  1. Tron Legacy on Tron: Legacy · · Score: 1

I really enjoyed the movie. I saw it in 3D with the Dbox seating. (the motorcycle and flying scenes were especially enjoyable) I really felt that Disney in some ways was embarrassed of the original, hence the lack of availability of it on DVD. If it were me I would have re-released the DVD a month or two before Legacy came out just to put it back into everyone's mind. After watching Legacy I wasn't so sure they were embarrassed. There were several references and the spirit of it felt very similar. I loved it and will be watching it again. (this time probably 3D/IMAX)

I'm absolutely shocked that this has the backing of judges and the like. The police, at least in certain areas, are absolutely corrupt and/or absolutely racist. There is no way for a person to defend themselves against them other than a camera. If anything it calms the police down because they know it could end up everywhere. All this is is a way for them to hide their improprieties.

This wasn't an apple fan site. They were profiting from corporate espionage. As it is, everything apple does is watched/imitated by companies like Microsoft and Dell. If say something like the iPhone was leaked a year earlier, someone could have beaten them to the market. The point is Apple has a right to not have its company secrets told to everyone. It is not your right to know that information. It will never be your right to know that information. It's just plain arrogance (and stupidity) to think that it is.

I think technology is more ingrained into Japanese culture than it is in ours. Of course we have our spots (California, Washington, and parts of the east coast) but all in all I think this country has adopted a K.I.S.S. mantra. For everything really. I think phones have stayed simple because the populace hasn't demanded anything different. They accept the phones that are available and the majority do not import them from other countries. Nearly every phone maker that does business all over the globe picks and chooses which models will be sold where. We're the richest country in the world. Wouldn't you think they'd sell us everything they had? The fact is they don't and I happen to believe its because of our culture. I love the iPhone. Its the best phone i've ever used. It's already causing some waves. A provider, i forget which, just added visual voicemail to their service. (VV has been around for quite a while in Europe i believe.) I hope that it pushes competitors to start giving us full featured phones (like what is available in Japan and Europe) and not these crappy Razrs.

  6. Fees on AT&T Gears Up for the iPhone · · Score: 1

I spoke with a AT&T rep yesterday and he said because they consider it a PDA type device, the fees would be consistent with that. $39.99 for unlimited data. (the 5, 10, and 15 meg plans arent a good idea with this phone) Couple that with a normal phone service of also $39.99 and you have about $80. Fees and such will push it closer to $90. The initial cost doesn't bother me as much as the monthly fee. I had considered getting one at launch but another $100 a month bill just doesn't sit well with me.

Which makes more sense to me. Superman wouldnt be quite as cool if he was lifting a truck in a suit and tie.

  12. Re:DRM on QTFairUse6 Updated Hours After iTunes7 Release · · Score: 1

I do not agree at all. The fact of the matter is independent artists now have a distributor that requires no exclusivity and does not sensor their music. They are free to sell it as is. As of right now you are not able to go to Walmart and buy every newly released album.(or movie for that matter) There are certain standards that the music must meet in order for them to even carry the album.

I dont dispute the fact that Apple created the DRM partially in order to be able to lock it with the iPod. It was an enforcer of their business model, like you said. However, they also realized that no one would buy an mp3 player that couldnt play music from someone other than themselves. So they added the ability to accept MP3s. You don't ever have to visit the iTunes store to use your iPod. This fact alone is should be enough to appease most. It's not, but it should be.

While it may just be a biproduct, DRM does make sure artists get paid because it does make mass distribution more of a chore. As i wrote before, it can/should definitely be improved upon. Transaction ID's are all well and good but again this doesnt prevent you from giving it to all of your friends.

The fact is Napster showed us that if people can steal music, they will. The only reason it closed was because the government started arresting its users. Do you honestly think that any music service would be successful today (including iTunes) if the government hadn't stepped in?

Jump on to any Gnutella client or music newsgroup, and look up any artist and guaranteed you will find some of their work. If it was downloaded 10 times, the artist got paid once. If it was downloaded 10000 times the artist got paid once. How is this fair? How can something that at the very least tries to stop people from doing this a completely bad thing? You are just looking at things in a black and white way.

For the final time DRM is not the total answer. However any future technology should include barriers to distribution. I absolutely believe that.

