Hmm, XUL is sandboxed and isn't tied into the OS, ActiveX runs with user priv's and can easily(AND IS) be used to distribute viruses, spywayre, malware, $sys$sonyrootkit.
One I can think of standards(most of them) are well implemented, Firefox STILL and NEVER will use ActiveX so that is another, XUL mozilla's Javascript/XML based alternative to IE's ActiveX. I'd be willing to bet they will pull more stuff out of their hat and Microsoft will pull a crappy implementation of it out of their ass(crap? wow, that was good), in sense IE is chasing after Firefox now, what used to be the 'lead' weh browser is now the follower??? Anyways, I'm sure mozilla still has more planned for us:)
It had better have some bugs fixed from RC1, I had to remove Adblock(OK, maybe extension issue, but COMPATIBILITY comese to mind) to keep it from crashing after 3 minutes of use. I am a big backer to Firefox and loved trying the 1.5b(1/2) and so far RC1, what I would really like to see is starting to use a non-javascript language for client-side scripting, hmm LUA, PHP, Python and the likes come to mind. Anyways YEAH!!! Downloading it now:)
Not EXACTLY a *nix worm, but rather a PHP hole, the executable can only be run on a *nix platform however, so the PHP EXPLOIT goes for all platforms with PHP nad unpatched scripts, but the executable the worm uploads and executes is most likley a shell script or *nix executable, SO if the creator wanted he/she COULD have it check what OS the server is running and upload/exec a OS-specific binary.
This is why I hate you trolling cowards, we can't damage your karma, honestly because of you we should force you to register just to post a comment....
The Linux movement wil never be complete until the normal(how do I browse the web?, J/K, but you get it) people can use it without EVER needing the command line, the average user is uncomfortable and afraid of it, and everyone has grown up(well, most) using M$'s GUI control panel that makes everything 'so easy', hell most people even think of this when they think of Linux.
[Root@localhost ~]$
They think that Linux is STILL command line only, hell I just impressed the librarian at my school by booting up a LiveCD, asking her what OS she thought it was, and as soon as she said "Windows" I about burst a gut. Until sterotypes are removed, and Linux can be run by a novice it will not become mainstream.
That mouse shown in the link looks weird, not only would that be uncomfortable IMHO, I couldn't stand looking at that thing. And 'taking breaks' after extended periods of use, wouldn't that lessen the time I could play EverQuest? No WAY I'd give up my gaming time just to prevent RSI, I'd rather jump off a cliff. GERRONIMO!!!!
You pay for your right to use their content, than you pay the subscription to play on their servers, you don't think they can host servers for a MMORPG with over 10,000 players very cheap do you??? And whaaa, you have to pay for the CD, like I said this is buying your right to use the content that they spent time making.
They don't do that already? I thought they did ever since science has been around, especially when the church ruled the world, if it didn't follow the religion it was said to be false, still holds true a little nowadays, but now if the scientists or government disaggre it is said false, the church pretty much used to govern the world, so this is nothing new. Or am I mixed up here???
But also there is people(companies, school(s,districs), etc...) who download onto the network and install from there, or put it on the next ghost image, so I'd say there is still other things beside multi-copy downloads that affect the numbers... Anyways 100 million downloads period is still a amazing mark, and a lot of bandwith gone by too:P
Ehhh, 30FPS is usually enough for me, but that's because I'm not made of money to buy fancy GFX cards and PC components. But still, it's all about the FPS you can crank out of your card...now back to downloading CD 5 of OpenSuSE.
I agree with the whole prgramming bit, however distros such as Mandriva Linux(formerly Mandrake Linux) are including compilers and IDE's(not the kind that connects you hard drive to your MoBo, but I think you knew that) like KDevelop to install optionally via Download thru the package installer, or on the installation media; and SuSE 10 even includes mono for those addicted to the.NET framework, kinda handy to develop Windows apps on Linux in a.NET language like C# without needing QT and they still run on all platforms(though the project is still in development) but now I am getting Offtopic. But yes, I agree that the mainstream distros like Mandriva, Lycros, Linspie, etc.. need to meed the needs for developers. However the downside about Linux in general, each distro works differently, has different libraries, etc.. so this always complicates things. Maybe distros should continue to follow the path of making it easy for n00bs, but have a learning curve so that power users can still make use of it and hack around with it and shit. Offtopic: Anyone know how to change the icon for the K-menu in KDE???
Anyways, just IMHO
It's all about the FPS. The more frames DirectX and OpenGL can put out in a second, the smoother the picture renders. A standard NTSC T.V. signal is 29.7 FPS, while the average GFX card these days can pull off 6000(not that I have ever had such a high framerate, must be my 600MhZ celery CPU and PCI(not express) Xtasy branded ATI Radeon 9200 card)
Easy to install crap??? Not without command-line tools, otherwise depenicies are a pain in the ass, as I said, the 'average' user is afraid of the command line, not only because they can fsck something up, but it's a pain in the ass for them.
What distro you use depends on your abilities. I agree with everyone else that Slackware will teach you linux to the core(not quite as deep as LFS though)and will provide you with knowledge on how it works. The average user just wants a system that Just Works(TM), is easy to use, and can do everything they need to on it. I agree that installation isn't a big issue anymore these days, but for the casual user a prettied up wizzard install is probably for the best, they don't want to learn HOW it works, they want it to Just Work(TM). "To each his own" best part about Linux, there are distros for the more skilled users, and the n00bs, let the n00bs use SuSE, Mandriva, Lycros, Linspire, etc..; and the rest of us can use Slackware and the likes. The biggest player in the Windows to Linux movment will be "can I learn this easy, and use it easy" not "how much can I fsck with it". There will always be the skilled Linux hacker wanting a open distro to toy with, but there is more n00bs that haven't heard of linux, or have this stero-type
[n00b@myPC ~]$ - "WTF DO I DO NOW???"
many people actually think Linux is still like this, so the big player is a nice GUI to get them started, because a average user is scared of the command line because they might screw something up, the big problem with Windows; the tools are all GUI based and a user has little chance of fsking stuff unless some program does that for them. In Linux a quick rm* as root will wipe ur HD in no time flat, takes some skill to do that in Windows. But all of this is IMHO, reply.
I like PDA's, don't have one but I like them. Big problem is they have all this funcionality, but don't have decent storage for it. Also I'd rather have a PDA not locked to a OS, or had a F/OSS OS like linux on it so I can screw around with it if I wanted too, the whole it runs with what we put on it BS is for the birds. Not meant to provoke flamewars, just IMHO

This is slashdot....you think stories get posted in 10 minutes??? It probably WASN'T posted on mozilla's site when he submitted it.

Wow, thats effecient cooling for your CPU :P, but wouldn't dust collect easily on that???

Pretty much.
Microsoft = Proprietary Apple = Proprietary Indirectly, Microsoft = Apple, they share the same common goal even, MONEY $$$$.

You "exchanged" your soul(or a copy of it because you already sold(souled) it to M$ and the people who have patents on genes)
