  3. Something to think about... on The Internet Not for Old People · · Score: 1

While I think this is pretty bad practice for a company, think about this story. I have a friend that works at a call center selling phone, internet and cable packages to people. While working there the management strictly enforced that they push every possible upsale to everyone without prejudice. One day my friend was sitting down and one of the workers in the cubicle next to him was on the phone with an elderly woman. He kept telling her she needed HUGE phone contracts, hundreds of HD channels, etc... and she would reply "O.K. dear. You know what I need best." Finally the man cracked and told her that he was just being forced to upsell aggressively and she really didn't need thousands of dollars of service a month. For that he was fired. There are companies out there who make it a day to day business practice to rip off the elderly. While this company's 'over 70' rule rediculously blankets every sane and intelligent senior with the wackos, I do think something like this would protect the elderly. Assume one of the workers, who is getting heavy commission based pay, is pushing something to an intelligent elderly person. She tells him that she wants a certain model and the salesman aggressively pushes more expensive models. A definate portion of the elderly population would be scared and back into the sale. Only to have their children show up fuming at the management the next day with their new HD-TV set. A 'self-policed' policy, where employees decided if each customer was capable of buying, would NOT work because the entire purpouse of this policy is to protect the elderly against the employees, not the other way around. This policy is shocking at first, but once you think of where it protects the elderly clients and most importantly, the management in turn, it's not too bad.

  4. Unacceptable Bypass of the Law on The Story of the Pedophile-catching Hacker · · Score: 2, Insightful

The fact that the hacker was trying to catch pedophiles is the last concern when figuring out if this is lawful or not. First and foremost, he broke into people's computers and did unlawful things to illicit his information. On those grounds alone it should not be admissible in court. Imagine if you were a store owner and you arrive there one day and see that your place has been broken into and all your files have been gone through. Then you find out that it was just a rogue 'burglar' who breaks into businesses to see if they're legally filing their taxes correctly. The government sides with him and you're left with a hole in your store, thousands of dollars in damages and uncountable damages from the data he might have taken from you, etc... Is that fair or even close to legal? Sure there's lots of hatred towards pedophiles and it's VERY easy to step aside and cheer this because it's presumably dropping their numbers, but the bottom line is it's intirely immoral regardless of whether he's stopping pedophiles, rapists or tax evasion.

  5. iPods are the least of Linux's problems on Linux's iPod Generation Gap · · Score: 1, Interesting

Linux is aimed at a totally different audience than Windows. With that said, it seems like everyone talking about Linux lately wants it to Windows-ize itself and be easy to to figure out and learn like Windows. Sure I'd like to see Linux turn into an open source competition for Windows, but that's just not going to happen. Once it's easy to use it loses its effeciency for the gurus and most importantly it loses its appeal to the 90% of Linux users that use it because it's 'NOT Windows' and no other reason. People enjoy sitting around in an operating system they don't understand, and pretending they do, because it makes them feel superior to the 'peons' using Windows. With that aside, Linux needs - out of the box - support for mpegs, mp3s, avis, wmvs, etc... before it's even going to come close to defeating Windows. Why would I want to kill myself trying to attach my iPod to an operating system that can't even play an mpeg file without extensive research on forums and package installing that would break a noob down into tears.

Very intelligent comments about sex and violence. Your statement on sex and depression could not be more true. Our society is really negatively stigmatizing sex. I believe this negative outlook on sex is based on our society's past, where birth control did not exist and marriage and sex were designed to merge assets and provide children to help with work around the home. Now that there is a real understanding of birth control and sexually transmitted diseases, our culture is resisting the change of casual sex from a 'dirty' act to be ashamed of to being a wonderful act of 'entertainement.' This is really hitting hard on younger women who feel sexual urges and put themselves down for feeling them because only 'sluts' do 'that sort of thing.'

There is a difference between using the English language to its full potential and purposely using large words that don't fit the context just to look intelligent and fill in the gaps in an article. A large percentage of the words the writer is using are sacrificing the accuracy of a word that is smaller and replacing it with a vague meaning of a larger synonym just to look more 'intelligent.'

Being a real big fan of games, I don't believe that games themselves promote violence, but parents are really giving children the wrong image about right and wrong. Sex is a natural and amazing thing. When a movie with mild sex gets an R rating and a movie with death and violence gets a PG-13 rating that says something about the social acceptance of violence and sex in our society. Now in your situation, I guess you could constitute rape as violence and not sex so it's not really a paralell.

Every major company out there is rushing to get ahead of their competition in technology and look better to the consumer. These systems and their advertising are designed to make a company feel obsolete if they don't choose to upgrade. Personally, the problem is the ever widening gap between upper management and the technician that actually does all the work installing and fixing the terminals. The big-wigs in the corner office that OK'd upgrading the software didn't know that the old software was sufficient and believes that the new software will be superior. When a complaint shows up on their desk about the new system being insuffecient they don't want to risk their necks for their decision, so they feign ignorance. Wash, rinse, repeat...

  17. Horrible Product Design on Dell Launches Flash Music Player · · Score: 1

One of the major marketing insights by Apple is their understanding that people don't want a piece of hardware that looks and feels cheap or unstylish. All Apple iPods 'feel' smooth and strong in your hands, and their designs are avant garde and intelligent. Dell's 'Ditty' (dropping the fact that the name sounds like a two year old is doing their market research) is an ugly and unstylish hunk of technology. Look at these screenshots of the controls http://img.dell.com/images/global/products/dj/dj_l eft_ditty.jpg It looks like Dell found a surplus of 1980s tape players and decided to reuse the buttons. Not to mention their use of a potentiometer for the volume controls!? This looks like an mp3 player my Grandma would use and I'm doubting that she'd even buy it considering that without a seamless integration into iTunes or a similar program, most of the less computer-savy customers will be overwhelmed trying to manipulate Napster and get their songs uploaded.