You said it right there. Where a better idea exists. I haven't heard of one yet.
If the file was found in the wild not only Apple would know but so would everyone else. It wouldnt take long for someone to get that person's private information. Apple would have another lawsuit on their hands.
Your method also doesn't do anything to actually prevent distribution of it. You could still give it to 50 of your closest friends. Which in some ways defeats the point of protecting it in the first place.

DRM isn't the answer in its current form, but it's still better than some of the half baked ideas out there.

"If one were to buy content from an online store (like iTunes), why would one want to put the content on a file-sharing network in the first place?"
Are you kidding? Napster didn't get popular because a 'minority' were sharing their unprotected music. Everyone and their mom had their entire libraries shared. While I think record labels are greedy and fairly unscrupulous they still have a right to have their product protected in some way. Leaving the music completely unprotected obviously didn't work and I seriously doubt the populace magically gained ethics in the last 5 years.
Watermarking the file is a good idea. However what if someone gets a hold of a file and cracks the watermark? What information would they have about that person?
In any case as the previous commenter mentioned the DRM can be removed by the burn-rip method which Apple in fact tells you.
Wait until the government discovers newsgroups...

  15. DRM on QTFairUse6 Updated Hours After iTunes7 Release · · Score: 1

To say the DRM has no legitimacy is just plain stupid. Reminds me of the similarly moronic 'All music should be free' line around in the Napster days. Apple was the first company to give us a decent model of legal music downloads. I'm happy that Apple instituted something that prevents(or at least slows down) music from appearing on P2P networks. People have a right to be paid for their work. I understand that people want to put their music on whatever they want and they should be able to. But technically iTunes isn't selling you that. You are allowed to authorize 5 computers, burn it 5 times (or something like that), and put it any iPod you want. They tell you that. None of that is hard to read fine print. If you don't like it don't buy it from them. DRM, or something like it, is a necessity in preventing the average person from being able to share their whole library with the world. Anyone here could get around it. Many outside of slashdot cyberwalls can't. At least not without effort or help. DRM isnt perfect and apple should improve it. But eliminating it completely just isnt the answer.

Microsoft, which technically has the capital to buy both companies several times over, has hinted for years they'd love to own Nintendo but it has never happened. And why you ask? Nintendo has millions in the bank, they make great games that already have a huge following, and most importantly they are a profitable company. 20. Re:Profit margins? Hang on on Apple - What A Difference Eight Years Can Make · · Score: 2, Interesting

Actually Apple isnt propped up by Microsoft. As someone mentioned Apple was given 150 million by microsoft almost ten years ago. Since then they have been running on their own two feet. In terms of actual numbers: 840 million (6% of 14 billion) vs 360 million (9% of 4 billion) The numbers say Dell is making a heck of a lot more money. The reality of it is Dell isn't going anywhere. They are going to make the same machines and roughly keep the same profit margin. They are trying to branch out a little but I don't think many see it helping much. The only way Dell is going to be in any sort of trouble is if a) Someone can sell a box that is cheaper and better AND have a brand that people recognize. Apple is obviously NOT trying to do that. The fact of the matter is Apple is growing their company. You can definitely see a shift in public perception from being a niche computer company to the company that makes iPods and sells music. I'm fairly certain this is by design. You are 5-10 times more likely to see an iPod commercial vs an iMac commercial. But the fact of the matter is Apple still makes most of their money off of computer hardware. (the margin is shrinking however) They know that if they want to get to that 840 million its not going to be on the strength of the iPod alone. I see a HUGE push of their machines coming once the Intel Macs role out. They are going to cost less to make and won't go through the supply/demand hell they were in with IBM. I actually think next year is going to be a huge year for Apple either in terms of taking a step forward or a step backward in being the next big computer maker.

The created a controller that the casual gamer can immediately pick up and use. And after plugging in the nunchuck, gives those of us who enjoy FPS's the first system that could rival a keyboard and mouse. Can you imagine playing spiderman in first person where the remote is used to pick where the web lands.? (or using two remotes for dual web action?) i would literally spend hours just swinging around..... a tennis game where you actually swing the controller and the racket swings the same way? you could literally execute slices, topspins, lobs, whatever, all by performing the appropriate movements with the controller. in the teaser video it showed an old couple conducting a symphony. imagine standing there and whichever section of the orchestra you pointed at would begin to play and even would play higher or lower as your arm movements dictated....well that kind of gay but still. thats pretty damn cool... No offense to microsoft, but i'd rather play halo 3 using this controller than using the 360 controller i saw in person at E3. i'm sold
