I'd start a war*. Then I'd focus on the stories of several crews of the different factions. Benefits:

    • It's not "us against some evil, drug addicted alien forces" - Character development on both sides
    • Officers /can/ die, not only redsirts
    • Spotlight on romulan spies behind enemy lines, a bunch of klingons on their wrecked ship seeking a way to get their warp drive running again etc, not only federation bussines
I think it could work and feel "new".
    * Yes, we had DS9, but I never liked it all that much for the pseudo-spirituality, the Defiants varying levels of power (really, first they have troubles fighting a dominion vessel, couple of episodes later they blow them up like space invaders) and so on.

The main thing missing from the Laptop market is Modularity. He addresses this slightly by showing a model that has a detachable keyboard. What is really needed are inter-operable components that can be mixed and matched to fit both budget and requirements.
This is clearly the next step, but Laptop creators aren't getting the hint that desktop creators learned a long time ago.

At least Intel did get it. Hopefully they can "enlight" some more vendors.
